LODGING EVENTS Moab Happenings SHOPPING DINING Volume 32 Number 2 Section B May 2020 The Moab Music Festival’s 28 th season of music in concert with the landscape® offers respite and sanctuary to rejuvenate the soul and awaken the senses. After facing the world’s current challenges, this “once-in-a- lifetime” (Chamber Music magazine) experience will be vital, and from August 31 thru September 17, 2020, audiences can bask in breathtaking scenery and topnotch performances of world-class music in Southeast Utah’s ruggedly stunning red rock desert. Running the gamut from chamber music to Latin and jazz, Festival Artistic Director Leslie Tomkins and pianist and Music Director Michael Barrett will bring audiences to the worldwide “party” celebrating Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250 th birthday. Beloved by audiences, Beethoven’s varied interests – including nature – and immense breadth of imagination will be featured in works both famous and rare. The Festival kicks off with a custom 4-day/3-night Cataract Canyon Musical Raft Trip (September 14 through 17) on the Colorado River, featuring daily concerts, fine food and wine, and good company. Other highlights include Russia in the US, which explores the immense impact of Russian émigrés who transformed the music world, including two generations of American concert and theater composers; My Heart is in Havana, an evening reveling in Cuba’s irresistible melodic, rhythmic, and expressive imagination with Grammy- winning master clarinetist and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera and his virtuoso quintet; the Festival debut of The Manhattan Transfer, offering hits in its signature pop, jazz, R&B, rock & roll, and swing styles; and Floating Concert, a new event where audiences will enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before boarding the mighty Queen for a low-speed, open-air trip up the Colorado River (with a grand piano!), where it will float silently for a private, sunset concert amidst canyon walls. There will be plenty of electricity to go around at the Festival’s free annual Labor Day Rocky Mountain Power concert, when powerhouses D’Rivera and The Manhattan Transfer share the stage. Kids, entire families, and picnics are welcome to catch the (heat) wave when superstar violinist Charles Yang and pianists Michael Barrett, Michael Brown, and Peter Dugan join the fun. The schedule includes three of the Festival’s signature Grotto Concerts, a jet boat excursion into the heart of Canyonlands, an intimate evening of music at a private house among the buttes and mesas of Red Rock country, and a private ranch concert. Wonderfully and uniquely characteristic of the Festival are the many opportunities to meet and mingle with the musicians in Q & As at open rehearsals: after the Grotto concerts when audiences enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and wine, sharing the trail along musical hikes to a natural concert hall every weekend.
