We believe service is at the heart of the Christian life. It connects us with God, our community and ourselves.

It’s a familiar Gospel story. After Jesus’ death, two of his disciples are traveling on foot together when a stranger joins them on the road. They tell him their horrific tale of how their beloved spiritual teacher, the One they thought might redeem all Israel, was brutally executed by the Roman Empire. The stranger responds by speaking powerfully about their Messiah: his teachings, scriptures that seem to describe him, his heroic and courageous death. They are deeply inspired, and when night falls, they stop at a roadside inn. Finally, when they offer to share their lodging and food with the stranger, they recognize him for who he is: the stranger is the Risen Christ himself.

That story means many things. But surely one lesson it offers is that while theological conversation can be inspiring and even life-changing, we meet the risen Christ when we share what we have in service to others – our resources, our time, our energy, our talents, our commitment. When we serve others, we encounter God.

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, preached what he called “holiness of heart and life.” It’s an archaic phrase, but its meaning has never been more important. For Wesley, Christianity was not a belief system, but a way of life. Our spiritual practice is more than study, or worship, or sitting quietly in meditation. All those things are important. But the circle is not complete until our reflection is illuminated by action.

This catalogue contains opportunities to serve. Some are small and simple, while others require larger commitments of time and energy. But whether you are holding the door or serving as an usher on Sunday mornings, meeting our youth for a breakfast group, talking with homeless teens at Urban Peak, serving meals to refugees newly arrived in our country, or participating in the many other opportunities described in this catalogue, two things will happen. First, you’ll connect more deeply here at church. You’ll find community, meet friends, and have fun. Second, somewhere along the way, you will meet the Risen Christ. He tells us so, and centuries of Christian experience tells us so. As St. Andrew himself said, “Come and see.” I look forward to your stories of service, and of how you met the Christ.

Andy Dunning

How to use this catalog to find opportunities to serve and fill out your commitment card.

The various opportunities to serve are divided by ministry area, which you can find at the top of each page. At the beginning of each section is information about that ministry, including a contact person. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. A full catalog and digital sign-up is also available online. www.gostandrew.com/serve

For each opportunity you will find a Ministry Title, description, number of volunteers needed, frequency of service, time commitment (per occasion), age level, and the 4-digit ministry code.

Once you see the right place of service for your journey, either submit a Serve Commitment Card, contact the appropriate ministry area leader, or sign up online. When signing up, the 4-digit code is the most important piece of information to ensure accuracy as we connect you to the ministry where you feel called to serve. Commitment Cards can be submitted by Consecration Sunday in the fall, or brought to the front office throughout the year.

Time commitments are per occasion. In this example, you would serve one week per

quarter for four hours.

Each opportunity has a unique "Ministry Code" to help with accuracy

and efficiency.

If you can't find the code for a ministry you serve in, simply write it here.

To continue serving as you have in the past,

check this box

Ministry Titles often contain subtitles.

In this example, you would write Family

Promise - Morning Host

YOUTH MINISTRY ADULT OPPORTUNITIES

Cindy Klick | [email protected]

We strive to provide a caring church home and family, built on friendly acceptance and positive energy, where

youth can learn, grow, serve and reach out to others with faith, passion, kindness and generosity.

This can be best achieved by providing a structure of caring, competent adults who model their faith in relational settings.

Opportunities in this section are for adults 18 & older. See page 39 for youth opportunities

Music is one of the many ways we gather for worship together on Sundays and throughout the week. Whether you’re a child, youth

or adult, join us in making a joyful noise! With nineteen musical ensembles and choirs, you are sure to

find a place to plug in and connect with our musical family.

CHOIRSAdult Choir (Charles Wesley Choir)

This adult choir provides music for worship services and special concerts and is made up of people who can carry a tune and have some choral experience. Some choir members can read music a little, some can read music well and a few even have degrees in music.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where can I find out about the Opportunities to Serve? A. This catalog has information about all of our currently available opportunities OR visit www.GOstandrew.com/SERVE to search based on your interests.

Q. How do I fill in my Serve Commitment Card? A. Head to page ii in the introduction for complete instructions.

Q. Why don't I see the ministry I serve in listed? A. The catalog only contains the opportunities that are currently available, not ministries that are already filled. Please reach out to us if you have questions.

Q. Do I have to use the Ministry Codes? A. While we hope that everyone will use the codes to help us be accurate and efficient, we understand that this new process can feel a bit overwhelming. If you don't know the code for your ministry, simply ask a Messenger or just write in the name of your ministry to the best of your ability on the blank lines.

Q. Who are the Messengers? A. Laity leaders who help provide information and connect people to Opportunities to Serve and the new Serve Commitment Cards. Look for the red ribbons on name tags.

Q. What is servant leadership? A. We understand Jesus to be a servant leader, modeling what he taught in prayer, humility, inclusivity, and spiritually-grounded service. We are called to love God and our neighbors by following his example with our commitment to service.

Q. How do I choose an area to serve in if I have never served at St. Andrew before? Where do I get started? A. Each ministry has a selection of small, medium and larger "bites” of service so everyone can fulfill a role in ministry at St. Andrew. If you are having trouble finding the right fit, ask a Messenger who will be glad to walk you through the process.

Q. Who do I contact with questions? A. Visit www.GOstandrew/SERVE for more info, or email us - [email protected]
