Centering Moment Kathleen McTigueWe stand at a threshold, the new year something

new, still unformed, leaving a stunning power in our hands.

What shall we do with this great gift of Time, this year?

Let us begin by remembering that whatever justice, whatever peace and wholeness might bloom in our world this year we are the hearts and minds, the hands and feet, the embodiment of all the best visions of our people.

The new year can be new ground for the seeds of our dreams.

Let us take the step forward together, onto new ground, planting our dreams well, faithfully, and in joy.

A reading from the PsalterPsalm 8.4-5 (CEV)

“What are human beings that you think about them; what are human beings that you pay attention to them? You’ve made them only slightly less than divine, crowning them with glory and grandeur.”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able.

GradualSing them Over Again to Me

Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life;let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life;

Words of life and beauty teach me faith and duty.Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew2.13-15, `9 - 2` (NRSV)

“…an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and fl ee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod…

When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, ’Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.’ then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel.”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew25.35-36 (NRSV)

“[Jesus said], ‘I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are mem-bers of my family, you did it to me.’”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

ResponseSing them Over Again to Me

Words of Remembrance Celebrant: We remember that on the night of betrayal and desertion, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke the bread, and shared it with everyone present, saying…“Do this in memory of me.” In the same way, Jesus also took a cup, and off ered it to everyone present, saying, “This cup is the new covenant of all-inclusive love. Do this in memory of me.”

SunBurst NewsSunBurst NewsAnnual Meeting: January 15th Following 2nd

ServiceWe encourage EVERY member to attend our annual

meeting (always the 3rd Sunday in January). This is the meeting where we review the achievements and challenges of the previous year and cast the vision for the new year. This is an excellent way to stay informed about the health and direction of the church. We usually keep well under an hour, so you still have time for a tasty brunch afterward. We hope to see you on January 15th for our annual congregational meeting!

Renew Your CommitmentWe are starting 2017 highly motivated to reach

more people with the power of hope, the celebration of the sacred value of all people, the assurance of God’s all-inclusive and unconditional love, and with the affi rmation that the gospel call us to work for justice for all. We want to build community, strengthen connections, inspire devotion, give people resources for spiritual growth, minister to physical needs, and in all things glorify the omnipresent Spirit of Love.

To do all that we hope to do, we need every member and faithful friend of Sunshine Cathedral to renew their commitment of supporting the ministries of Sunshine Cathedral with time, talent, and treasure

You will be asked to make a generous pledge of support this year, and we hope that you will joyfully make that pledge and faithfully honor it so that we can be God’s love in action in a hurting world. Thank you for your commitment.

New Seating for Sunshine CathedralMake a pledge toward the Chair Campaign so

that Sunshine Cathedral can have new, beautiful seats and fl ooring.

For every $553.00 given (given at once, or pledges fulfi lled), the donor will have a name placed on one chair. Donors are making it possible for the church to have new seats, they are not pur-chasing their own place to sit nor will donors decide which seats will bear their names (it simply wouldn’t be possible to accommodate those desires). What we are doing is making it possible to have beauti-ful, new, comfortable seats and those who give the amount of a chair will have a name placed on a chair, somewhere. Arrangements can be made to pay in full – $553.00 or $25.14 a week, or $110.60 monthly from January – May, 2017. Pledges must be paid in full by May 2017.

For more information please contact Rev. Dr. Robert Griffi n, Executive Minister 954.462.2004 ext. 206 ([email protected])

Spirit & TruthOur devotional publication, Spirit & Truth, will be

distributed quarterly in 2017. This year the focus is on bible study and prayer. Each day’s refl ection begins with a bible passage followed by a refl ection from one of our spiritual leaders and it concludes with a positive prayer. Of course, there are other resources in Spirit & Truth, such as our weekly lectionary readings, our spiritual heroes, our daily offi ce (a guide for prayer throughout the day), and more. Spirit & Truth is meant to teach spiritual principles and in 2017 it will focus on increasing biblical literacy. Please use Spirit & Truthin your daily prayer life and share copies with friends. We will continue to support the Spirit & Truth outreach with a monthly “noisy” (spare change) off ering.

