It’s here!

108 Flowers Book 1Ning Yeh publishes yet another step-by-step illustration of one hundred and eight different flowers to his already extensive instructional collection. Book 1 walks the reader through illus-trations of the first twenty-seven flowers in this collection.

He starts with an introduction of material and preparation. Each flower opens with the finished painting, its English name and Chinese name. Then step-by-step notes on color prepara-tion, brush use and composition detail with numbered diagrams illustrate the completion of the flower. Follow his notations and you will complete twenty-seven different subjects and thirty completed compositions from beginning to end.

108 Flowers: Book 1 by Ning YehBKNY01 $29.95Book 1 includes African Violet (the lesson Jashin used to introduce her husband to her family’s tradition of Chinese Brush painting), Amaryllis, Anemone Poppy, Apple Blos-som, Azalea, Bamboo, Banana, Begonia, Bell Flower, Bird of Paradise, Blackberry Lily, Bleeding Heart Peony, Blue Bonnet, Bougainvillea, Calla Lilly, Camellia, Canna, Carnation, Cattleya Orchid, Cherry Blossom, Chili Pepper, Chinese Magnolia, Christmas Cactus, Chrysanthemum, Clivia, Cockscomb and Coral.

Painting with Ning YehA Teacher’s Pictorial Biography: Ning YehNing Yeh was born in China into a family with generations of renowned artistic tradi-tion. His father, an army general, was re-nowned for horse painting. The Yeh family moved to Taiwan in 1949, and Ning Yeh’s art training started when he was seven.

In 1969, the U.S. State Department invited the young artist Ning Yeh to come to California for an exhibition tour. Ning Yeh accepted scholarships and subse-quently received his Ph.D. degree at Claremont Graduate School.

Dr. Yeh began teaching Brush Painting in 1972, developing one of the most extensive Chinese Brush Painting programs in the United States. He has been a recipient of the National Teaching Excellence Award, among many other teaching honors.

In 1978, Dr. Yeh published his first book, “The Art of Chinese Brush Painting.” In 1987, Dr. Yeh starred in Coastline Col-lege’s first instructional television series, “Chinese Brush Painting with Ning Yeh”. The series won the Emmy Award for Best Instructional Series and was aired nationally on The Learning Channel. He authored two additional books, “Chinese Brush Painting: An Instructional Guide” and an album entitled, “Eighty Paintings and Ideas.” 1991 saw the release of his fourth book, “A.B.C.s of Chinese Paint-ing.”

Ning also embarked on the ambitious project to produce an instructional TV series on his own. With the Emmy series, there are now six instructional series. His skill as an artist, filmmaker, and instructor continue to develop and manifest them-selves in his most well-received series ever.

In 1996, Weyerhaeuser, one of the largest forest products companies, approached Dr. Yeh to be the featured artist for an international ad campaign. Over the next decade, Dr. Yeh and his artwork have been featured prominently in national television commercials as well as ads in the Wall Street Journal, Time and News-week.

Dr. Yeh continues his work deepening and broadening his role as an artist, teacher, author, filmmaker, traveler and cultural ambassador. He lives and maintains his studio in Huntington Beach, CA. He is a loving husband to his wife and business partner of over 40 years, Ling Chi, and is a dedicated father to his two children Evan and Ja-Shin.

A True Painting Story

Jashin’s husband Keith’s first African Violet Master-piece

An Introduction by Jashin Yeh PanzaIn February I introduced my husband Keith to his first experience with Chinese brush painting. Visit our blog at brush-painting.com/blog for the full story.

I used the first lesson in my dad’s new book, “108 Flowers: Book 1”, the African Violet, to show the public what someone with no art background can produce by just following my dad’s step-by-step notes. The end results surprised us all and prompted the compliment from my dad to his son-in-law, “Keith is a genius!”

Well, my husband’s confidence is still not quite there yet ... but I told him that he’d feel much better when he learned to sign his name, seal it with an artist seal and wet-mount the painting to frame and hang in our house. Perhaps next to my very first poppy lesson!

Keith learns to write his new Chinese name given by his father-in-law Ning with a tracing guide that was made by his mother-in-law Ling Chi.

Signature CardOAS translates your name syllabically and by sound. We paint the charac-ters in a modified print style that represents the translation. Includes a short lesson on stroke sequence and the meaning of each character. The signa-ture calligraphy portion is done on a 5 x 7 rice paper and framed inside a paper folio for display. SIGN: $10* portfolio is 7” x 9” folded*Pricing includes a maximum of 3 characters. Each char-acter after that is an additional $3.00.

