Operating Instructions

To OperateMake sure disposable paper filter dust bag is in place. DONOT operate the cleaner without a paper filter dust bag.Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet and press theOn (l) - OFF (O) switch on top of base when ready tooperate.

General InformationThe performance of your new cleaner greatly depends uponcare and maintenance. The instructions in this manual willguide you in performing basic care and maintenance. Toobtain the most satisfying years of service read the instructionsand keep them handy for future reference.

Operating RecommendationsThis new ORECK XL High-Speed Upright is one of the finest, fastest, and strongest units in its class. You’ll love the way itcleans, gets under things, and it’s SO lightweight and easy touse. The following are a few simple suggestions regarding itsoperation:1. When inserting a new disposable paper filter dust bag—

FIRST PUFF OUT and OPEN THE BAG.2. When the disposable filter dust bag is full, REPLACE IT.3. If at any time the machine does not pick up properly or

makes an unusual noise, STOP OPERATION and service.4. Although your upright will pick up pins, paper clips, and

other small objects, it is recommended that these beremoved from the floor before you vacuum. Failure to doso may result in permanent damage to the motor suctionfan and its housing.

5. WARNING: Do not use your vacuum cleaner on dampor wet surfaces. This will cause damage to the vacuumcleaner and is dangerous to the user. Damage caused byuse on wet or damp surfaces is not covered underwarranty.

6. REPLACE THE BELT EVERY 6 MONTHS.7. Change the disposable filter dust bag at least once a

month—even if it is not full! The collected dust in the dustbag can cause odor, attract moisture, act as a breedingarea and can affect the efficiency of the cleaner.

8. DO NOT run the vacuum cleaner over cord. Therevolving brush could damage the cord.

9. Use caution when vacuuming over area rug edges andfringe.

Disposable Paper Filter Dust BagsDisposable paper filter dust bags play a very important rolein the efficiency of your ORECK vacuum cleaner. The purposeof the paper bag is to trap dirt, but at the same time it mustbe porous enough to allow air to pass through. If the paperbag becomes clogged, no air can pass through the cleanerand cleaning cannot take place, regardless of the cleaner’spower. To keep your cleaner operating at maximum efficiency, change the dust bag frequently. DO NOT FILL ABOVE THELINE INDICATED ON THE DUST BAG.Be sure the disposable paper filter dust bag is installedproperly.

All paper dust bags are not the same. Your ORECKdisposable dust bags have been designed to be used with the ORECK cleaner. Using bags other than genuine ORECKType CC disposable bags will affect the cleaning ability ofyour cleaner and could cause damage to it.

The BeltThe belt on your vacuum cleaner controls the speed of therevolving brush and is very important for the effectiveoperation of the cleaner. If the belt becomes stretched or cut,it will cause the revolving brush to stop completely or slowdown. See instructions in the manual for replacing belt.An extra belt is stored in the baseplate of your cleaner. Whenbuying replacement belts, use ONLY ORECK genuine belts.Belts other than ORECK belts will not operate the revolvingbrush correctly and may create undue stress which will causedamage to the motor and brush bearings. Using belts otherthan ORECK belts will void the warranty.

LubricationThe vacuum cleaner motor bearings are factory lubricatedand seated. Further lubrication is not required.

General Cleaner CareAt least once a month, checkfor and remove excessivelint, string or hair fromrevolving brush.Wipe the inside and outsideof the outer vinyl bag andthe outside of the cleanerwith a damp cloth. Alsoclean the connector deflectorassembly area, base ofcleaner and fan housingarea. Vacuum or shake dustout of the inner bag.

A little preventative maintenance will keep your cleanerlooking new and will ensure continued cleaning effec-tiveness.

CAUTION—WOOD FLOORS, SOFT (VINYL, ASPHALT TILE,ETC.) FLOOR SURFACES AND POLISHED FLOOR FINISHESUse floor and floor finish manufacturer’s recommendedmethods of cleaning. The metal strip on the base of thecleaner could be damaged if used on concrete orabrasive surfaces, and, therefore, cause damage to woodfloors, soft (vinyl, asphalt tile, etc.) floor surfaces andpolished floor finishes. The roller brush may also scuff verysoft finishes. Do not operate the unit while in the upright andlocked position. Do not let the unit run while in any onestationary position for any period of time. Keep the unitmoving while in operation.

IMPORTANT: On plush and new carpets, stuffing may occurdue to excessive fuzz and loose cuttings in the carpet.Stuffing could occur for the first few cleanings until all theloose material is removed. Due to the high efficiency of thecleaner, many older carpets will cause stuffing when thecleaner is first used on them.

Stuffing or Blockage

Under certain conditions it is possible to stuff or block the intaketube and the lower tube assembly. If your vacuum cleaner doesnot pick up properly, or makes unusual noise and the outer bagdoes not fluff up or balloon open, follow the following steps:

1. Check for blockage at themouth of the intakeopening. See illustration A.If there is blockage, removeit with long-nose pliers, ascrewdriver or coat hanger. If you can not reach theblockage, removebaseplate. See illustration B.

2. If the blockage is not at thebase, remove lower tube.See illustration C. Unhookretainer spring, releasingbottom of bag. Twist lowercollar counterclockwise toslide up. Pull tube out ofbase. Check for blockage. If blockage is in the tube, remove with a coat hanger.

3. If tube is not blocked, lookinto fan housing. See illus-tration D. Remove debriswith long-nose pliers, ascrewdriver or coat hanger.

4. To reassemble, check O-ringon tube, and replace ifdamaged. Vacuum will notoperate properly without thetube O-ring. Slide O-ring toapproximately 2" from baseof tube. Replace tube byfirst lining up slot at base oftube with inner tab insidefan housing. Then reinserttube and push down untilthe tube is seated. Makesure O-ring is in placeagainst fan housingopening. Replace andtighten collar until collarlocking tabs are locked inplace. See illustration E.Make sure collar is not crossthreaded on housing.

NOTE: If the actions in the Stuffing or Blockage section do notcorrect the problem, contact an ORECK authorized service centeror call the customer service center. US: 1-800-989-3535

CANADA: 1-888-676-7325

5. Many times blockage occursdue to a full dust bagcausing dirt to back downthe air flow system. Whenthat happens, the blockagewill be at the top of thesystem, starting in the areawhere the dust bag connectsto the connector assembly.See illustration F.
