STANDING UP SO WE CAN STAND OUT!Last Sunday, Bruce Bevers preached for us at the Benevolence Center worship. Bruce talked about what he told his basketball players once their year had ended. He talked about preparation and how they needed to start preparing for next year right now. He said it was the same in our spiritual life too. We need to prepare every day so we could stand “toe to toe” against Satan. I could not get that phrase out of my head. It’s a great picture of what we face as Christians. We go “toe to toe” with Satan every day and God needs us to stand for Him! If we stand up for God every day, then we will “stand out” to those in the world that need Him! What do we stand for? Let’s look at some scriptures and see. “Come and stand here…”(Luke 6:8). Jesus told this to a man with a withered hand in front of angry scribes and Pharisees. We need to know that it’s best to stand with Jesus. “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Co.16:13-14). Our faith is essential to survive in this fallen world. We need to stand firm in our faith. “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Eph.6:10). May we never think that Satan won’t attack us because of our righteousness. We need to stand against his schemes. When we stand for what God wants on earth, then He will stand for us at Judgment!

Davy’s Diary Davy Carter, Outreach Minister

We begin a new morning sermon series this Sunday. It is, “That You May Believe: The Gospel of John.” It will take us through May, and even that is not enough time to share the wealth of teaching in the work of “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” Here’s a taste.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Growing Faithful FamiliesDanny Snell, Family Life Minister

Bible ClassJoin us for Bible Class this Sunday @ 9:00. The Spring Quarter will encompass a study from Ecclesiastes, Luke & a series on Life’s Big Questions.

March – Chasing the Wind-EcclesiastesMar. 3… Coming Up Empty – Eccl. 1:1-18Mar. 10… Chasing the Wind – Eccl. 2:1-26Mar. 17… When More Isn’t Enough – Eccl. 5:8-6:12Mar. 24… Wisdom! What Is It Good For? – Eccl. 9:7-18Mar. 31… What’s the Point? – Eccl. 11:9-12:14

Thoughts on Serving in the Kingdom…“Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”Matt 20:26-28

Christian Greatness Comes from Serving“SERVICE lies at the very heart of true Christianity. Jesus’ life stands in strong contrast to the self-seeking, ambitious attitude of so many today who are insensitive to the needs of others. By a life of unselfish service, Jesus set the perfect model for all his genuine followers to copy. Their lives, like his, should be distinguished by service and the spirit of giving.”

You may wonder, what does this have to do with me… Take a few minutes and do a little research on the word “serve” in the passage above. While you are at it… read the rest of the passage… Matt. 20:20-28. We should take a good look at what our culture has pushed us to (and we have allowed)… A very self-serving so-ciety. Would you join me in changing that?

A favorite saying of mine is, “HAPPINESS is an inside job.” It’s comforting to know that we can choose to be happy. It is our choice how we react to the various circumstances surrounding us.We cannot afford to allow anything to interrupt or interfere with our God given purpose. God has called us to be positive role models for everyone. At times that might require some adjustment to our regular routine. But, a change or routine cannot remove our joy or purpose of serving in the Kingdom.Jesus said the words He spoke to His own apostles were so, “…that His joy might remain in them and that their joy might be full.” One of my greatest joys, that which brings me happiness, is my service to West Erwin Church of Christ. I pray my joy can be seen and that it might abide in you too.

Even if this does not describe your home I am betting this month’s topic will help you encourage some of your friends. The most important strategy for parents in a blended family to embrace is to commit to making small steps and not force big relational leaps. It takes time and many small steps forward to build a healthy blended family. Time and consistency is the only path to help teens build trust. There are no shortcuts. 1). Allow Teens to Embrace a Slower Pace. 2). Allow Parent and not Step-parent to Have Difficult Conversations 3). Create Relational Moments for Blended Family 4). Fight for Parent Unity and Connection. Check your email for more info on this.
