Last Thursday our PYP children had a wonderful time at KIDZENIA and you will see more details and photographs in our next newsletter. Last Thursday we also had a special guest speaker to share her knowledge on a science project, “Vertical Farming”. Yes Mahek Vora, a sixth standard student of Balmohan Vidya Mandir, Dadar expressed her ideas so confidently, our MYP students couldn‟t help admiring her. Now we are all gearing up for our next event “Indian Music and Dance Concert” scheduled on 8th February. Dr. Arundhati Hoskeri Management Representative KUDOS Varun Badrinarayan, Gr 6 A recently appeared for National Science Olympiad & International Math Olympiad and won the following prizes! National Science Olympiad State Result - 567 International Result - 891 He won a Bronze Medal for this. International Math Olympiad State Rank - 277 International Rank - 591 He bagged a Gold Medal for this feat! Also, he has qualified for the 2nd Level for the IMO to be held in February 2014! W e had our National flag hoisted on 26th January, early in

the morning on the occasion of republic day but since it

was on Sunday children were not called in.

Last Thursday our PYP children had a wonderful time at

KIDZENIA and you will see more details and photographs in our

next newsletter.

Last Thursday we also had a special guest speaker to share her knowledge on a

science project, “Vertical Farming”. Yes Mahek Vora, a sixth standard student of

FEELING PROUD!

O n the 24 January 2014, we had our Personal Project

Exhibition and Presentation. Each one of us from Grade

10 had displayed and explained our projects very well.

As my personal project I had made a personalized home decor

magazine using my paintings and digitally displaying them on

different applicable surfaces. For the exhibition, I brought all

my paintings to school and displayed them. Many people

appreciated my work and were very happy with what I had

done!

It was an amazing experience when we got the feedback from

parents and guests!

THE IGCSE ORIENTATION

A s they always say that at some point

of time, a person has to pull up their

socks; we know that the Grade 8

will soon be in IGCSE and need to work

harder! As students in the IGCSE, they have

so many subjects to concentrate upon and so

many tasks to complete! They usually get

confused about which is the field they need

to get into and which are the right subjects

to opt for. Therefore, it is not only

important for the students to focus upon

their careers, but also their parents must be able to guide their wards. Last

week, the school organized an orientation session to make it easier for the parents as well as the

students of Grade 8 understand the IGCSE curriculum and how to choose subjects! The best part

of this orientation was that both the students and we parents were supposed to understand from

this presentation so that we are clear in what we want ! We were pretty relaxed after the

orientation because the pattern of IGCSE had been simplified and explained well. Also there

were so many options and we realized that our wards are guided for the right path of careers!

CELL MODEL PROJECT BY GRADE 6

F irst I got a thought. I told myself let me do a nerve cell. After that Ii went on the net saw

some nerve cell projects I saw one which was very interesting but with no labels then I got an

idea I will make a nerve cell but with the labels inside. Then my dad bought the materials - a

round Styrofoam, clay, a cap of a bottle, sketch pens and a Styrofoam sheet. I made it by cutting the

round Styrofoam and carving another small piece of Styrofoam inside then I took a rod and put blue

clay an on top of that I put yellow clay but there were spaces. Then I placed some blue clay on the

surface of the Styrofoam and inside it I put the parts and I fixed pins on the outside. After that I

made a hole at the back and connected the rod. In the end, I stuck the Styrofoam ball on the cap

and the rod was connected to it and the cap was lying on a Styrofoam sheet.

One of the most important chapters of science was cells. We finished studying it and Ms. Swati

discussed with us about our personal project presentation. She told us about making a cell model

which should be 3D. She gave us some notes about how to make it and all of that. The project

deadline given by Ms. Swati was 17 January 2014. I started to research on the internet for pictures

and ideas for the model. I finally found a very good picture of the cell and started to collect

materials for the project. When I finished collecting them, I started my project. It nearly took me

around 4 hours to finish my model. We had labeled all the parts of the cell too. Then it was just to

submit it. I was very scared about the comments and grades by the teacher and my friends. When I

reached school I gave it to Ms. Swati. Then Ms. Swati took my project and told me to sit near it so

she could take a picture. But when my friends saw it and appreciated it, it encouraged me. I got

better comments than I thought I would. I am very happy about my project because my hard work

gave a good fruit. I thank Ms. Swati and my friends who had encouraged me. I wish Ms. Swati

gives a similar type of task next time which should be more challenging!

