• They are only found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra which are both islands of Indonesia.

• Scientists believe that they are second only to humans in intelligence and they could be the first great ape to go extinct.

• There are only about 12000-15000 remaining in Borneo (when there were about 20000 in 1996) and approximately 4000-6000 left in Sumatra (when there were about 10000 in 1996).

• Experts estimate that they could be extinct in as few as 10 years.

• Fruit makes up 65-95 percent of the orangutan diet.

• Fruit with sugary or fatty pulp are their favourite.

• Bornean orangutans eat at least 317 different types of food that include young leaves, shoots, bark, insects, honey and bird eggs.

Social Life • They live a more

solitary life than other great apes.

• Adult males mainly live alone.

• They are diurnal meaning that they are active during the day

• Orangutans breed slower than any other primate and have approximately 3 offspring in their lifetime and Orangutans breed slower than any other primate and have approximately 3 offspring in their lifetime. 

• They also tend to kiss as shown in the picture to the right.
