“We are here for you”, a sincere statement conveyed by Rayceil Oggs, Chief, Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS), to deployed or soon to be deployed Soldiers and their families. “Addressing the needs of these special families we would like to introduce them to and make them aware of many CYSS support programs that are available to them. We also want them to know that we are truly committed to improving family readiness by offering and delivering excellent products in childcare services,” said Oggs.

Support Programs – Deployment Benefits depending on Mission Level include:

Free hourly or Kids On Site (KOS) care during mandatory deployment meetings Free hourly or KOS care for Family Readiness meetings Sixteen hours or five hours of FREE Respite Care per child per, month depending on mission level Hourly care fee $2.00 per child, per hour rate for any hourly care beyond the FREE Respite Care hours Fees reduced by 20 percent for regularly scheduled Full and Part Day care Up to $300 credit for SKIES Classes per child Up to $100 credit for CYSS Team or Individual Sports per child

Families of fallen or wounded warriors are also eligible for FREE and reduced CYSS programs and services and FREE Group Childcare while attending Memorial Services. Additional Extended Childcare programs include: Daily Hourly Care at the Child Development School Age Centers; Hourly and Extended Care in Family Childcare Homes; Weekly and Monthly Evening Childcare, and Monthly Saturday Childcare.

A FREE monthly CYSS Playgroup is held at Devers Middle School and Teen Center, that encourages parent/child interactions through unstructured activities for children up to 5 years of age. The play group provides parents the opportunity to enjoy activities with their children and meeting other parents and children.

For February and March 2011, CYSS has plans underway to give children, primarily those whose parents are deployed, the opportunity to spend a FREE weekend at Tim Horton Camp, “Kentahten” at Green River Lake, near Campbellsville, Kentucky, where according to the Foundation,” children discover their best”. All children from Fort Knox schools and surrounding area schools, age11 through high school age will be given the chance to attend a weekend camp.

The Community has partnered with Tim Horton Children’s Foundation and their camp programs which provide children the opportunity to experience many positive personal achievements while at camp. Children will return home with new found strengths and the courage to achieve the goals they set for themselves.

Resilience Training for Family Members and Civilians

is designed to promote six core competencies —

Self Awareness, Self Regulation, Optimism, Mental

Agility, Strength of Character, and Connection.

The training utilizes a structured assessment and

development program to build the resilience and

enhance the performance of every Soldier, Family

member and DA civilian.

Resilience Training develops skills related to critical

thinking and knowledge for the purpose of overcoming

challenges, bouncing back from adversity, and

recognizing all the benefits from positive events. It

teaches participants awareness in the shadow of a

challenge and that challenges are temporary, local,

and can be changed by effort—in essence you have

more control than you think.

The skills of Resilience are truly life changing and

inspire the individual to shut down counterproductive

thoughts and thinking patterns, communicate

assertively and constructively, and identify

idiosyncrasies that inhibit resilience and growth.

The goal of Army Community Service’s Master Resilience

Trainers (MRT) is to extend the benefits of this training

— FREE OF CHARGE — to Civilians and Family

members of the Fort Knox Community ages 16 and

up. Those interested in becoming participants should

come prepared to commit their time and energy to the

training. They will be richly rewarded for their efforts.

It’s 6:00 PM on a cold and dark Thursday evening, exactly one week before D-Day. The mood is calm, but apprehensiveness and anxiety screams loudly throughout the house. She leans against the doorway in her kitchen trying to mask the sadness written all over her face and watches her children observe their daddy as he attempts to shove the last pair of combat boots into his over-stuffed ruck.

Her oldest son stands up to help him, and she grins to herself at the candid moment her husband and son share together. They both were determined to make it fit. She adjusts her posture to hide back any tears because deep down she knows that deployment is approaching rapidly, and there is nothing she can do about it except show her support and be the strong wife she promised to be for her family.

Lisa has been dreading the day she would have to say goodbye to Josh for a year. In a few days, Josh will be “in-country”, engaging in enemy lines along the rigorous mountaintops of Afghanistan. Like many Soldiers sent off to war, Josh is prepared to tackle the deployment with full-force.

“My thoughts have been all over the place,” said Lisa. “I am trying to keep a positive, open mind about everything, but the feeling that tends to be the strongest for me now is the nervousness and anxiety over Josh’s safety.”

Six months ago, Lisa had her head in the sand. She knew the deployment was lurking, but didn’t want to think about it. Maybe, just maybe, if she ignored it, the man she loves so deeply wouldn’t have to leave.

Lisa Kinsel has been married to her husband, Josh Kinsel for 3 1/2 years. They have two beautiful boys, Caellum, 9 months, and Tyson, 2 years old. Like many families in the Army, this is the first time their family will experience a deployment.

Wishful thinking seemed to have helped her during the pre-deployment, stage, but now it’s all becoming too real.

Preparing for deployment, especially for a first timer, is emotionally and physically draining. Not only is your spouse leaving for a period of time, but it’s likely that they will be in harm’s way. Just a touch of uncertainty and a semblance of fear during a time of war is enough to make a person’s stomach turn.

“Fear of the unknown is huge,” said Lisa. “I know I’m going to constantly worry.”

Is he going to be safe? What mission is he running today? Am I going to get that dreaded phone call that he is injured, or God forbid, something worse? These are the thoughts that consume Lisa’s thoughts daily. It’s only natural to think of the worse that could happen. How does a person prepare for the worse?

“Knowing that Josh has the Lord by his side is what will get me through that constant worry,” said Lisa.

The Kinsel’s used to be the family that empathized with other Soldiers and Families dealing with deployment. Now, their time has come. The thought of saying goodbye and having their two boys grow up without their daddy for an entire year is a heartbreaking thought.

“The kids are too young to even understand the concept of their daddy leaving, and don’t realize how long he will be gone,” she said.

Deployment has become a fact of life for many Military spouses and their children. For some, it has become second nature. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro at these year-long separations, there’s always one thing that every Family member shares in common, and that is; deployments are never easy.

Military families are often challenged every day with responsibilities such as; bills, meal planning, yard work, laundry, house cleaning, and maintenance, while their spouse is deployed. How does one go from being a duel parent to a single parent? Why is it that the entertainment system my husband so cleverly put together, all of a sudden wants to stop working, and the entire house feels like it’s going to shambles? Why now? Why me?

In addition to those challenges, they develop the worrywart syndrome, losing sleep over the whereabouts, daily activities and safety of their Soldier overseas. That is why it is vital to have a battle buddy close by. Grab hold of that battle buddy and hang on to them tightly, because that person will hold your hand through the most difficult, stressful and fearful moments of the deployment.

“We are so blessed to have such a wonderful support system in our friends and families. I know the boys and I will be fine,” said Lisa. “My number one battle buddy is the Lord, and through him, all things are possible.”

It’s late now, and the boys are all in bed. Kinsel takes one last look at them before she calls it a night. In exactly one week, she’ll be without her better half for an entire year. She switches off all the lights in the house and gets ready for bed. D-Day is coming and soon it will be just her and the boys, holding it down on the home-front until their Soldier returns home safe and sound.

BENEFITS BARRAGE: Army Family Strong Festival

he Army Family Strong Festival was held on October 16, 2010 at Natcher

Physical Fitness Center. Over two thousand Soldiers and Family Members

participated in FREE games and activities including carnival rides. There was also

plenty of FREE food for everyone. Participants reported by an average of 4.7 out of

5 that they experienced a decrease in their level of stress and 4.65 out of 5 that they

experienced an increase in their sense of Family unity.
