It’s March, winter is about over and spring is about here. This year March 11 begins Daylight Savings Time. According to all the skeptics and electronic experts around, we could be facing some problems with our electronic lives as most items are programmed to switch us over to DST in April. THE GEO OPTIPINION Volume 43 Issue 6 www.gardenaoptimist.org March 2007 A MONTHLY BULLETIN OF THE GARDENA EVENING OPTIMIST CLUB ZONE 23 – PACIFIC SOUTHWEST DISTRICT OF OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL President’s Message — DST in April. Now for the exciting news. The Evening Optimist Club of Gardena received its Honor Club Award at the District Quarterly Meeting in Solvang. Lt. Gov. Diana Carsola was on hand at our Anniversary Dinner, Feb. 20 to hand out awards to Dwayne Hayden, Joan Aoki and June Yasaki for the Honor Club Award. Congratulations also go out to Mas Nagaoka for being Honor Lt. Governor for Zone 23. Our Teriyaki Chicken fundraiser has come and gone. Final numbers are still not in yet, but preliminary results indicate another successful year. A big hand goes out Dennis Watanabe and Charlie Oyagi and the Teriyaki Chicken committee and all of our members who participated in this event. Each day should start off looking to the sunny side of everything. Look to the positive side of things, even if the cup is only half full. There are all types of people out there, will all types of points of view. Even though they may say they are optimist(ic), don’t let them get you down with their negative view of life. Every day look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. What’s going on? All the chicken is gone. Great job everyone! Special thanks go out Troop 683 for selling a large number of extra chickens ordered for walk in sales. The Basketball Committee is getting started for the upcoming 2007 fall season. Contact Ron Shintani to volunteer some of your time during the season. What’s coming up? The Oratorical Contest deadline is almost here – March 10, 2007. Get your kids or kids that you may work with in some youth activities to enter the contest and possibly win the Club Contest. There were a record number of entries for the essay contest this year – 20 essays. Chairperson John Ing and his trusty sidekick Jim Carroll have been doing a great job getting schools, teachers and students to participate. Join us in congratulating the top entries at our Awards Dinner, Tuesday, March 20 at the Depot Restaurant in Torrance. The Junior Blind Olympics is coming up next month. The Evening Optimist Club of Gardena and Troop 683 will be signing up for the 100 yard dash. There is a Volunteer Registration form with this newsletter. This form needs to be filled out and returned prior to the activity. You can turn in our filled out form to the Club by March 13 at the Board meeting or mail or fax the form yourself to the address listed by March 23, 2007. Please contact BJ Coonce, JBO Chairman, if you have any questions. Mahalo, Robin
