While 2013 did present its challenges for St. John’s Circle of Care, I believe that when we look back

on this past year, it will be remembered as a year of transition and innovation. When I think of the

year 2013 as one of transition, we are seeing a dramatic change in the types of people we care for,

specifically at St. John Lutheran Home. More people were admitted during this past year than any other year

prior, but St. Johns had its lowest ever occupancy percentage. The other services and

housing options we provide throughout our campus, such as The Maples, allow people to

delay the need for nursing home care, but when that need does arise, it is typically either for

a short term stay to receive physical therapy, dementia care, or for end of life care.

This transition has lead us to innovate better ways to care for the people we serve. First,

and thanks your generous support, last spring we installed a state of the art nurse call

system, which has greatly increased efficiencies and communications with our nursing team

in caring for the residents. Second, To better care for people in the end stages of their lives,

we received a grant through the Allina Medical System to create a 3rd Hospice Suite which

will provide additional comforts to those in need and their families during that person’s last

days. We are also working with an architect to create a “Transitional Care

Unit” where people coming in for a short term stay needing Physical,

Occupational, or Speech Therapy can come and focus on their rehabilitation,

and not have to worry about bringing in furniture, hooking up a phone, etc., in

their room. In addition, we are working on other, not so visible things, such as

boosting WiFi strengths for our residents and tenants and transitioning to an

electronic medical record system versus the paper charts we currently use.

As we move into 2014 and beyond we will be continuing to look at ways to

better meet the ever changing needs to those we serve. While taking care of the

most vulnerable in our society can be challenging, it is also very rewarding, and

we strive each and every day to keep St. John’s Circle of Care a place we can

all be proud of.

Leading the Way inIntergenerational Care

SSt. John’s Circle of Care is a leader in Intergenerational Care and has always been on the cutting edge of new programsand development opportunities that help children grow intellectually, physically, emotionally and spirtually into well-rounded members of our community.

What does intergenerational care look like? Each day children in our care interact with the residents of St. John’s Circle ofCare. Routine activities include reading stories, singing songs, creating crafts, and eating together. Special events likebuilding bird houses, indoor beach parties, tea parties, Mexican fiestas, and the annual Christmas program bring extra joy toresidents and children alike.

As part of the St. John’s mission to offer exceptional care, St. John’s Grandkids is currently in the process of becoming ratedby the Parent Aware Star Rating Program. Parent Aware is a tool that helps parents find programs that go above and beyondto prepare children for school and life. The one- to four-star ratings system – a free service – measures best practicesidentified by research that help children succeed.

Participating programs have:

• Volunteered for extra, in-depth training

• Devoted themselves to strong, caring relationships with each child

• Adopted the latest approaches to keeping children’s learning on track

• Committed to daily activities and routines that help children learn

• Placed a focus on children’s health and safety.

Finding quality child care and early learning programs starts by asking questions, and the first question is simple: How doyou define quality? It includes a lot of what most people naturally look for. Safety, for instance, is an essential. Cost andconvenience are practical considerations too.Learning is every bit as vital. What and how your child will learn? Who will guide the process? Did you know that the vastmajority of brain development happens by the age of five? Being ready for kindergarten means making the most of the childcare/early learning experience as well as learning at home. Well-trained early care and education professionals teaching andtracking key milestones in learning and development are there to help.Ask questions. None are too small. None are too big. The more you learn, the more your child will learn.

Parent Aware wants all Minnesota children to be ready for kindergarten. They provide free, research-based tools andresources that help parents ask important questions and make informed choices about high quality early learningopportunities. Parent Aware began as a privately funded pilot project to address the fact that in Minnesota today nearly halfof children arrive at kindergarten underprepared. The state of Minnesota has adopted the program and will make ParentAware ratings available statewide by 2015.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services leads Parent Aware in coordination with the Minnesota Office of EarlyLearning. Child Care Aware of Minnesota is working in local communities to share the ratings with parents and preparechild care/early education programs.

St. John’s Director Chris Stark feels that being rated by the Parent Aware Program allows Parents to feel even moreconfident in their choice of St. John’s to deliver exception care and learning opportunities to their children.

St. Johns prides itself on going above and beyond in meeting

the needs of all of the residents and tenants within our Circle of Care.

Volunteers are needed to assist in daily activities on the campus. Do you

have any extra time during your day to make a difference?

Here are a few opportunities

• Sunday Church Services• Turn pages at Sing-a-longs• Help serve at Socials• Set & comb out hair• Sort & deliver mail• Assist with bingo and help serve lunch on Friday afternoons• During Spring, Summer & Fall take residents outside to enjoy some fresh air• Spend 1-1 time with higher needs residents, especially those in Riverhaven,during later afternoons and early evenings

• Go with on outings• Entertainment for parties
