Chris Bowen Psalm 40:4-6 Pastor: Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! People: You have multiplied, O LORD my God, Your wondrous deeds and Your thoughts toward us; none can compare with You! I will pro- claim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. Pastor: In sacrifice and offering You have not delighted, People: But You have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offer- ing You have not required. Hymn No. 652 (vs.1 Children, vv. 2-4 Congregation) “Savior, Teach Me, Day by Day” Prayer of Adoration Rev. Chris Bowen Affirmation of Faith (To be read responsively) Rev. Chris Bowen Q & A 75 from Westminster Larger Catechism Pastor: What is sanctification? People: Sanctification is a work of God’s grace, whereby they whom God hath, before the foundation of the world, chosen to be holy, are in time, through the powerful operation of His Spirit applying the death and resurrection of Christ unto them, renewed in their whole man after the image of God; having the seeds of repentance unto life, and all other saving graces, put into their hearts, and those graces so stirred up, increased, and strengthened, as that they more and more die unto sin, and rise unto newness of life. To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest, to all who mourn and long for comfort, to all who struggle and desire victory, to all who sin and need a Savior, to all who are strangers and want fellowship, to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness, and to all who will come, this church opens wide her doors and offers welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Hymns No. 642 (vv. 1,2,4,5) “Be ou My Vision” No. 53 (vv. 1,3,5) “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” Confession of Sin (To be read in unison) Rev. Robert Row O God of unsearchable greatness, You have anchored me securely in Your grace and love. But why am I so easily harassed by doubt, fear, worry, and disbelief? Why does my soul never seem to be able to enter Your peace? Is it because the waves and storms in my life are beyond measure? Or is it because I focus on what I lack and want? O Lord, I have searched my heart, and I am silenced by the many comforts and blessings You have graciously granted me. I confess the source of lack of peace and restlessness is from within, not without. I expect a trouble-free life—a life You never promised Your children; and I want to be in control of my circumstances—an ability no creature can ever attain. Lord, help me to surrender—surrender my unrealistic expectations, and surrender myself to You. In my trials and temptations, grant my soul Your peace and Your rest. Amen. There are two ways in which a practical moralist may attempt to displace from the human heart its love of the world, 1) either by a demonstration of the world’s vanity, so as that the heart shall be prevailed upon simply to withdraw its regards from an object that is not worthy of it; or, 2) by setting forth another object, even God, as more worthy of its attachment, so as that the heart shall be prevailed upon not to resign an old affection, which shall have nothing to succeed it, but to exchange an old affection for a new one. My purpose is to show, that from the constitution of our nature, the former method is altogether incompetent and ineffectual–and that the lat-ter method will alone suffice for the rescue and recovery of the heart from the wrong affection that domineers over it.

— Thomas Chalmers, The Expulsive Power of a New Affection p. 1

The one thing most needed in our recovery and revival is a steady view of the glory of Christ, in his person, grace and office through faith, ...a con-stant, lively exercise of faith in him as he is revealed to us in Scripture. This is the only way to be revived and to receive such grace as will keep us fresh and flourishing even in old age.
