ORDERS OF DRESS

2137 CALGARY HIGHLANDERS CADET CORPS

GENERAL DRESS STANDARDS (Source: Army Cadet Dress Regulations, CATO 46-01, modified Feb 2011)

1. Hair shall be neatly groomed and conservatively styled, and will not in any way interfere

with the proper wear of the beret.

a. Style and colour of hair will not be bleached or coloured in any unnatural tones such

as green, bright red, blue, purple, etc.

b. Must be secured away from the face.

i. Any accessories used to secure the hair will be as unobtrusive as possible and

will blend with the hair colour.

2. Cadets in uniform shall not wear visible body piercing adornments (tongue included), with

the exception of female cadet’s earrings.

a. Jewellery used for piercings of the eyebrows, the nose, the lips, etc. must be removed

when in uniform, or will be covered with a discrete piece of flesh-coloured tape.

3. Cadets shall not display tattoos that are deemed to be offensive (e.g. pornographic,

blasphemous, racist, etc.) or otherwise reflect discredit on the Canadian Cadet Organization

(CCO).

a. If a cadet is found to have such a tattoo, they must cover the tattoo at all times during

cadet training, whether in uniform or in civilian clothing.

Male Cadets 1. Male cadets must have short haircuts tapered at the back, with the sideburns not more than

halfway down the ear

a. The hair may not touch the top of the collar or the top of the ears

b. Will not exceed 15 cm in length

c. Refer to Figure 1.

2. Cadets must be clean shaven but if they can grow a satisfactory moustache in a short period

of time they can apply to wear one.

a. Beards shall not be worn except for those cadets who are adherent of the Sikh

religion.

b. Refer to Figure 2.

3. Except for medic-alert bracelets, and wristwatches, jewelry is not worn when in uniform.

a. Medic-alert bracelets and wristwatches will be placed on the left wrist at all times.

4. Male cadets may not wear earrings at any time while in uniform.

a. Those cadets who have ear rings must remove them during cadet activities, or if they

can not be removed, due to a risk of infection, they will be covered with a band aid

during cadet training.

Female Cadets 1. Female cadets with long hair must wear their hair up off the collar when in uniform.

a. Hair will be secured with hair gel in order to present a clean and professional

appearance.

b. Refer to Figure 3, 4 and 5.

2. Females may not wear eye makeup or other cosmetics.

a. If any makeup, it must be natural tones – no exuberant colours or shades.

b. Nail polish, if worn, must be clear, not coloured.

3. Females may wear one pair of small, plain, spherical, gold or gemstone stud earrings

centered in the earlobe. All others will be removed or covered with a nude coloured band-

aid.

a. Refer to Figure 6.

ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY CADET (RCAC) UNIFORM

(NUMBERED DRESS FORMS) (when worn with a tie for formal ceremonies such as the Commanding Officer’s (COs) Parade,

called Ceremonial Dress or Parade Dress or C1; when worn without a tie as normal dress for

duty, all seasons, called Routine Training Dress or C2. Source: Army Cadet Dress

1. Pants will be ironed, clean and free of wrinkles.

a. The pants will be creased along the front and back of the pant leg. The creases will

extend from the first belt loop of the pant, down the centre of the leg to the very

bottom.

b. The pants will be properly fitted and belted in order for the creases to extend in one

straight clean line.

2. The issued jacket/tunic will be clean and pressed with no creases shown anywhere on the

jacket/tunic;

a. The pockets will be pressed flat, along with the collar.

b. The nametag of the cadet will be positioned in line with the top of the right pocket,

centered with the middle of the name and the button.

i. The standard Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) name tag shall be detachable,

made of black and white laminated plastic plate 6.3 cm in length and 1.2 cm

in height, inscribed in capital letters with white lettering 0.6 cm high, and shall

indicate the surname of the cadet only.1

c. The tunic belt buckle will be centered, with the excess belt tucked under the

provided belt loops;

i. The buckle shall be adjusted so that the excess of the belt is not more than 8

cm.

ii. The loose end of the belt will extend to the left of the wearer when properly

worn.

iii. No slack should be visible in the belt.

d. Badges will be sewn on as per Cadet Standards and Corps standards. Refer to

Figures 7, 8 and 9.

3. The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) green shirt will be clean and free of wrinkles;

a. Creases shall extend from the centerline of the epaulette on each sleeve down through

the cuff.

b. The appropriate rank slip-on will be placed on the epaulette at all times.

c. The CF green shirt will be tucked into the pants at all times.

