BusinessWorks Monitoring Challenges

• BusinessWorks environments are very challenging to monitor

• Not uncommon for large enterprises to have hundreds or even thousands of BW engines, EMS servers, custom adapters and orchestration processes

• Typical subsystems often include: – infrastructure (hardware/network/OS)

– messaging (EMS)

– orchestration (BW)

– applications (business services)

Common Questions

1. Prioritize and Focus: How can I prioritize and focus on the BW issues that have the biggest impact on my critical business applications and services?

2. Be More Proactive: How can I be more proactive and correct problems before my users become aware of them?

3. Reduce Complexity: How do I reduce complexity to understand which BW Servers are clustered and load-balanced and what behavior is "normal “?

4. TIBCO in Heterogeneous Environments: How does an end-to-end perspective expose interdependencies that are critical to the understanding of how TIBCO and non-TIBCO elements support my critical applications?

Are You Ready for 10 Tips that Can Answer These Questions?

Tip #1 – Avoid Tunnel Vision

Look Upstream and Downstream….

Here we see a comprehensive view of the EMS servers, Hosts etc. that

participate in the performance and availability of our BW application

Over time products change but old habits die hard.

1. Take advantage of new, automated process provided

by the vendor.

2. Realign your environment to meet new business

requirements.

3. Finally, technology is always changing – are you up to

date on the latest and greatest?

4. Can you reduce complexity and avoid hardware

upgrades by using new techniques?

Tip #2 – Institute a Health Check Program

Tip #3 – Identify the Weak Links

• Make sure that you can detect repeat offenders…

• Use Historical Filters to improve your SLA performance

by clearing up a large number of incidents created by a

single source.

Correlate JVM behavior with demand. You need to watch the JVM,

increase/decrease size to optimize use of resources and to avoid

slowdowns at moments of high demand.

Tip #4 – Don’t Forget the Hidden Machines

• Use intelligent dashboards to emphasize failures with the moneyed-apps.

• Have quick context-driven drill downs to find Root Cause.

Tip #5 – Prioritize Support Activities

Tip #6 – Understand Dependencies

Plan ahead: Enable ClientID during design time to

improve connection source/destination

By Enabling ClientID

Dynamic environments are now the norm – you can’t do it by memory:

• Where every resource resides

• Which are the heavily used, politically sensitive systems

You need to segregate your assets so that your 600+ engines are organized.

Your monitoring system should provide ‘profile-driven’ dashboards that separate

you BW community into:

• Different Geographic regions

• Different Datacenters

• Different Business sectors/divisions

• Critical Vs. non critical DR-tagged systems

Tip #7 – Divide and Conquer

Organize Your BW Environment

• Are your resources being efficiently utilized?

• Are your load-balanced clusters really balancing the load?

• Are the right services getting the right resources ?

Here we see the number of sessions distributed across multiple servers – with optimal

balancing, all servers should have be the same color.

Tip #8 – Avoid Unnecessary Upgrades

Manage Demand on Your Infrastructure

Page 17: Oracle Coherence Monitoring 101

• Are your performance issues caused by the very the monitoring systems designed

to avoid these problems in the first place?

• Your monitoring system should provide self-monitoring and – if possible – self

healing.

• Can your monitoring system scale to meet your increasing demands?

Tip #9 – Monitor the Monitor

Page 18: Oracle Coherence Monitoring 101

• Events happen all at once so you need to see the effect all at once

• A time-synced, holistic view of an infrastructure segment or application

is essential to understanding cause and effect

Tip #10 – See All Dimensions at a Glance (Including Time)
