Sino-Danish Solar Energy Workshop at UCAS 2014

Workshop started with solar heating systems 1st July 2014 at UCAS Yuquanlu Campus in Beijing. Invited guest lecture by Prof. Zinian He, talking about utilization of solar thermal energy in China.

Sino-Danish Solar Energy Workshop at UCAS 2014

Executive summary:The 3rd Sino-Danish Solar Energy workshop was organized with SDC partners on UCAS Yuquanlu Campus in Beijing in 1-5 July 2014. The workshop covers solar heating systems, heat storage technology and photovoltaic technologies. Five Danish researchers and eight invited Chinese researchers had jointly contributed to the workshop.

The Chinese partners attended the workshop were Prof. Fengzheng Liu, UCAS, Prof. Zinian He, Beijing Solar Energy Research Institute Co. The Danish researcher attended the workshop were Associate Prof. Jianhua Fan, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)Associate Prof. Torben Lund, Roskilde University (RU) Post-doc Weiqiang Kong, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)Associate Prof. Donghong Yu, Aalborg University (AAU)Researcher Deyong Wang, Aalborg University (AAU)The workshop was organized by Prof. Fengzhen Liu (GUCAS), assoc. Prof. Jianhua Fan (DTU) and assoc. Prof. Donghong Yu (AAU).

A mixture of presentations, exercises and discussions were given during the workshop with an aim to introduce the different solar energy technologies to the students. The workshop was registered officially as a course in the course catalogue of UCAS, therefore a lecture room was allocated to the workshop. 15-20 students followed the presentations each day. The students obtained 1 ETCS point for five days.

Conclusion and suggestions: This form allowing UCAS students to participate was successful and did also result in good discussions and questions. It is our suggestion to continue such workshops but with slightly modified arrangement. Since background of the students is rather diverse, students with a PV background might have difficulty to understand the presentations/exercises on solar heating systems and vice versa. It is recommended to distribute a short introduction of less than 5 pages each for solar heating, DSC and PV to the students before start of the course. Such arrangement would allow students to read the materials and get prepared for the workshop.

The number of students following the course was lower than expected, due to the fact that in the start of July most students had already finished their semester and left for holiday. In the future, the workshop should take place two weeks earlier, which will be more appropriate for students.

SDC supported the workshop with 2.099.7 DKK of which approximately 1240 DKK was used for lunch of the speaker every day during the workshop, 860 DKK was used for one joint dinner for the involved partners. This expense will be reimbursed as operational cost within SDC Energy. During the workshop, Prof. Lund, Prof. Yu, Dr. Kong, Dr. Wang and the Danish subtheme PI Jianhua Fan visited Prof. Hongfei Zheng at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) in Beijing. Prof. Zheng gave an introduction of the research activities at BIT. The meeting was thorough and successfully. It was agreed on the meeting that Prof. Zheng will work at DTU as a guest professor for a period of 3 month starting December, 2014. Prof. Lund visited Tsinghua University with an aim to establish collaboration between RU and Tsinghua University in the field of DSC.

Within solar, Danish SDC participants are involved in 4 collaborative projects with Chinese colleagues, which formed the background for inviting Chines colleagues to the workshop. Our appreciation should be given to Prof. Fengzheng Liu, who had done a lot practical work to realize the workshop.
