BOXTED WI Members at the February meeting heard an interesting and informative talk by Peter Carrington, the lead volunteer of MacMillan Cancer Care, Colchester. He described his work in some detail and gave a full account of how money raised locally (such as in the annual coffee mornings) is spent. LANGHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL The staff and pupils of the Primary School are having a busy term following the Christmas break. In January six children who belong to the Chess Club (which is run by David Morell, a school governor) took part in a chess competition at Great Oakley School. They all behaved impeccably and did the Langham School proud in their achievements. Thanks to the hard work of FOLS and their supporters, the Christmas Fair made over £500 for school funds. Congratulations to Teaching Assistant Natalie Green on her recent marriage.

BOXTED AIRFIELD HISTORICAL GROUP

In March the Group will enjoy a presentation by Richard Turner on the Roger Freeman Collection. Freeman, who lived nearly all his life at Dedham, was the leading authority, recognized as such world-wide, on the history of the United States 8th Air Force based in East Anglia during World War II. His collection of 15,000 prints and slides is deposited at the Imperial War Museum. The presentatioin will also reveal documents and letters donated to the Boxted Airfield Museum. The meeting will start at 7.30 pm on 17 March at the Museum, which is off Langham Lane, Langham. Non-members of the Group are very welcome for a donation of £3 to the Museum’s Funds.

In aid of Chapel funds

LANGHAM WI Pip Wright entertained the February meeting with his account of the amazing John Heigham Steggall, “The Suffolk Gipsy”, who, in his long life some two hundred years ago was variously a surgeon, a soldier, a seaman and, as a “man of the cloth”, the vicar of Great Ashfield. Further pleasures await the WI members this year: a “snowdrop trip” and a visit to Boxted WI as well as attendance at the County and Spring Valley WI meetings. They will host the 100 Club Coffee Morning on 25 April.

SMARTYPANTS QUIZ On a cold 31 January evening ninety knowledgeable quizzers turned out for the annual Smartypants Quiz in aid of Boxted Village Hall funds. It was a most successful evening, £280 being raised. For the first time, there was a three-way tie, the eventual winner being decided on a tie-break question. The Hall Committee is grateful to all those whose efforts contributed to the success and of course all those who took part on the night.
