Let us introduce origami balloon designs presented in this book. First, it will be important to saythat all of them are based on an original balloon design created in far 1998 by Yuri Shumakov, oneof Oriland creators. The very first Oriland Hot Air Balloon was displayed at the same year of 1998on Oriland creators exhibition Miracles from Paper, flying over Oriville Castle of the very firstOriland Kingdom. Also this balloon made its appearance in first virtual Oriland galleries on theInternet, including the award-winning site Travel to Oriland (1999) where an image of this origamiballoon was flying across the screen, surprising all the visitors with miracles of Internet technologyof that time as well as miracles of origami!

    Origami Balloons Intro

The shapes of balloon envelopes rendered in theseorigami designs can be divided on the traditional "invertedtear drop" shape (from the elongate conical to tubbyconical versions) and the round shape.

Elongate Conical Shape(16-section Hot Air Balloon)

Tubby Conical Shape(21-section Hot Air Balloon)

    Round Shape (24-sectionMontgolfier Balloon)

All the origami balloon designs in thisbook have a similar structure: eachconsists of a Balloon Envelope and aBasket. The bottom part of the envelopeis referred to as the skirt. The balloonenvelope has a Top Lock and a BottomLock at the Envelope Skirt. Thecomponents of balloons are folded andconnected together without any glue, justusing paper locks.

There are two types of baskets presentedwith these origami balloons - SquareBasket, used for all the Hot Air Balloonversions and Round Basket, used for allthe Montgolfier Balloons.

The balloon envelopes presented in thisbook can be grouped by shapes, typesof locks, quantity of pieces of paper andquantity of sections.

    Skirt Lock(Bottom Lock)

There are different types of locks used in the presented designs of balloon envelopes, but theycan be divided on two main groups: Top Locks and Skirt Lock (Bottom Lock).

The Bottom Lock alsocalled here Skirt Lock isuniversal for al l theballoons presented in thisbook. So once youcomprehended its foldingin one model, it should beeasy to perform this lockfor other models.

Skirt Lock (Bottom Lock)on 24-section Montgolfier Balloon

Skirt Lock (Bottom Lock)on 15-section Hot Air Balloon

As for the top locks they differ incomplexity and the final visual result.Relatively simple in folding is the OutsideTop Lock shown in the article Hot AirBalloon (Outside Top Lock) in greatdetail. The lock creates a pretty circle onthe top of the balloon envelope, which islooking especially nice when two-colourpaper is used for this balloon. We dorecommend starting your balloon foldingadventure from this design.18-section Hot Air Balloon

    (Outside Top Lock)

18-section Hot Air Balloon(Inside Top Lock)

The Inside Top Lock minutely shown inthe article Hot Air Balloon (Inside TopLock) is more complex in folding sincethe process of locking is taking placeinside the balloon. This is a rather robustlock that is completely hidden on thefinished design and provides a smallaperture and an appealing visual patternof balloon sections on the top. Itsadvisable to take strong paper becausethis inside top lock adds an extra stressto the upper edge of paper used for theballoon envelope; in case of weak ordried-up paper the edge may tear a bitduring the locking. You may reinforce theedge of paper as advised in a practicaltip given in the afore-mentioned article.

    Skirt-likeInside Top Lock

This type of the Inside Top Lockis based on the same principleas the Skirt Lock (Bottom Lock). It is used for the Montgolfierballoon designs and shown ingreat detail in the articleMontgolfier Balloon (8-ModuleEnvelope). To the moment whenyou learned various designs fromthis book, it will be no problemto comprehend this lock, but thefact that the lock is on the insideof the balloon adds complexity.

This Skirt-like Inside Top Lockcan be used for designs of HotAir Balloons presented in thisbook also, but be aware that theless sections in the balloon themore complex the lockingprocess will be. Although we dontshow this specific type of Skirt-like Inside Top Lock for Hot AirBalloons in the book, you maytry if you want, but its advisablethat you master the MontgolfierBalloon first.Skirt-like Inside Top Lock

    on 24-section Montgolfier Balloon(8-module Envelope)

Skirt-like Inside Top Lockon 15-section Hot Air Balloon

Considering the quantity of pieces of paper used, there are twomain types of balloon envelopes - multi-piece and one-piece. Wellshow the examples here grouping them in connection with thequantity of sections of balloon envelopes.

