  • The best way to beat the hot and sticky summer heat is to plunge yourself into refreshingly cool water. With Outdoor Recreation Equipment Checkout Centers (ECC) boat rental program, diving into the water has never been easier!

The ECC has added ve new boats to its eet for summer use, bringing the total number of available rental boats to 25. We just purchased three new Tahoe ski boats, one new 60 horsepower pontoon, and one new 40 horsepower p o n t o o n , s a i d E C C B u s i n e s s Manager, Heather Wahl. The most popular rentals are the Tahoe and pontoon boats during the summer season.

Also available to rent are kayaks, canoes, Jon boats, shing boats, and more. Each boat is stocked with all the necessary safety equipment such as a re extinguisher, flotation devices, one oar, and life jackets. Boaters can also rent wake boards, knee boards and water skis to add more adventure while on the water. The ECC sta will spend time at each rental to familiarize boaters with the craft.

A full inspection of the boat takes place in order for renters to feel comfortable while on the water. We will start the motor and show the renter how everything works, explains Wahl.

A Boater Safety Card is required in order to rent a boat from the ECC. Only the person checking the boat out is required to have a Boater Safety Card, says Wahl.

    By Jennifer Palalay

Boating Fun with ECCHowever, anyone with a motor vehicle license can operate boats while on Kentucky lakes. A 30 minute Boater Safety course is oered for $3 at the ECC. Another option is to visit www.boatus.org to take the Boater Safety course and receive proper certication for free.

Wahl suggests boating on Rough River, Nolin, and Barren River Lakes. There is little debris or oating trees in these lakes, so they are less hazardous.

Maps of Kentucky lakes around the Mammoth Cave area are available at the ECC. Wahl noted that only canoes are allowed on Carlson Lake and trolling motors

and motors only at idle speed are allowed on Upper and Lower Douglas Lakes located on Fort Knox.

    Boat reservations are recommended e s p e c i a l l y f o r holiday weekends. A reservation can be made up to 30 days in advance, however, if boats a r e a v a i l a b l e , r e s e r v a t i o n s are not needed. Reservations can be made over the phone with a credit

card. One daily rate will be charged to the credit card as a deposit and the balance is due at the time of pick up.

For those who own their own boat, the ECC oers repair and winterization services by a certied marine mechanic by appointment. In addition, boat storage is available on Fort Knox through the ECC.

To register for the Boater Safety course or for more rental, mechanic and storage information, call the ECC at (502) 624-2314.

Barr Librarys "Authors at Your Library" series continues in July with the appearance of Bill Noel, Executive Vice President of the Sullivan University System and author of the Folly Beach Mystery series. He will discuss his newest release, Ghosts: A Folly Beach Mystery, Thursday, July 19, at 6:30 PM.

Noels debut novel, Folly, introduced his protagonist, Chris Landrum, who found his extended vacation on the small island of Folly Beach, South Carolina, interrupted by a murder. Hoping for a peaceful retirement, the Folly Beach Mystery series nds the character entwined in a series of crimes that he ultimately solves. Lauded for the accuracy of the locations depicted and his quirky, yet believable island residents, Noels series now includes ve books.

Ghosts nds Chris's life again in turmoil when his ex-wife Joan reenters his life. After a call that began as a Christmas goodwill wish, Chris learns that Joans husband is dead, the apparent victim of an automobile accident in Tennessees Smoky Mountains. When Joan asks Chris to investigate, he comes to suspect that his death was no accident, but the result of foul play. With a colorful cast of characters, including Charles, a bartending private detective, and Heather, Charless psychic girlfriend, Chris nds that this latest mystery is anything but a day at the beach.

Noels program will include a presentation by the author, question and answer session, and book signing. A limited number of books will be available for purchase the evening of the event at the Library. For more information, please contact Barr Library at (502) 624-1232.
