Sara, Sydney, Jamie, Kate

Characters: Nora Helmer (A Doll’s

House), Hamlet (Hamlet), Tim O’Brien

(On a Rainy River), Madame

Beaumont (Transients in Arcadia)

Scene 1.)

Tim = I called you all here today to

discuss the aspects of the Human

Condition. Each of us has developed

from the many life experiences we

have encountered. Shall we converse

about our individual journeys?

All = yes that sounds good

Tim = alright then, Nora would you

like to go first?

Nora = Sure Tim I’d love to. Hi, my

name is Nora. My journey has been

life changing. I went from being

involved in a child-like and

manipulative relationship, to

becoming a free, independent

woman. I learned the reality about

society and I realized that I am strong

enough to go through life on my own.

Tim = Thanks Nora, who next?

Hamlet = I’ll go next Tim

Tim = Ok Hamlet take it away.

Hamlet = Well I’m Hamlet, and my

journey started with realization that

my own uncle murdered my dear

father.

All = gasp!!!!!

Hamlet = Once I became aware of

this terrible act the only thing that

mattered to me was my revenge.

Once my dear love was taken from

me, I finally understood what true

love really meant. It wasn’t until

Claudius, took my dear mother’s life

that I gained the strength to take my

revenge.

Tim = Oh that must have been very

hard for you Hamlet.

Tim = Well Madame that just leaves

you and I.

Madame = Yes Tim I will go next.

Firstly my name is Madame

Beaumont and my journey started off

pretending to be something that I

wasn’t. A man made me realize that I

was important and I didn’t need to

change my appearance and pretend

to be someone I wasn’t. He showed

Page 2: Original play

me that being proud of who you are

is the key to life’s happiness.

Tim = Good for you Madame, it’s nice

to see that you have found

happiness.

Tim = Well I guess it’s my turn. My

name is Tim O’Brien. My journey

starts with me having to make a very

tough decision. I was drafted to the

army to fight in the Vietnam War

when I was 21 years old. I didn’t

believe in anything that the war

stood for and so I fled from my

obligation. I took refuge with a man

that lived along the Rainy River, and

he changed my life. He made me

realize that I could make any choice

but I had to live with the

consequences. I did make a choice, I

went to war. It went against

everything that I believed in, I was a

coward.

Nora = Well I think that we can all

agree that the struggles that we go

through define who we are as

individuals.

Madame = Yes Nora you are quite

right. Societal pressures also play a

part in the struggles that we have all

face.

Hamlet = Yes society seems to have

played a large role in each of our

stories.

Tim = I think that we can define the

human condition as positive and

negative aspect of existence as a

human being. Thank you all for

coming and sharing your stories with

us today.
