“My God, Bones what have I done?”

These are the iconic words of Captain James Tiberias Kirk from the movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, after Captain Kirk did the unthinkable for fans of the science fiction TV show and franchise Star Trek—he destroyed the USS Enterprise which was symbol of inspiration, home and optimism for the characters and viewers of the beloved program. Destroying the Enterprise was like eating cornflakes without the milk, or having cheese with no bread or wine; you just can’t have Kirk, Spock and Bones without the Enterprise!

For those of us unfamiliar with pop culture references and shows like Star Trek, I am sure you can resonate with the tragedy and heartbreak of being displaced from home, of being disillusioned when once inspired, and pessimistic where there was once optimism.

To help guide us on our life’s journey, stripped of our normal leadership as a church, we are taking a break from our annual summer survey of the Psalms and spending some time with the remnant of believers in the Old Testament who were stripped of their normal leadership and displaced from their own Enterprise, the Temple of the Living God. This Summer, Grace will focus on the books of Haggai and Zechariah that speak to a people who are called to rebuild the Temple that was a symbol of inspiration to the nations, home to God and his covenant people, and a sign of optimism that one day the world would be made right again.

After Kirk heartbreakingly stares at the Enterprise burning up in the atmosphere and asks, “What have I done?”, Bones replies, “What you had to do, what you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.”. In Scripture, God allowed the destruction of the Temple in response to our sin, but through that death His people were reborn. In Christ, His Body, or Temple, (John 2: 19), was destroyed so that in his death we might live. This Summer as we read and reflect, may the words of Haggai and Zechariah inspire us all towards true faith and obedience.

“Then you will say in your heart: ‘Who has borne me these? I was bereaved and barren, exiled and put away, but who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; from where have these come?’” Isaiah 49:21 (NIV)

“Sing, barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the Lord. “Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left;     your descendants will dispossess nations     and settle in their desolate cities.” Isaiah 54:1-3 (NIV)

Let no foreigner who is bound to the Lord say, “The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.” And let no eunuch complain, “I am only a dry tree.” The Sovereign Lord declares— he who gathers the exiles of Israel: “I will gather still others to them besides those already gathered.” Isaiah 56:3,8 (NIV)

In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war.

Glorious are you, more majestic than the mountains full of prey. The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; all the men of war were unable to use their hands. At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned.

But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused? From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, when God arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth.

Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service.

Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders

The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service.

Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence— as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries,      and that the nations might tremble at your presence! When you did awesome things that we did not look for,      you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

I N T E R L U D E

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A Revelation 21:9-15; 22-27

Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls.

And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you,      who acts for those who wait for him. You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,      those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;      in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?

We have all become like one who is unclean,     and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf,      and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. There is no one who calls upon your name,      who rouses himself to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us,      and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.

But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter;      we are all the work of your hand. Be not so terribly angry, O Lord,      and remember not iniquity forever. Behold, please look, we are all your people. Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

Our holy and beautiful house,      where our fathers praised you, has been burned by fire,     and all our pleasant places have become ruins. Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E Adapted from Isaiah 42:10-17

Take heart brothers and sisters, the Lord says in his Word, that he will not restrain his mercies from us.   Hear and believe these words that promise light for us when we find ourselves in darkness: The Lord goes out like a mighty man, like a man of war he stirs up his zeal; he cries out, he shouts aloud,      he shows himself mighty against his foes.

For a long time I have held my peace; I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor;      I will gasp and pant. I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn the rivers into islands,      and dry up the pools. And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light,      the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them.

In Christ, we are forgiven and brought back home!  This is the Gospel!

May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 59

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me; deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men. For behold, they lie in wait for my life; fierce men stir up strife against me. For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord, for no fault of mine, they run and make ready. Awake, come to meet me, and see! You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel. Rouse yourself to punish all the nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil.

Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city. There they are, bellowing with their mouths with swords in their lips— for “Who,” they think, “will hear us?” But you, O Lord, laugh at them; you hold all the nations in derision. O my Strength, I will watch for you, for you, O God, are my fortress. My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies.

Kill them not, lest my people forget; make them totter by your power and bring them down, O Lord, our shield! For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride. For the cursing and lies that they utter, consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, that they may know that God rules over Jacob to the ends of the earth.

Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city. They wander about for food and growl if they do not get their fill. But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.

P A S S I N G T H E P E A C E As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you."

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Grant, almighty God, that all who confess your name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. (Silent prayer)

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. (Silent prayer)

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. (Silent prayer)

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as Christ loves us.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. (Silent prayer)

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

The Sursum Corda (Latin: “Lift up your hearts”) is an opening dialogue in the Eucharistic liturgy of the Christian Church and dates back (at least) to the third century. This text encourages the church to come with thankfulness and joy to the Lord’s table.