The Montgolfier Balloon designs with the multi-piece envelope inthis book, no matter how many modules in them, have the fixedquantity of sections 24 to maintain its round shape. There is aversion with 8-module envelope, where each module folded froma rectangle, 1:2 in proportion. And the other Montgolfier Balloonversion with the multi-piece envelope presented in the book has4 modules, each module folded from a square. The designs of Hot Air Balloon with the multi-piece balloon envelopepresented in the book have another story. These can be foldedfrom several balloon modules with the different number of sections. The quantity of balloon modules (each folded from a rectangle,1:2 in proportion) may vary from 5 to 8 to receive a desired balloonshape from an elegant 15-section balloon to a tubby 24-sectionballoon. The balloon modules may overlap by 1 or 2 sections. Inthe book, the balloon assembly is shown on an example of an 18-section balloon, folded from 6 balloon modules that overlap by 1section, but you can extrapolate the principle on any variationpresented here. Despite types of top locks - outside or inside, designs of Hot Air Balloons are using practically the same balloonmodule with just some minor difference in the final folding steps,so the following variations apply to both types of designs.

15-section Hot Air Balloon(Inside Top Lock)

16-section Hot Air Balloon(Inside Top Lock)

    Overlap by 1 section

The 15-section balloon is having the slim and elegantclassic shape. It works well for all types of the top lock outside top lock and inside top lock.

To incorporate more colours you may overlap modules by 2 sections. For instance, using8 modules will result in the 16-section balloon envelope. Although it works well for bothtypes of the top lock, its better to use with the inside top lock.

When you need a balloon envelope made of 4 modules, you may use for them rectangles thathave 1 extra section, which will be used for overlapping. So youll need 4 rectangles, 5:8 inproportion each. For instance, you may efficiently use any standard format of paper, Letter or A4,to yield a rectangle 5:8, as shown. To do that, first, mark a maximum rectangle 1:2 on Letter or A4 and fold it in 4 equal verticalsections. After that, project one extra section and then cut the resulted rectangle.

This variation works well for alltypes of the top lock outsidetop lock and inside top lock.

Also for a 4-module balloon envelope, you may use for each module a rectangle that has 2 extrasections, one of which will be used for overlapping. It will result in a 20-section balloon. Youll need4 rectangles, 6:8 in proportion each. For instance, you may efficiently use a standard paper ofLetter format to yield a rectangle 6:8, as shown. To do that, first, mark a maximum rectangle 1:2on Letter and fold it in 4 equal vertical sections. After that, project two extra sections and then cutthe resulted rectangle. This variation works well for both types of the top lock outside and inside.

In the both articles - Hot Air Balloon (Outside Top Lock) and Hot Air Balloon (Inside Top Lock)- the balloon assembly is shown on an example of an 18-section balloon, folded from 6 balloonmodules that overlap by 1 section. This is a very good balanced shape for the balloon, not slimalready, but not tubby yet.

Of course, you may incorporate more modules to get a tubby shape of the balloon. For instance, the 21-section balloon is looking quite cute. It works well for all types of the top lock, but its betterto use with the inside top lock, as the top aperture will remain small with this type of the top lock.

    23-section MontgolfierBalloon

The one-piece envelope of the MontgolfierBalloon folds from a rectangle, 1:3 inproportion, which results in 23-section balloon.

Of course, you may use a rectangle between theseproportions; say, adding a required number ofsections to a rectangle, 1:2 in proportion, to get aone-piece balloon of a desired shape.

Large-size origami paper and colour copy paper can be used formost of the multi-piece designs. For 1-piece envelope balloonsyou may use gift wrapping paper (not too thin), even holographicfoil paper that comes in rolls. Many fine Japanese papers can beused as well such as Chiyogami paper. Actually you mayexperiment with any paper that is sturdy, thin, with fine finish. Youeven can use craft paper or thicker art paper for a large scalemodel. You may use posters or maps to get quite a uniqueappearance of balloons. Also try our printable colour pattern for the Montgolfier Balloon(8-module Envelope), presented in this book.

The designs of Hot Air Balloon with the one-pieceballoon envelope presented in the book can befolded from a rectangle, 1:2 in proportion, to get a15-section balloon, as well as from a rectangle, 1:3in proportion, resulting in a 23-section balloon of atubby shape.

