In our culture, Christmas can often feel like a mad dash to get everything ready in time for December 24th. This is followed by an intense, 48-hour period where we try to squeeze in all of our celebrating. Instead of feeling joyful, we are often worn out.

This is a place where the church’s historical practices can help us. Traditionally, the Christmas celebration lasts for 12 Days—from December 25th through January 5th. This historic practice is what gave rise to the popular song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”.

The Twelve Days are when we get to fully celebrate the birth of Jesus. It’s a time of singing carols, reading the gospel stories of Jesus’ birth, being with friends and family, working less (if possible), eating great food, and thanking God that in Jesus, “the Word has become flesh and came to dwell with us”.

So instead of being like a frantic sprint followed by a collapse, the traditional observance of Christmas is more of a leisurely stroll. We don’t have to get in all of our celebrating over the space of two days. We can spread out the feast over nearly two weeks.

This not only takes some of the pressure off, it also teaches us something about true celebration. Our culture knows a lot about fleeting moments of euphoria. But observing an entire season of celebration teaches us something about developing lives of sustained joy. This is something that both we and our culture desperately need.

Joy to the world, the Lord has come!

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service.

Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders

Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A Isaiah 61:10-62:3; Galatians 3:23-26; 4:4-7

Old Testament I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;    my soul shall exult in my God,for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;     he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,     and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,     and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise    to sprout up before all the nations. For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,    and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,    and her salvation as a burning torch. The nations shall see your righteousness,    and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name     that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

Gospel Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.     But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E From Titus 3:4-7

Brothers and Sisters, the light has come, and has shown in our darkness.  The Grace of God has come in our flesh to redeem us out of every sin and calamity.  Say and believe these words of life: But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

In Christ, we are forgiven by His great grace and mercy!   This is the Gospel! Thanks Be to God!   May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Lord of Christmas Peace, we have done wrong. We have tarnished the gift you gave freely. We have buried you so deeply in our hearts, the world doesn't see you. We have not followed Christ, we have ignored your teachings, we have lived lives of apathy against your love, we have built fences and fortresses to push people away, and we have silenced the screams of those in need. Forgive us, we pray.Free us from our sin, free us from our captivity, free us to a life lived in Joy through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 147

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names.Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. The Lord lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre!He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry.His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

(Continued on the next page.)

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

John Newton, 1779 “New Britain,” 1831 (last stanza author unknown)

H Y M N O F G O D ’ S L O V E A m a z i n g G r a c e

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun.

Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For he strengthens the bars of your gates; he blesses your children within you. He makes peace in your borders; he fills you with the finest of the wheat. He sends out his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. He gives snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before his cold?

He sends out his word, and melts them; he makes his wind blow and the waters flow. He declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and rules to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any other nation; they do not know his rules. Praise the Lord!

P A S S I N G T H E P E A C E As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you."

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

The Sursum Corda (Latin: “Lift up your hearts”) is an opening dialogue in the Eucharistic liturgy of the Christian Church and dates back (at least) to the third century. This text encourages the church to come with thankfulness and joy to the Lord’s table.

T h e S u r s u m C o r d a

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus (Latin: “Holy”) is a Christian hymn text, typically sung in response to The Sursum Corda. It is an invitation to join the voices of the church with the heavenly host, who are continually proclaiming the Father’s glory (Isaiah 6:1-3; Matthew 21:9).

Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. New Sunday Schedule Begins Sunday, January 6th 2019 As the church staff and leadership examined the issue of our second service attendance and considered the congregational survey results, we believe the best option for us is to adopt the following new Sunday schedule:

•     9 AM worship (Nursery, Toddlers, Pre-K) •     10:45 AM worship (Nursery) •     10:45-11:30 AM Christian Formation Classes (Grace

Kids, YCG, Adult classes)

In addition—approximately once every two months—we will alter the schedule to have one worship service at 9am followed by a church-wide fellowship brunch for everyone after the service. For any questions, or to be added to our email list, please email Danielle at [email protected].

Garfield High School Winter Drive High school students have so many challenges already; then add the stress of being homeless. We are collecting basic needs and cold weather items for the homeless students at Garfield High School to extend care to them. Please bring the following items to church: socks, underwear, gloves, hats, and healthy snacks like granola bars and fruit snacks. We will be running this drive through Sunday, January 6. For more info contact  Coleen Marta at [email protected].

Grief and Loss Support Group NEW TIME: First Sunday of each month at 9:00-10:20 AM   Classroom #218 (down the hallway to the left of the sanctuary) This ministry provides a time and space to share our grief and loss with one another, so that we can be consoled in knowing that we are not alone in our suffering. If you are experiencing grief over the death of a loved one, infertility, the loss of health, difficult family dynamics, the loss of a job, or another loss, join us. There is no grief or loss too big or too small.  The participants simply listen to, and pray for, each person that shares. A moderator describes the group guidelines at the start of each meeting. We meet on the first Sunday of the month from 9:00 to 10:20 am; please come as often or as seldom as you need. If you have questions please contact Lisa Behringer at [email protected].

Silent Retreat January 18-20th, 2019 Palisades Retreat Center, Federal Way Dan & Renee Huie will lead this weekend silent retreat at the beginning of 2019 at the Palisades Retreat Center in Federal Way. The retreat will begin on Friday afternoon at 3:30 and will end at 2 pm on Sunday. During the retreat, each retreatant will meet with a spiritual director (Dan or Renee) to process times of prayer and to mutually discern the movements of the Holy Spirit, what is coming up in prayer and in relationship with God. Cost for the retreat is $225/person, which includes all meals and private room. Space is limited to the first eight people who register - registration closes on December 31st. To register, email [email protected].

Revoice Visit January 25-27th 2019 The weekend of January 25-27th,  Nate Collins and Stephen Moss—two key leaders of Revoice—will be making a trip to Seattle and to our church specifically.  In addition to giving a brief snapshot of  Revoice  during worship, Nate and Stephen will take part in a panel discussion on Sunday during Christian Formation Hour on Sunday, January 27th.  This will be a great opportunity to hear from them about their vision for how LGBT/Same-Sex Attracted people can actually flourish in a church like ours. They will also be taking time to answer some of the many questions I am sure we all have. If y o u h a v e a n y q u e s t i o n s , p l e a s e c o n t a c t J o h n [email protected].

Isaiah 61:10-62:3

[10] I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;    my soul shall exult in my God,for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. [11] For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise    to sprout up before all the nations.

[1] For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,    and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,    and her salvation as a burning torch. [2] The nations shall see your righteousness,    and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name    that the mouth of the Lord will give. [3] You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