4. The issued brass belt will have the brass on the end of the belt and the fastener itself

touching when worn;

a. No black belt webbing is to be seen between the end of the belt and the front of the

buckle.

b. It will be used to hold up the dress pants at all times.

c. The belt buckle should be polished and buffed at all times.

5. The necktie is to be ironed flat;

a. The tie will be fixed with a full Windsor knot as shown in Figure 10.1

b. The necktie will be centered and will cover the topmost button of the CF green shirt.

c. It will be untied and re-tied every time it is used.

6. Parade boots (aka Boots Ankle/Shoes) will have the entire boot including the toe, heel, and

sides polished to a reflective shine, along with blackened welts.

a. Parade boots will be straight laced, with the top two eyelets being captain barred.1

b. The remaining laces will be tucked into the boot securely, to ensure that the laces

never show.

c. Boots shall not be modified with any type of metal cleats, hobnails or other metal

attachments to heel or sole.1

d. Refer to Figure 11 for straight across lacing of Parade Boots.

7. Headdress will be formed with a trench and will have no lint on it;

a. The cap brass will be positioned over the left eye.

b. The beret itself will sit level across the entire head, parallel to the ground with

approximately a two finger space between the beginning of the beret and the brow

bone.1 Refer to Figure 12.

8. The beret will be formed with a trench and will have no lint on it. Breaking in a new beret

takes time. After you have adjusted the tightening band to a comfortable fit and tied it off,

dampen (not soak) the beret and place it properly on your head. Wear until dry. Berets are

pure wool and will shrink considerably. Repeat if needed to get that perfect form fit. Keep it

on until it is dry or it may shrink too much to fit. When you have it just right, finish by

tucking the “tail” into the adjustment band. Refer to Figure 13.

UNIFORM (FTU) OR FTU C5 (worn on regular training nights other than Commanding Officer’s (COs) Parade & formal

9. The entire uniform must be clean and free of stains.

a. All pockets and the collar will be ironed and flattened.

b. There will be no creases or wrinkles in the uniform.

c. Dust cuffs (fabric liner on the inside of the cuff) will be unbuttoned and tucked into

the boot prior to lacing and blousing.

d. The pants will be bloused properly along the top of the FTU/Combat boot.

10. Wet weather boots (FTU or field boots) will be blackened to a matte so that there is no

shine whatsoever.

a. Will be laced in the herring bone method as shown in Figure 15.1

b. Extra laces will be tucked into the boot so that none are shown.

11. Tam O’Shanter (Tam) will be clean and free of wrinkles.

a. It will be ironed flat on the front and along the crease all around the headdress.

i. When properly ironed, the Tam will lay flat, parallel with the forehead.

ii. It will not be secured with pins or in any other fashion.

b. When worn, the cap badge will be placed over the left ear. Refer to Figure 16.

12. For 2137 Corps field training exercises (FTXs), FTUs are the only permitted field dress

for 2137 Cadets, arriving and departing from training. Cadets without FTUs are to arrive

in suitable civilian clothing. Civilian camouflage-pattern clothing or field uniforms from

other countries, are not to be mixed with FTU clothing, and should only be used as spare

clothing once in the field. Old olive drab dress can be worn in the field because it looks like

our FTUs and has been issued to our Corps in the past. It is to be phased out as quickly as

possible. CADPAT is NOT authorized field dress for 2137 Cadets participating in field

exercises and training and can only be worn legally by members of the Canadian Armed

Forces.

SPORTS DRESS (Attire worn for Sports Nights)

1. RCAC FTU pants or sweat pants (if not issued FTU pants).

a. Will be worn during sports nights and when otherwise authorized.

b. Shall be worn at the waist and must not allow underwear to be visible.1

c. No shorts, tights or spandex type pants/slacks.

2. Sports T-shirt (Calgary Highlanders blue T-shirt)

a. May be worn inside or outside the FTU or sweat pants.1

b. Tank tops are not permitted for any gender.

c. If issued, The Calgary Highlanders blue T-shirt is to be worn in lieu of other sports

tops.

3. The Corps Commanding Officer (CO) may authorize the wear of a T-shirt that bears the

name and/or crest and/or the motto of their Corps where a T-shirt is allowed during local

training.1

a. The T-shirt must be of a single and sober colour. It can only display the crest and/or

name and/or motto of the Corps.1 Our CO has approved the issue and wearing of the

Calgary Highlanders Cadet Corps blue T-shirt.

