Dear Esteemed Guests,

ACSCD and its host city Lagos State are delighted to welcome you the 1st African Congress

on Sickle Cell Disease. We are excited to be welcoming you to this beautiful city and hope that

you are ready to make the most of what promises to be an impact driven and enlightening

three days of learning for us all.

The Congress represents a unique and ideal platform for the International sickle cell

community to meet, discuss, share, learn and connect in order to fi nd solutions to reduce the

impact of sickle cell on communities in Africa and around the world.

The theme for the Congress is ‘Overcoming Sickle Cell Disease - Power of the collective voice’

which is a true inspiration in the program layout, as the aim is to foster collaboration and rapid

learning into concrete actions for impact. Over the course of the three-day event, you will

experience extensive networking and meeting opportunities and we would encourage you to

make the most of these. There will be focus sessions to promote greater interactivity between

presenters and delegates, and a Patient Pavilion on the exhibit fl oor. The program promises to

be educative.

We are very confi dent that everyone who attending the African Congress on Sickle Cell

Disease will leave Lagos inspired and full of new thoughts and ideas to continue their own

eff orts in the fi ght against sickle cell disease. As this event brings together a unique group

of people who share much in common, we look forward to joining eff orts and accelerating

progress through your active participation.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to this occasion, marking the inaugural African Congress on Sickle Cell Disease (ACSCD)

The theme being; “Overcoming Sickle Cell Disease: Power of the Collective Voice” connotes a core message to all delegates as it is known that Sickle Cell is a neglected tropical disease that requires signifi cant attention in Africa, and especially in Nigeria.

The growing burden of sickle cell disease in Africa is undeniable. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the world’s most common genetic diseases, aff ecting an increasing number of people. It poses a signifi cant public health problem notably in sub-Sahara Africa, the Middle East, parts of India, the Caribbean, and Brazil. It is at this time, we come together as a collective to seek best practices and innovation to addressing the challenges of sickle cell disease and to further ensure we achieve successful outcomes for a healthier Africa.

As you deliberate on critical issues on sickle cell disease aff ecting Africa and the world, I hope that you will also enjoy our legendary hospitality.

Once again I welcome you to Nigeria, to ACSCD 2019 and wish you a very productive meeting.

H.E Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR. Ph.D. Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

The Grand Patron of ACSCD 2019.

Dear Delegates,

It is my honour and privilege to welcome you to the 1st African Congress on Sickle Cell Disease (ACSCD). This event is billed as one of the giant strides taken in recent times to better understand and address the devastating effects of Sickle Cell Disease in Africa.

The conference is expected to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, sharing of our experiences of best practices and informed recommendations on Sickle Cell management, control and policies.

We welcome you and your organization as you add your voice to the ACSCD theme titled ‘Overcoming Sickle Cell Disease: Power of the Collective Voice’ and be part of this event, as we chart a way forward together with world-renowned sickle cell and public health experts, health ministries, NGOs, policy and decision makers, caregivers, development partners, the media from across Africa and beyond and most importantly patient representatives for a collective voice towards sickle cell disease prevention in Africa and the world at large.

We have the obligation to do our best possible towards sparing this generation and generations to come from the financially devastating, emotionally and physically agonizing and stigmatizing effects of stigmatization, morbidity and mortality from Sickle cell Disease.

We look forward to hosting you at this conference and hope you have a great moment and memory of our hospitality.

Welcome to Lagos, Nigeria, to ACSCD 2019!
