George Christoph Lichenberg (1742-1799) is noted as saying, “It is a golden rule not to judge men by their opinions but rather by what their opinions make of them.” I believe this is sound advice. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. By sharing my thoughts and listening to those of others, oftentimes I see the big picture more vividly.
Although. it also has become clear to me that some opinions have led a lot of people to ruin and destruction; spiritually, emotionally, financially, and physically. We must discern between good and bad choices.
When it comes to God and His thoughts on any matter, you can take it to the bank as truth. His “ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts.” But, they are right. This past Sunday in Bible class our dis-cussion was centered on the power of the gospel. Yes, “It is the power of God unto salvation.” (Romans 1:16)
Does it seem to you like a lot of the parables of Jesus have to do with the proper place of money in our lives? And specifically, the Lord often calls us to be generous and willing to help others in need. That theme continues with the three parables we will look at this Sunday. There are many Scripture passages that relate this teaching, such as 1 Tim. 6:6-19, and the example of the early church in Acts 2:42-47 and 4:32-37. In Matthew 6 Jesus tells us to make sure our treasures are in heaven, calling us to put God first today and trust tomorrow to Him.But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry
about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt. 6:33-34)
THE DREADED “S” WORD!Not long ago Lindsay was talking to Owen and Beau about the upcom-ing school year. Neither of the boys wanted their mother to be talking about school during summer. In fact, Beau told her not to use the “S” word! I have some bad news for Beau; his first day of school as a first grader is right around the corner. One of these days Beau will look back on his school days, and he will appreciate them. He will be grate-ful for the education he received and will probably even remain close friends with some of his schoolmates. I’m afraid that Beau’s attitude about school right now in the middle of summer sometimes reflects our attitude about church. There are times when we just don’t want to go! There are times when we just don’t want to put in the work we know we should be doing. There are even times when we are probably not too worried about our own righteousness. Beau, the first grader, does not get the big picture about school yet: but we know today that what we do to build our faith in the Lord’s kingdom is good for us. Unfortunately our own nature, living in a fallen world, and Satan’s attacks take a toll on us. Beau has parents that will help him make the right decisions about school; we have each other. We need that help. We need to pray for each other. We need time together to study God’s Word. We need our worship time together. We need each other’s help and encouragement to raise our children. We need our fellowship together and we need to be accountable to each other. We are not alone in this world; we have each other and we have God!

INTERESTED IN TEACHING ON A ?
TEACHING ONLY ONE OR TWO TIMES DURING A MONTH, RATHER THAN TEACHING AN ENTIRE QUARTER BY YOURSELF?Some of you may be interested in teaching, however, tackling a classroom by yourself for a quarter may be overwhelming due to the many activities in your life. If this is you, TEXT me at (903) 539-4101 and let me know you want to be on a TEAM of teachers that will rotate each week. The curriculum and activities for the class will be provided. Currently we need TEAMS or TEACHERS for the following classes for the Fall Quarter: o Sunday PM Ages 3-5 yr. olds o Wed PM Ages K-2nd – 1 teacher has expressed interest in rotating with others, are you interested?

The Douglas ProjectWest Erwin will provide a small portion of the school supplies for each stu-dent at Douglas Elementary as a part of our Douglas Project. The cost will be about $5 per student for 600 stu-dents. West Erwin members have been very gracious in past years to help with our Douglas Project and to bless the student and teachers of Douglas Ele-mentary. We have over 20 Volunteers that are involved in sharing their lives with the children & staff of Douglas. What a great opportunity to shine our light for the Lord. If you would be will-ing to help with the purchase of these school supplies, give your donation to Danny Snell or one of the staff. We will be assembling the school supplies on Sunday, Aug. 18 and delivering them to the school on Monday Aug 19. For more information, contact Danny Snell.
