ORACLE AND ITS RELATED TECHNOLOGIES

MIDDLEWARES

Oracle SOA Suite is a comprehensive, hot-pluggable software suite to build, deploy and manage Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA). The components of the suite benefit from common capabilities including consistent tooling, a single deployment and management model, end-to-end security and unified metadata management.

Oracle SOA Suite's hot-pluggable architecture helps businesses lower upfront costs by allowing maximum re-use of existing IT investments and assets, regardless of the environment (OS, application server, etc.) they run in, or the technology they were built upon. Its easy-to-use, re-use focused, unified application development tooling and end-to-end lifecycle management support further reduces development and maintenance cost and complexity.

The products contained in this suite are listed in the Component Index below. You can use that list to navigate to the individual product pages.

1.1 What Is TopLink?

Oracle TopLink builds high-performance applications that store persistent object-oriented data in a relational database. It successfully transforms object-oriented data into either relational data or Extensible Markup Language (XML) elements.

Page 3: Oracle and its related technologies

Oracle TopLinkOracle TopLink delivers a proven standards based enterprise Java solution for all of your relational and XML persistence needs based on high performance and scalability, developer productivity, and flexibility in architecture and design.

Understanding TopLink Workbench

TopLink Workbench is a separate component from the TopLink runtime–it lets you graphically configure descriptors and map your project. TopLink Workbench can verify the descriptor options, access the data source (either a database or an XML schema), and create the database schema. Using TopLink Workbench, you can define TopLink descriptors and configurations without using code.

TopLink Workbench can be used during the development phase of the development process (see "Developing Your Application With TopLink"). Typically, this phase includes the following:

1. Defining an object model (a set of Java classes) to describe and solve your problem.2. Creating a TopLink Workbench project, importing your Java classes and data sources,

and using descriptors to describe how the Java classes map to your data source model.3. Creating a TopLink session and registering your descriptors. In your application, use the

session to retrieve and store objects from and to the data source.

Introduction to Toplink Grid with Oracle CoherenceOracle TopLink enables you to scale out JPA applications using Oracle Coherence. TopLink Grid provides applications with a number of options on how they can scale, ranging from using Coherence as a distributed shared (L2) cache up to directing JP QL queries to Coherence for parallel execution across the grid to reduce database load. With TopLink Grid, you do not have to rewrite your applications to scale out. You can use your investment in JPA, and still take advantage of the scalability of Coherence.

TopLink Grid provides the following benefits:

Simple application configuration using annotations or XML configurations that align with standard JPA.

The ability to store complex object graphs with relationships in Coherence. The ability to selectively choose which entities are stored in the grid and which are stored

directly in the backing database.

Page 4: Oracle and its related technologies

Allows you to execute JP QL queries in the Grid or directly against the database. Allows you to store entities with both eager and lazy relationships into Coherence.

The WebLogic Server SolutionOracle WebLogic Server is a scalable, enterprise-ready Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) application server. The WebLogic Server infrastructure supports the deployment of many types of distributed applications and is an ideal foundation for building applications based on Service Oriented Architectures (SOA). SOA is a design methodology aimed at maximizing the reuse of application services. See http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/soa/index.html.

The WebLogic Server complete implementation of The Sun Microsystems Java EE 5.0 specification provides a standard set of APIs for creating distributed Java applications that can access a wide variety of services, such as databases, messaging services, and connections to external enterprise systems. End-user clients access these applications using Web browser clients or Java clients. It also supports the Spring Framework, a programming model for Java applications which provides an alternative to aspects of the Java EE model. See Programming Models.

In addition to the Java EE implementation, WebLogic Server enables enterprises to deploy mission-critical applications in a robust, secure, highly available, and scalable environment. These features allow enterprises to configure clusters of WebLogic Server instances to distribute load, and provide extra capacity in case of hardware or other failures. New diagnostic tools allow system administrators to monitor and tune the performance of deployed applications and the WebLogic Server environment itself. You can also configure WebLogic Server to monitor and tune application throughput automatically without human intervention. Extensive security features protect access to services, keep enterprise data secure, and prevent malicious attacks.

Page 6: Oracle and its related technologies

Programming Models

WebLogic Server provides complete support for the Java EE 5.0 specification at http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/api/. For more information, see the following WebLogic Server programming guides:

Web Applications provide the basic Java EE mechanism for deployment of dynamic Web pages based on the Java EE standards of servlets and Java ServerPages (JSP). Web applications are also used to serve static Web content such as HTML pages and image files.

Web Services provide a shared set of functions that are available to other systems on a network and can be used as a component of distributed Web-based applications.

XML capabilities include data exchange, and a means to store content independent of its presentation, and more.

Java Messaging Service (JMS) enables applications to communicate with one another through the exchange of messages. A message is a request, report, and/or event that contains information needed to coordinate communication between different applications.

Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) provides pooled access to DBMS resources. Resource Adapters provide connectivity to legacy and other external enterprise systems. Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) provide Java objects to encapsulate data and business logic. Remote Method Invocation (RMI) is the Java standard for distributed object computing,

allowing applications to invoke methods on a remote objects locally. Security APIs allow you to integrate authentication and authorization into your Java EE

applications. You can also use the Security Provider APIs to create your own custom security providers.

WebLogic Tuxedo Connectivity (WTC) provides interoperability between WebLogic Server applications and Tuxedo services. WTC allows WebLogic Server clients to invoke Tuxedo services and Tuxedo clients to invoke EJBs in response to a service request.

Overview of WebLogic Server Application Development describes developer tools and best practices for coding WebLogic Server applications.

For additional programming topics, see the Developing Applications on Oracle WebLogic Server topic page.

What is a Standard API Signature?

An Application Programming Interface (API) enables software applications to connect to and interact with other technologies. An API signature describes the characteristics that an XBRL-based API should have—for example, the name of functions, their input types, and their output types—while leaving the choice of technology and the implementation details up to the software vendor or individual implementing the API.

How can I get involved?

It is recommended that a task force be assembled by bringing together individuals that span the XBRL spectrum.

Software Architects and Developers – to provide their experience at designing software from an interface perspective and the knowledge as to how commonly applied software design patterns can lead to clean and robust API designXBRL Practitioners – to provide their experience with building XBRL applications to help define the set of interfaces which will be the most usefulProgramme Manager – to provide the vision to the team by defining the tangible deliverables and expressing how those deliverables bring value to the XBRL communityProject Manager – to lead the team by defining the set of goals to be achieved, implementing a process to achieve those goals, and driving the efforts of the team to ensure the goals are met

What's the Goal?

The XSB proposes to standardise the APIs created for XBRL by providing blueprints for them in the form of API signatures. In the future, a well-adopted set of standard API signatures will provide more choice, consistency, and interoperability in the software and tools used for XBRL-based projects.

What are the benefits?

Standardising how XBRL interfaces with other technologies offers the following benefits:

Providing software developers with a familiar point of entry into XBRL Serving as a useful learning tool for developers wishing to incorporate XBRL Encouraging open source implementations of the API signatures Enabling greater consistency across vendor tools and greater interoperability across

vendor implementations of XBRL