4. Running shoes will be worn with sports attire and will be appropriate for the event intended.

FITNESS TESTING DRESS (Attire worn for Fitness Testing)

1. For fitness testing shorts/pants.

a. Will be worn and when otherwise authorized.

b. Shall be worn at the waist and must not allow underwear to be visible.1

c. Will not be shorter than the middle of the knee.

d. No tights or spandex type pants/slacks.

2. For fitness testing sports T-shirt (Calgary Highlanders blue T-shirt)

a. May be worn inside or outside the sport shorts or pants.1

tops.

3. The Corps Commanding Officer (CO) may authorize the wear of a T-shirt that bears the

name and/or crest and/or the motto of their Corps where a T-shirt is allowed during local

training.1

a. The T-shirt must be of a single and sober colour. It can only display the crest and/or

name and/or motto of the Corps.1 Our CO has approved the issue and wearing of the

Calgary Highlanders Cadet Corps blue T-shirt

4. Running shoes will be worn for fitness testing.

ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY CADET (RCAC) HIGHLAND

DRESS UNIFORM AND KIT (worn for Commanding Officer’s (COs) Parade, called H-2 Duty Dress and H-3 Duty Dress.

Figure 17 shows H-2 Highland Duty Dress and Figure 18 shows H-3 Highland Duty Dress.

1. Glengarries will only be worn by Cadets who have passed their Glen test, and have been

with the Corps for no less than 6 weeks.

a. When issued a Glengarry, the Cadet will also draw a Tam O’Shanter (Tam) to

wear with the field training uniform (FTU) and will cease to wear a beret.

i. The Glengarry and Tam O’Shanter headdresses shall carry the cap brass of the

Calgary Highlanders Infantry Regiment in gold so as to differentiate Cadets

from the serving members of the Regiment itself.

ii. The Glengarry will have the cap brass positioned over the left ear when

worn.2

1. The Glengarry will be centered on the head, and the tip will be

centered between the eyes of the Cadet. Refer to Figure 16.

b. A Balmoral rather than a Tam O’Shanter will be worn by CIC Officers.

c. Playing pipers will wear all black Glengarries.2

2. Kilts will be worn only by Cadets who have passed their kilt test and who have achieved the

rank of Master Corporal (C/MCpl) or above OR those who are playing members of the

Pipes and Drums.

a. Kilts may be worn by all Cadets ranking C/MCpl and up and/or playing musicians,

only on Commanding Officer’s (COs) parade nights and other regimental parades

where such dress is indicated (e.g. St. Julien, Walcheren).

b. Kilts will be in Government Pattern #2 and have knife pleats. Box pleats are usually

reserved for senior Cadet Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and officers. The

issue of kilts is subject to availability.

3. Leather purse sporrans with the Calgary Highlanders 10th Battalion pin centered on the

front of the sporran, will be worn by all Cadets dressed in Highland Kit.

4. (Yet to be decided) Sgian Dubhs may be privately purchased; worn only by C/Sgt and more

senior Cadet ranks; and worn with all orders of Highland dress.

a. The Sgian Dubh must have a silver or black handle with a cairngorm stone.

b. It will be placed on the outside of the leg corresponding to the dominant hand of the

Cadet.

5. (Yet to be decided) Regimental ties will be worn only by C/Sgt and more senior Cadet

ranks. All other ranks will wear the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) green neckties issued to

Cadets.

6. Black webbelts will be worn with black plastic buckles (Fastex) or CAF brass buckles by all

ranks who are in Highland dress with C2 orders of Dress.1

7. (Yet to be decided) Cadets who wear Highland dress will privately purchase black, Oxford

style dress shoes.1

a. Oxfords must be polished to a glass shine.

b. Oxfords will be tightly laced with laces tucked into the shoes so as to conceal them.

c. Oxfords shall not be modified with any type of metal cleats, hobnails or other metal

attachments to heel or sole.1

8. Lovat hose will be issued from Clothing Stores to Cadets who qualify (passed the kilt test).

a. Lovat hose will be evenly folded once at the top in such a manner that the:

i. Top of the Lovat hose will show a fold back not exceeding 7 cm (2.75 in).1

b. Only Pipers will draw Red and Black Diced Hose.

9. Red garter flashes for hose will be in good repair and will be ironed flat.

a. Hose tops should be folded over the white elastic band so as to hide it.

b. Playing Drummers will draw double layered red garter flashes.2

10. Highland Kit will be at all times kept free of wrinkles and dirt.

a. The CAF green shirt will continue to be worn with Highland kit, with the appropriate

creases.

b. Kilt pleating should be kept crisp and neat.