T h e S u r s u m C o r d a

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus (Latin: “Holy”) is a Christian hymn text, typically sung in response to The Sursum Corda. It is an invitation to join the voices of the church with the heavenly host, who are continually proclaiming the Father’s glory (Isaiah 6:1-3; Matthew 21:9).

12

Together we proclaim the mystery of the faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Let us go forth and serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God!

Members of the prayer team will be available to pray for you at the front of the sanctuary at the conclusion of each service.

B E N E D I C T I O N 1 Thessalonians 5:23

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Save the Date: Adoptive + Foster Family Picnic Sunday, July 15 Is adoption or foster care part of your family's story? Adoption and foster care can often feel like a unique path, but one of the great gifts of the community at Grace is there are many families that are on a similar journey! This picnic is intended to provide a time of connection and fellowship. If you are anywhere on the adoption or foster care journey (considering, waiting, with kids) and any kind of adoption (embryo, foreign, domestic), please plan to join us at 4pm on July 15th at Seward Park - Pavilion #5! Bring your own drinks and meat to grill and a salad/veggie/side to share. For questions, contact Joy Hadden at [email protected].

Michael Subracko Preaching July 22nd & 29th Our former Associate Pastor, Michael Subracko, and his family will be joining us for worship on July 22nd and 29th and Michael will be preaching on both of those Sundays. Michael is the Pastor of Resurrection Brooklyn Heights in New York and served as the Associate Pastor at Grace from 2005-2014. We are looking forward to welcoming him back for a couple of weeks this summer!

Women’s Happy Hour Saturday, August 4th @ 7-10 PM Please join us at the home of Shelly Morse in Renton, WA for a fun time of fellowship over the summer! You can bring a snack to share along with a towel and bathing suit if you want to swim. If you have any questions or for specifics about the gathering, please contact Jo Taniguchi at [email protected]. We hope you will join us!

Silent Retreat August 11 @ 9 AM-12 PM A silent retreat is an opportunity to take time away from the noise and distraction of everyday life, to rest and listen for God. Debbie (Smith) Tacke and Dan Huie will host a series of silent retreats this year, beginning with a half-day retreat on August 11 from 9 am - Noon (location TBD). There is no cost for this retreat. To register, please email Debbie at [email protected].

Volunteers Needed for Summer Grace Kids Grace Kids has need for volunteers this Summer, starting July 1st. With many volunteers needing a break from this past school year,(and with folks out of town), we are shorthanded and need a few more volunteers to promptly and faithfully help out in the following areas:

• Toddlers (2-3's) : The 2's and 3's likely may be combined for the summer, we have need of 2 volunteers.

• Pre-K: (4yo): We have need of 2-4 volunteers to add to the rotation.

• Ministry Facilitator: We are down ministry facilitators (who assist in providing support to volunteers and teachers) for the summer on the following dates, (7/1, 7/22, 8/12,8/26, 9/9). Volunteers for those specific dates are welcome, but we are in need of 2 new Ministry Facilitators--these positions are paid and would continue beyond the summer.

Please prayerfully consider serving in a vital component of Christ's ministry here at Grace (Matt 19:14)! Each of these opportunities would obligate an individual to serving once a month. If interested please contact Nicole Herring at [email protected].

New Community Groups! Fall 2018 Community groups are one of the main ways we grow together in our life with God and each other throughout the year, and we want as many people as possible to be able to participate in community groups. We are in the process of planning for community groups to start again in September, and are looking for people who have an interest in either hosting or helping lead a new group this year. If you are willing to share your living room space for people to meet and gather or if you are willing to help facilitate the meeting time f o r a g r o u p , p l e a s e c o n t a c t D e b b i e Ta c k e a t [email protected] to learn more about how to serve in this important ministry!

Zechariah 2

[1] And I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand! [2] Then I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.” [3] And behold, the angel who talked with me came forward, and another angel came forward to meet him [4] and said to him, “Run, say to that young man, ‘Jerusalem shall be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of people and livestock in it. [5] And I will be to her a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst.’”

[6] Up! Up! Flee from the land of the north, declares the Lord. For I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heavens, declares the Lord. [7] Up! Escape to Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon. [8] For thus said the Lord of hosts, after his glory sent me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye: [9] “Behold, I will shake my hand over them, and they shall become plunder for those who served them. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me. [10] Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord. [11] And many nations shall join themselves to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. [12] And the Lord will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and will again choose Jerusalem.”

[13] Be silent, all flesh, before the Lord, for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.