The balloon envelope folds from several balloonmodules, each folded from a rectangle, 1:2 inproportion. The square basket folds from a squarewith a side that is 3/4 of the short side of the rectangleused for the balloon module. The quantity of balloon modules may vary from 5 to8 to receive a desired balloon shape from an elegant15-section balloon to a tubby 24-section balloon. Theballoon modules may overlap by 1 or 2 sections.

The finished model will bemeasuring a bit more than 3/4of the tall side of the initialrectangle used for the balloonmodule, as pictured.

We will show here the 18-section balloon, as pictured, folded from 6 balloon modules that overlap by 1 section.

Hot Air Balloon (Outside Top Lock)This modular version of Hot Air Balloon consists of a modular balloon envelope with the outsidetop lock and a 1-piece square basket.

In case of standard copy paper either Letter or A4 format, use itsheight to maximum.

Letter format: use 11 x 5 1/2 inches rectangles for balloon modulesand a 4 1/8-inch square for a basket to receive the finished modelabout 8 3/4 inches high.

A4: use 30 x 15 cm rectangles for balloon modules and an 11.3-cmsquare for a basket to receive the finished model about 23 cm high.

Suggested paper: regular origamipaper, colour copy paper. Also youmay experiment with any paper that issturdy, thin, with fine finish. You evencan use craft paper or thicker art paperfor a large scale model.

Suggested sizes: In case of origami paper, usea 10-inch (25 cm) size to get the rectangles 10 x5 inches (25 x 12.5 cm) in size; respectively usea 3 3/4 -inch (9.4 cm) square for a basket. In thiscase the finished model will be about 7 1/2 inches(18.5 cm) high.

To hang such origami Hot Air Balloon you will need a piece of lineand a little rectangular piece of paper about 1:2 or 1:3 in proportion, which in length is a bit less than the balloon diameter.

Assembly of 18-section Balloon Envelope(from 6 Balloon Modules)

For this particular balloon we used regular origamipaper - the rectangles 10 x 5 inches (25 x 12.5cm) in size for balloon modules.

The colours scheme used is a classic rainbow.6 spectral colours work great for this design, namely: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, andviolet. So you will need one balloon module percolour.

Its also possible to use just 2 complementarycolours like red and green, blue and orange, yellow and violet. In this case your will need 3balloon modules of each colour.

So prepare the balloon modules and diligently follow the assemblyinstructions that shown in a great detail with step-by-step photo-diagrams and written comments.

This version of the balloon folds from a single piece paper. Use a rectangle 1:2 in proportion toget a 15-section balloon of a classic shape. Using a rectangle, 1:3 in proportion, will result in a23-section balloon of a tubby shape (see the end of this article for details).

The outside top lock and the bottom lock of theballoon envelope folded in the same techniqueas it was for multi-piece balloon shown before.

The design of the balloon envelope is having aballoon skirt on the bottom, which may look likea basket.

We will show here the 15-section balloon, as pictured, folded from a rectangle (a double square), 1:2 in proportionthat overlap by 1 section.

The finished model will be measuring a bit less than 3/4of the short side of the initial rectangle, as pictured.

Optionally, you may add a 1-piecesquare basket to this model, justlike it was in the multi-piece balloon. In this case, the square basket foldsfrom a square with a side that is 3/8of the short side of the rectangleused for the balloon.

Suggested paper: large-size origami paper, Chiyogamipaper, gift wrapping paper (not too thin). Also you mayexperiment with any paper that is sturdy, thin, with finefinish. You even can use craft paper or thicker art paper fora large scale model.

To hang such origami Hot Air Balloon you will need apiece of line and a little rectangular piece of paper about1:2 or 1:3 in proportion, which in length is a bit less thanthe balloon diameter.

In case of adding the basket, the whole balloon will be a bitmore than 3/4 of the shortside of the initial rectangle.

Suggested sizes: Use a large piece of paper. Forinstance, use a rectangle, 18 x 9 inches (46 x 23 cm) insize, to get the finished model about 6 inches (15 cm)high. Its exactly what was used for the orange balloonshown in this article.

The balloon shown on this page is folded from Chiyogamipaper. A rectangle, 22 x 11 inches (55 x 27.5 cm) in sizewas used for the balloon itself and a 4 1/8-inch (10 cm)square for the basket. The resulted model turned 9 inches(23 cm) high.

In case of standard copy paper either Letter orA4 format, use its height to maximum.

Letter format: use 11 x 5 1/2 inches rectanglesfor balloon modules and a 4 1/8-inch square fora basket to receive the finished model about 83/4 inches high.