CADET DRESS FOR COMMANDING OFFICER’S (COs)

PARADES AND ANNUAL CEREMONIAL REVIEW (ACR)

1. White gloves will be worn together with white belts by the Flag Party.2

a. Flag Party will wear Army Green Coatees instead of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)

Cutaways or CAF jacket/tunic pinned back.

2. The Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM), Company Sergeant Majors (CSMs), Platoon

Warrants and Pipers will wear a white plastic belt secured with the tri-service brass buckles

on top of their tunic.

a. Belts and buckles will be maintained in good condition with the brass buckle shined

and the belt itself free of tarnish or stains.1

3. Scarlet Doublets in the Non-Commissioned Members Pattern will be worn by playing

members of Band, excluding Pipers, who will wear a green Piper’s Doublet, also in the Non-

Commissioned Members pattern.2

a. When wearing Highland Kit, leather purse sporrans will be displaced to the right side

when bearing an instrument that requires it.

b. The bass drummer will wear a cheetah skin, with the head of the animal worn on the

wearer’s back, the forelegs worn over the shoulders and the sides secured by ties.2

c. The Pipers will have the appropriate Regimental Pipe Banners attached to the bass

drone of the bagpipes.2

d. The Pipe Major will bear a pipe ribbon in a pattern consistent with the affiliated

Regiment’s pattern.2

4. A cadet may receive medals from the following two sources:

a. The Canadian Honours System (CHS).

b. The Canadian Cadet Organization (CCO).

5. Medals from the CHS shall be suspended above the left breast pocket of the jacket,

immediately above and centered. CCO Medals shall be suspended above the right breast

pocket of the jacket, immediately above and centered.1

6. When two or more medals are awarded, they will be worn in order of precedence, with the

highest priority medal closest to the centre of the chest.1

a. Medals shall hang in one row so that they are fully visible.1

i. If not possible, medals shall be overlapped horizontally, the one with the

highest priority showing in full. Normally, five or more medals will require

overlapping.1

ii. The maximum width of the mounting is governed by the physique of the

individual.1

1. The bar shall not project beyond the arm seam of the jacket once the

mounting is centered with the jacket pocket.1

7. When two or more ribbons are worn, they shall be worn in rows, without interval between

the ribbons and the rows. Three ribbons shall be worn per row. If a fourth medal is awarded,

a second row of ribbons is required. If a seventh medal is awarded, a third row of ribbons is

required. Each new row shall be centered on the lower row. Ribbons shall be worn in order

of precedence, from right to left of the wearer for medals from Canadian Honours System

(CHS) and from left to right of the wearer for Canadian Cadet Organization (CCO) Medals,

with the highest priority ribbon closest to the centre of the chest on the top row if more than

one row is required. Where a single ribbon constitutes a row; it shall be centered above a

lower row.1 Refer to Figure 18.

REGIMENTAL PARADE POSITION KIT

1. Sergeants and seniors holding parade positions will carry drill canes consistent with the

infantry style.

a. At all times, the drill canes will have the head and tip polished, and be in good

condition.

b. The Corps Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) will carry a pace stick.1

2. The wear of regimental sashes is only authorized for Sergeants (C/Sgts), Warrant Officers

(C/WOs), Master Warrant Officers (C/MWOs), and Chief Warrant Officers (C/CWO).1

a. The sashes will be maintained in good condition, free of stains and other grime.

i. There will be no knots in the tassles.

b. With the exception of the C/CWO, the shoulder sash is worn from the right shoulder

falling off to the left hip.

i. The sash will be secured under the lapel of the jacket and the epaulettes if

necessary for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Cadet Jacket/Tunic, fold-

away.

ii. The C/CWO will wear the Maroon WO Sash, but the sash will extend from

the left shoulder and fall off to the right hip.

iii. If the sash partially or entirely obscures medals in their normal configuration,

the medals are to be pinned on the sash at the height and location that

coincides with the normal placement of the medals on the jacket.1

c. C/Sgts will draw a bright red sash.2

d. C/WOs, C/MWOs and C/CWOs will draw a darker, maroon coloured sash.2

DRESS FOR THE PIPES AND DRUMS BAND

Orders of Dress for the 2137 Calgary Highlanders Cadet Corps Pipes and Drums

Band differ from the regular Corps dress; is specified by the Band Officer and

staff; and is subject to availability.