Artist Name SealHand carved by an artist in China on a soap-stone piece. Colors of stone vary based on the availability of the artist. Square and round shapes have a dragon carved on top. SL7NSQ-M: $55 approximately 3/4” Square (+/-)SL7NSQ-S: $55 approximately 1/2” Square (+/-)SLP3A: $5 Seal Ink 54gAvailable shapes and sizes are available online.

Chinese Name: Tracing GuideOAS has found the quickest way to learn to write is by tracing just like a child who learns to write the alpha-net in grade school. Now available is your Chinese name written with ink and brush in a modified cursive style. It’s written in three different sizes on a single sheet of Calligraphy Practice Grid (P03C), then lami-nated. SIGN4: $30* 15” x 10 ⅜” laminated sheet*Pricing includes a maximum of 3 characters. Each character after that is an additional $3.00.

Paper Fundamentals: An OAS Guide to PaperOAS’ best way to introduce the behaviors of the different types of rice paper. Through a simple lesson of the grass orchid flower, OAS uses this as a tool to show the different characteristics that are revealed when color, ink and water are introduced to “rice” paper while providing common charac-teristics and possible uses; thus allowing you the artist to experiment and develop your own tastes for the different kinds of papers. After testing each one, you will have your own guide to compare with papers that you will encounter throughout your journey into brush painting.

Paper Fundamentals: An OAS Guide to PaperLP001: $25 8 pages- 1 sheet ea of thirteen samples* (approximately 8.5”x11”)*These samples should not be used as an exact sampling of OAS paper types but only as an illustration to describe the different paper traits of commonly used paper in brush paint-ing and calligraphy. To sample the current inventory, samples are available for purchase.

For years OAS has empowered beginners and accomplished artists with three main brushes for all of their painting. Nothing out there can compare to these three: OAS Happy Dot, OAS Flow S and our Orchid Bamboo brush. For beginners, we recommend starting with the best, promising a rewarding first experience at the start of their journey versus buying cheap, crummy brushes from their local hobby shop, who likely know very little about the art form itself.

Use OAS Flow for shapes like plum blossom petals and branchwork.

Use Orchid Bamboo for lines like bamboo leavesUse Happy Dot for small lines like

grass leaves

The orchid flower was used in OAS’ own “Paper Fundamentals: An OAS Guide to Paper” (featured on page 3) as an instructional tool to discover the different characteristics of paper for painting. The new OAS Plum Blossom brush was used to paint this orchid flower on shuen paper and then mounted with a glue stick using OAS’ Paint Your Own Cards (POC) to make a handmade card.

Ning and Lingchi returned from their last Dream Journey to China tour this April with three new treasures. Hand-carried back, they brought limited quantities of three small brushes that perform lines with ease and versatility, and do shapes and strokes with points similar to that of our Orchid Bamboo and OAS Flow - but are just smaller! These three brushes have already made it into the hands of a few lucky customers and are already creating a name for themselves.

OAS introduces painting strokes of the new brushes: OAS Plum Blossom, Happy Tail and Dancing Grass

Figure artwork provided by artist Mary Cheng. She uses the Happy Tail for the lady’s delicate strokes of her face and hand, and her robe was done with Dancing Grass.

OAS Plum BlossomTraditionally made from a careful selection of wolf hairs, this petite brush offers similar versatility to our OAS Flow S. A softer feel enables the artist to create small, supple full strokes and like the OAS Flow, returns to its nice tip after each stroke.OAS Plum Blossom HSP01 $8 (3/4” x 3/16”)

Happy TailSimilar in size to OAS Plum Blossom, this delightful brush is traditionally made from the bristles of the wolf’s tail, offering more spring and the possibilty of super fine lines.Happy Tail HSP02 $10 (13/16” x 7/32”)

Dancing Grass Can grass dance? Its slender long body of combination bristles move the way grass strands dance in the wind. Absolutely perfect for long continu-ous line strokes such as messy vines, intertwined branches and tapered just right to accentuate thin light lines transi-tioning to heavy weighted ones. Try writing with this amazing tool! Dancing Grass CSP02 $15 (17/16” x 13/64”) LIMITED STOCK AVAILABLE.