A4: use 30 x 15 cm rectangles for balloonmodules and an 11.3-cm square for a basket toreceive the finished model about 23 cm high.

The balloon envelope folds from several balloonmodules, each folded from a rectangle, 1:2 inproportion. The balloon module for this balloon withthe inside top lock folds practically the same as forthe outside top lock version, but with a few extrafolds.

The quantity of balloon modules may vary from 5 to8 to receive a desired balloon shape from an elegant15-section balloon to a tubby 24-section balloon. The balloon modules may overlap by 1 or 2 sections.

We will show here the 18-section balloon, as pictured, folded from 6 balloon modules that overlap by onesection.

Suggested paper: regular origami paper, colourcopy paper. Also you may experiment with any paperthat is sturdy, thin, with fine finish. You even can usecraft paper or thicker art paper for a large scalemodel.

Suggested sizes: In case of origami paper, use a 10-inch (25 cm) size to get the rectangles 10x 5 inches (25 x 12.5 cm) in size; respectively use a 3 3/4 -inch (9.4 cm) square for a basket. Inthis case the finished model will be about 7 1/2 inches (18.5 cm) high.

To hang such origami Hot Air Balloon you willneed a piece of line and a little rectangular pieceof paper about 1:2 or 1:3 in proportion, which inlength is a bit less than the balloon diameter.

If using two-color paper, begin with colored side up in portrait position.Follow steps 1 to 23 of the Balloon Module diagrams shown in the article Hot AirBalloon (Outside Top Lock), article pages 2 to 4 (book pages 15 to 17).

This should be the result. Check outall the mountain and valley lines andthen carefully pleat the paperaccording these lines.

The finished model will be measuringa bit more than 3/4 of the tall side ofthe initial rectangle used for the balloonmodule, as pictured.

    Unfold the upperhorizontal flap.

The square basket folds from a square with a sidethat is 3/4 of the short side of the rectangle used forthe balloon module.

Here is the profile of theresulted pleated paper.

The form now is rather 3D,so the following foldingprocess is shown in a photo-diagram style.

This should be the result.Check out all the folds.

The other side. The balloon module for the insidetop lock version is ready!

Practical Tip!The inside top lock will provide an extra stress to the upperpaper edge of each balloon module and if using weak ordried-up paper, the edge may tear a bit during the locking. So in this case, you may reinforce the edge of each balloonmodule applying a strip of sticky tape on the upper horizontalsection on the outer side, as shown. The lock will be inside,so the horizontal section with the sticky tape will be hiddenand not seen on the outer side of the resulted balloon.

We will show the assembly of the 18-section balloon, as pictured, folded from 6 balloon modulesthat overlap by 1 section. For this particular balloon we used regular colour copy paper - therectangles 11 x 5.5 inches (28 x 14 cm) in size for balloon modules.

Assembly of 18-section Balloon Envelope,Inside Top Lock (from 6 Balloon Modules)

The assembly of the balloon with the inside top lock starts from locking the balloons top. The toplock will remain inside, so there will be no access to it once the balloon is ready. Hence its imperativethat you do the inside top lock of the balloon correctly following the instructions diligently. And after that the balloon will be locked at the bottom, using the same method as it was shownfor the bottom lock of the balloon with the outside top lock in the article Hot Air Balloon (OutsideTop Lock), article pages 11 to 21 (book pages 24 to 34).

The colours scheme used is a classic rainbow. 6 spectral colourswork great for this design, namely: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. So you will need one balloon module per colour.

Its also possible to use just 2 complementary colours like red andgreen, blue and orange, yellow and violet. In this case your willneed 3 balloon modules of each colour.

So prepare the balloon modules and diligentlyfollow the assembly instructions that shown nextin a great detail with step-by-step photo-diagramsand written comments.

You will need 6 paper clips (one per module) inthe process to temporarily keep the overlappingsections aligned before they are locked at thebottom of the balloon.

This should be the result. Now fold the fronttriangular flap down, thereby locking this middledouble section.

Take the first module. Note, the modules shouldbe positioned by the inner side toward you. Incase you are using two-colour paper, it shouldbe turned by the inside colour. The marked placeis shown enlarged in the following steps.

Locate the double section at the middle andcompress the side folds to it, bringing the paperinto the position shown in the next step.

This should be the result. The middle doublesection is well locked. This is the basic lock wewill be using to lock the balloons top.