Hospitality MinistryThe Hospitality Ministry is looking for additional

A Course in Miracles: Thursdays at 6:30 pm“ACIM…teaches that the way to universal love and

peace—or remembering God—is by undoing guilt through forgiving others. The Course thus focuses on the healing of relationships and making them holy. A Course in Miracles also emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum, of which there are ‘many thousands.’ Consequently, even though the language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity, it expresses a non-sectarian, non-denominational spirituality...A Course in Miracles states that ‘its goal for you is happiness and peace.’ The Text also explains the basis for fear and guilt, and how they can be overcome through miracles, which are defi ned as maximal ‘expressions of love.’ The miracle is defi ned as the shift in perception from fear to love” (acim.org).

A Course in Miracles is facilitated at Sunshine Cathedral weekly by Rev. Margarita Rodriguez and Rev. Nancy Davis. All are welcome.

Sunshine Cathedral: Post-Denominational/Trans-Denominational

Sunshine Cathedral is affiliated with both the International Council of Community Churches (ICCC, or “ITripleC”) and Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC).

The ICCC (ITripleC) is an association of autonomous congregations and independent movements. The ITripleC includes progressive, evangelical, and liturgical parishes and is a member of the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches and is historically committed to racial diversity and social justice. The ICCC was formed in 1950 as the result of a merger of two organizations in the community church movement.

MCC was founded in 1968 by Troy D. Perry, a minister from the Pentecostal tradition who felt called to start a church that would welcome and affi rm the LGBT children of God.

Sunshine Cathedral has no formal creed but as Christians, Jesus is our primary faith symbol/example and we seek to understand the message and mission of Jesus by careful and open-minded study of the scriptures. Our worshiping community is open to those who do as well as those who do not primarily identify as Christian, and still, our roots are in the progressive Christian movements; and, the message and ritual of our church are inspired by the progressive Christian witness.

Our presentation of the Christian message is compatible with the 8 Points of Progressive Christianity (ProgressiveChristianity.org): [Progressive Chris-tians] (1) Believe that following the path and teachings of Jesus can lead to an awareness and experience of the Sacred; (2) Affi rm that the teachings of Jesus provide but one of many ways to experience the Sacredness and Oneness of life, and that we can draw from diverse sources of wisdom in our spiritual journey; (3) Seek community that is inclusive of all people, including but not limited to conventional Christians and questioning skeptics, believers and agnostics, women and men, those of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and those of all classes and abilities; (4) Know that the way we behave towards one an-other is the fullest expression of what we believe; (5) Find grace in the search for understanding and believe there is more value in questioning than in absolutes; (6) Strive for peace and justice among all people; (7) Strive to protect and restore the integrity of our Earth; (8) Commit to a path of life-long learning, compas-sion, and selfl ess love.

Pillars Society – Become a MemberA message by Dr. Keith D. Muller, Sunshine Cathedral Foundation Chair

Our celebration of Burning the Mortgage was made possible by support from our congregation but also and to a signifi cant extent by members of our Pillars Society who upon their death remembered the church and foundation in their wills and life estates, including life insurance policies. We will always remember them.

Now that our mortgage debt is paid off , we must remain vigilant for future needs. Our campus and buildings are not new. We can anticipate needs arising in the areas of plumbing, roofs, electrical, parking lot, technology, and other areas. In addition, as you know our church leaders have their eyes on future growth needs so that we can expand our outreach to more people, such as the recently announced new seating project.

Equally important is the need to recognize the heavy use of our campus and buildings by multiple community groups and organizations. This level of use will take a toll on our property. We need to

maintain our landscaping and buildings (painting and more) and to do this requires funds. Our volunteer groups – such as the landscape team – would benefi t from additional support.

The Sunshine Cathedral Foundation requests that each of us refl ect on our church and how we can help. Please consider completing the necessary paperwork to become a Pillar and let us know if you have remembered the church or foundation in your wills, IRAs, insurance policies or simply in your life estates. Our senior minister and staff remind us often that no gift is too small.

For answers to any questions about becoming a member of our Pillars Society please talk with me or any member of the Board of Governors. Or email me at [email protected]. Happy New Year!
