The Woodlawn/Roebuck Parkway congregation met in Woodlawn on 1st Avenue North between 53rd and 54th Street from 1957-1983. We have

been at our present location since 1983.

****After evening service on Sunday, August 10th, (in the auditorium), we will focus on

events/memories at the 1st Avenue location. Ancel Norris will give an overview of our 26 years at this location and then members will

have the opportunity to talk about their memories at the Woodlawn congregation. (Each 3-5 minutes, depending on the

number of speakers). Contact Ancel to be placed on the program.

****Also, following the evening service on

Sunday, August 17th, (in the auditorium), we will focus on events/memories at Roebuck Park-way. Mike McGill will give an overview of our 31 years at this location and then members will have the opportunity to talk about their memories at Roebuck Parkway (again, 3-5 minutes de-

pending on the number of speakers.) Contact Mike to be placed on the program.

Both presentations will be from floor level in the auditorium and will start 15 minutes

after service concludes. In the recent 60th Street program, personal memories by members were a highlight,

so don’t be hesitant about telling your favorite memory– these are not graded speeches

and humor is allowed!

The Mistake of Thinking that God Is Like Man

In our previous article we were noticing God’s statement to Israel in Psalms 50:21 when He told them, “These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will re-buke you, And set them in order before your eyes” (Psalms 50:21). Thinking that God was like man can lead to a number of other errors including the belief that if I can hide myself from man then I can hide myself from God which as we noticed is false. Likewise because we are able to deceive men, many are led to believe that they can also deceive God. The Bible is filled with examples where men have man-aged to deceive one another. Abraham was able to de-ceive Abimelech and Pharaoh concerning Sarah. Fear-ful that there would be those in Egypt who would kill him in order to take his wife Sarah, Abraham instructed her to tell everyone that she was Abraham’s sister. The people believe their lie and when Pharaoh was told of her beauty he sent for her and had her brought to his home. It was only when God afflicted Pharaoh that he learned the truth and sent Sarah back to Abraham. Later the same lie was successful in deceiving Abi-melech the king of Gerar (Genesis 20:1-7). Jacob was able to deceive his father Isaac into thinking he was Isaac’s eldest son, Esau. Due to the failing eyesight of Isaac, and with the help of his mother, Jacob was able to disguise himself and thus success-fully deceive Isaac. As a result he obtained the blessing that Isaac had intended to give to Esau. Such deception can never fool God. On one occa-sion Jeroboam’s son had become ill and he sent his wife to inquire of the prophet Ahijah to learn if he would recover. He told his wife to disguise herself so that the prophet would not know who she was. The text tells us that Ahijah “could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age” (I Kings 14:4b). No doubt Ahijah as a man could have been deceived just as Isaac was de-ceived, except for the fact that “the LORD said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be an-other woman” (I Kings 14:5). Therefore, when she came to Ahijah’s home the text tells us, “And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be an-other? (I Kings 14:6). The scribes and the Pharisees were not able to deceive Jesus even though they had deceived many of their fellow Jews (Matthew 23:2, 3). We may try to dis-guise who we are, pretending to be someone we are not so as to be able to deceive our fellow man but rest as-sured that we cannot and will not be able to deceive God.
