We are extremely fortunate to have such an active neighboring LA ISA section. For those of you who attended Instrumentation 2009 you understand what I mean.An impressive event filled with many exhibits, training classes, networking andfood (and this was all FREE) was seamlessly organized by John Prince and the LAstaff. I was thoroughly impressed with the turnout and saw many familiar faces. Ilook forward to seeing this event continue to grow from year to year.

Our March presentation was be by our very own board member RomelBhullar. You may have also seen him during one of his two training classes(Process Control for Dummies or Safety Instrumented Level Training) atInstrumentation 2009. His presentation earlier this month was on IndustrialEthernet, an integral part of control systems these days. Romel is very well versed

and holsters over 38 years of invaluable experience. It was good to see you all who made the trip out forthe snacks, socializing, and this interesting topic.

Finally, I would like to bring to your attention next months tour of the Orange County SanitationDistrict. This should be a very informative tour of the third largest wastewater agency west of theMississippi River. I strongly encourage you to bring family members and friends interested in seeingwhere we safely collect, treat, and dispose of wastewater generated by 2.5 million people living incentral and northwestern Orange County. Biomass: pilot plant tocommercial scale

ISA Student Section News ISA Orange County Section

BlueFire Ethanol, Inc., has been awarded funding from the U.S.Department of Energy to construct a commercial scale cellulosic ethanolproduction facility. Its biorefineries will be located in markets with thehighest demand for renewable transportation fuels thereby dramaticallyreducing delivery costs while simultaneously increasing the areasbiofuel supply and reducing the waste streams sent to landfills.

A presentation made to the OC Section last month included adescription of the Bluefire/Arkenol Acid Hydrolysis process for theconversion of biomass materials to fermentable sugars and higher valuechemicals. The conversion technologies of thermochemical, enzymaticand chemical hydrolysis conversion technologies was described anddiscussed, along with pilot plant unit operations and commercial scale-up, typical commercial plant layout and requirements and a comparisonof the economics of current to future cellulosic ethanol production.

Control Microsystems,Sage Designscontribute toBakersfield Collegeby Sean Caras, Associate Professor, Electronics Technology,Bakersfield College

Thanks to a generous donation fromControl Microsystems, and facilitated bySage Designs, Inc., a new generation oftrained automation technicians will utilizecurrent SCADA technology. BakersfieldCollege, a community college of almost17,000 students in Bakersfield California,is the recipient of six SCADAPack 32RTU’s, software, and instructor training.

Our Electronics, Instrumentation, and Automation program has anenrollment of approximately 170 students per semester, many of whomare seeking certification and degrees in Electronics Technology, or areindustry professionals seeking skills updating. While we are well-equipped in the areas of industrial electronics, motors and controls, instrumentation and process control, and radio/telecommunications, theSCADAPack controllers will meet an industry-critical need.

Our Instrumentation/Process Control Trainers are currently stand-alone systems, utilizing simple PID controllers. The SCADAPacks willbe interfaced to the process control trainers, allowing more advanced

process control functions to be simulated with our trainers in anadvanced-level course. We hope to purchase radios for each of thedonated SCADAPacks, and set up a SCADA system utilizing our fiveprocess control trainers to simulate an industrial environment. Inaddition, we are hoping to purchase additional SCADAPack RTU’s andradios to interface to variable frequency drive units in our motorcontrols lab, allowing a wider range of devices to be included in theSCADA system.

Through industry surveys we have taken with members of ourlocal ISA (International Society of Automation) section, three-fourthsof the respondents believed that Bakersfield College should expose ourstudents to several different manufacturers for PLC’s and controllers.PLC’s and controllers will eventually be deployed in most of ourclasses in some form or another. Our PLC stock was previouslydominated by one manufacturer.

The SCADA software from Control Microsystems was highlyrecommended to us by one of our industry advisors, because it was feltthat the software’s learning curve and user features would allowstudents to implement more advanced functions in a quicker timeframe.

An additional advantage of the SCADAPack product has been theprovided interface board that we will be able to use with our students. With every other industrial product we have deployed in our labs, ithas been necessary to build input and output simulators and otheritems necessary for students to work with the product. With theSCADAPacks, we were provided with a complete setup that a studentcould use right from the box.

We, at Bakersfield College, are excited to have this currenttechnology available to our students! Thanks to the generosity ofControl Microsystems, and the support of Sage Designs, Inc., ourstudents will soon be able to set up and manage a simulated industrialenvironment within our electronics labs using SCADA RTU’s andsoftware.

• Memosens pH

sensors use digital

signal processing, eliminating long cable runs, high
