POLLING THE POSTWhat is your New Years’s resolution?

The tradition of using a baby to signify the New

Year was started by ancient Greeks around 600

B.C. They would carry a baby around in a basket to

honor Dionysus, the God of Fertility, and symbolize

his annual rebirth.

1. “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow connes of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

2. “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.”

3. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

4. “We will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

5. “We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.”

6. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

7. “Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.”

8. “Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man’s sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true.”

9. “Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the diculties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’”

10. “A man who won’t die for something is not t to live.”

ood nutrition contributes to a young child’s well-being and health. Children must have food to grow and to have a healthy body. We want to ensure that the foods our children eat help

promote the growth and the energy that they need. It is a basic need that we all require. As adults, we must set an example and have the knowledge of good nutrition. Children need to be aware that we need to eat a variety of foods each day. We do not get the nutrition we need from just one food.

Eating is an activity that is enjoyed by everyone. It can stimulate a person’s senses, creativity, emotions ,and learning experiences. Parents and teachers can encourage children to establish healthy eating habits and a positive attitude toward meals, which can become acceptable to young children. Mealtime settings should be in a pleasant atmosphere, which can attribute to the child’s social and emotional experiences.

Here are some ideas that can help:

Food Pyramid: Even with young children you can introduce the Food Pyramid, and work on activities to get them interested as to why we eat healthy food. (MyPyramid.gov - United States Department of Agriculture - For Kids)

Plant a Garden: Whether it is indoors or outdoors, have the children participate in planting a garden. They can plant some vegetables and see how they grow. You can also use clear see-through plastic containers for a window garden, so they can view how some vegetable grows underground. Assign some children to take care of the garden (water the plants, pull weeds, etc.) When the vegetables are ready for picking, let the children sample them, or use the vegetables in a cooking project. Let the children know too, that some vegetables grow above ground, some grow below ground. Our fruits grow on trees and bushes, and some grow above ground.

Food Collage: Let the children cut out pictures from magazines of what they like to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Glue the pictures to a poster board. Then have the children cut out pictures of nutritious foods they should eat for those meals and glue them on another poster board. Have them compare the two poster boards and talk about the decisions that they made.

Reading Labels: Bring in various empty food boxes and cans (cereal boxes, frozen food boxes, cookie boxes, soup cans, pasta cans, milk and yogurt containers, soda bottles, etc.). With the children, read the labels to see what ingredients are in that boxed food or canned food item. Let them decide what foods are good and not so good, and why.

G

MakingNutrition aPositive LearningExperience forYoung Children

www.KnoxMWR.com

Expand Their Senses: Bring out foods with dierent colors, tastes (sweet, sour, salty), smells, shapes (round, cubed, stringed), texture (soft, hard); temperatures (hot, cold). Let the children sample each of the foods. Make a chart and have the children compare the dierent foods that appeal to them and ask them why they chose those foods.

Plan a Menu: Using the Food Pyramid, have the children come up with a menu for a simple meal of their choice. Let them go through some children’s cookbooks and write down what they will need and how much they will need to prepare this meal.

Extended Activity: Take the children on a tour to the grocery store so they can see how the many foods are displayed, and why they are placed in refrigerated coolers, freezers, shelves, cases, etc. Let them help gather the foods they will need to prepare their meal.

Cooking Activities: Get the children involved in healthy cooking activities. Children need to learn that before they do any cooking activity, foods must be handled carefully. They need to learn the proper technique of hand washing. If food is not properly handled, it can make them sick.

Let the children read the cookbook, measure, pour, mix, stir, knead, spread or roll out, etc. Some of the older children can use small kitchen appliances (toaster over, blender, microwave — with adult supervision). They also learn science concepts such as ounces, teaspoons, cups, counting, and time, as well as heating, chilling, mixing, cooking, liquids, and solids. They learn the name of foods name of the utensils. The children also learn what goes into the meal they are preparing, and they will feel better about eating what they prepared.

Children need to know that there are some foods that have to be cooked before they are eaten — and that some foods have to be hot and some have to be eaten cold. They need to learn that there is a proper way to clean up and store leftover foods.

Creating a Relaxed Atmosphere: Have the children gather around the table, make sure there is a place for everyone. When it comes to eating your meal,

have the children pass around the food dishes and serve themselves. This is a time where parents and teachers can reenforce table etiquette and model appropriate behavior at the table. The atmosphere should be relaxed, where pleasant conversation can take place, or play some soft, soothing music in the background.

With these activities, the children also learn to work as part of a team in large or small groups. They learn and accept the cultural dierences through food activities and ethnic foods. They will learn where many foods come from and the meaning of foods in dierent cultures. Children learn positive self-concepts when they master a skill for themselves.

HOLIDAY HANGOVERDuring the holidays, many people rush to their mailboxes, searching for cards and gifts. Then credit card statements, which fueled the holiday spending, are preparing to arrive and the enthusiasm has faded into worries. Many Americans could be facing a balance of more than $10,000 on their credit card bills. A survey around Thanksgiving found that three out of four American consumers plan to pay their holiday debt o in three months, but another survey found a third of consumers were still paying o holiday debt from 2006. That’s why credit counselors typically see about 40 percent more customers in January than any other month. Credit counselors are like personal trainers. Some people need the motivation and they help instill discipline. There’s no shame there. It’s better to ask for help than to just get fatter with debt.

HOLIDAY HANGOVER

Attack the Debt Quickly: Leaving the bills unopened in a pile won’t make the debt go away. Get ahead of the game. The goal is to pay down that holiday debt by March. One way to do that is to not add to the problem. Use cash or your debit card and stop adding to the pile of debt. Put those credit cards in a lockbox or cut them up.

Pay Something, Anything on the Bill: You can’t blow o your bills. If you do, you’ll incur late fees, which often run into the $40 range. Then there’s the nance charge, a meter that keeps ticking every day you delay making your payment. So pay at least the minimum each month on each card.

Position Yourself for Next Year: Set aside $25 to $100 each month through an automatic transfer to savings earmarked as a holiday fund so that you don’t get yourself in this predicament next year. Keep a spending diary with a list of where your money goes for a month. When you sit down to pay your bills, you’ll see where all your money disappears to. It’s a big wake-up call.

Through smart planning and consistent self-control you will nd that you and your family can survive these tough economic times. One of the most important things to remember is that no matter what, you can overcome nancial hardships. Being smart about your nances is key to healthy mental health. The stress and pressure of being behind or upside-down in debt can place a huge burden on you and the people around you.

Fort Knox Army Community Service has several programs that will help you and your family reach nancial freedom through goal-oriented planning, proper budgeting, and spending. For more information about Fort Knox Army Community Service, please call (502) 624-6291 or (502) 624-8391.