I had made a 3D model of a plant cell as my homework assignment. In the beginning I collected ideas

from the internet. I couldn't find such good models to make so then I started off with some of my own

ideas. I used all different materials like some thermocol, pea pods, raw beans, beads, clay and a sponge.

At first I thought that it was a very difficult task to do but as I went on making the cell I got the hang of

it. I chose to make a plant cell as mostly all of my classmates were doing an animal cell and I wanted to

do something unique. Overall this was a fun, creative and knowledgeable and a very helpful project.

I was in a cheery mood on 03 January2014, when Ms. Swati told us that we had to make a cell model

and submit 2 weeks later. I was very excited on this topic. I started raking my brains on deciding what

cell to do- plant, or animal? I chose animal and I started my research. There were many interesting ways

to make it, and I finally decided to do it in a Styrofoam ball way, but instead of the Styrofoam, I would

be using 2 baskets. My mother and I stuck the baskets together, and then stuffed them with newspaper

chunks. I then put a layer of Styrofoam on the 1st basket, and half on the 2nd. I stuck sheets of A4 paper

on the 2 baskets. I painted the Styrofoam green in color. The next thing was to make the organelles. I

made all of them with clay, with the exclusion of the cell membrane, the lysosomes, the ribosomes and

the centrioles. I stuck all of them on the cytoplasm (the green paint, now dried up) and arranged them

neatly. To add the final touches, I labeled them with their names and their functions. When I showed to

Ms. Swati, she immediately appreciated me for putting in so much of hard work. From this task, I have

learnt to be a risk taker, well-balanced, an inquirer, to manage my time and to be cooperative.

When I got this project I was very excited and confused. This was a really interesting project that helped

me learn about the nuances of composition of living organisms. Since I had never done a project like this

in my old school I went on various websites to know on how to make a cell but none of the websites

really helped me as all the material, the model needed was not available in India. This made my project

more difficult. Then I started to research about the various cells and their functions. I even used many

books to help me out with my project. After looking out on many books I finally came across my science

checkpoint text book. I saw a palisade cell and thought that this would be perfect and a simple project

that could be worked with ease. Then I started to think about the various ways of making the cell. I saw a

chocolate box at home. I thought that I could use the box as the model base. First I took the chocolate

box and filled it with cotton. Next I gave it a base with cardboard on the top to place the parts of the cell

like vacuole, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplast etc. The cardboard was painted yellow so that cytoplasm

could be prepared. Leaves were used to make chloroplast due to its green color. I took bubble wrap,

stuck it on a paper and cut in a rectangular shape the make the vacuole. I made the Nucleus by cutting a

round shaped black chart paper and placing it. The exterior was covered with a black chart paper to

represent it as a cell wall and a boundary was created with the same paper for the cell membrane

I chose the plant cell. This is how I built my plant cell. I used Styrofoam and then put a green sheet of

card glued. The green sheet of paper is the cell wall. On top of the green sheet of card I put a pink

colored sheet of chart paper which would be the cytoplasm. Then I filled green balloons with newspaper

with green beads acting like chlorophyll I used red, blue and yellow to make the nucleus. Which had the

nuclear membrane which was red and the yellow was the nucleolus. Next, I used green papers for rough

E.R. I put ribosomes to differentiate and placed it near the nucleus then I made ribosomes which are the

white dots. After making the ribosomes I made the Golgi complex using pipe cleaner. For making the

vacuole I used jelly which I put in a plastic cover. For the mitochondria I used cut up pipe cleaner and

orange clay which I flattened. I enjoyed working on this project and would like to do some more projects

once again.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF GREEN INNOVATIONS?

T he students of Grades 6 and 7 were ushered to the MYP library

today to watch a student Mahek Vora, of the 6th grade from a

different school share the ideas and information that she had about

the world and how we can help it. After we all were hushed into a pin

drop silence, she began. First with the topic: green innovations. Then,

with the problems that she thought the world had. She seemed to think

over population was the main reason of global warming and she

showed a couple of slides on that. Later, she showed some truly

creative pictures of the pockets that hang on the wall or the grills on

the balcony filled with lightweight soil and she grew plants in them. I

think I too need to try that. So, she showed the pros of having these wall

hanging planters and I have got to say, I truly like the idea. Thank you dear friend!

THE SUPERMOON ON 30TH JANUARY

I t‟s the end of the first month in 2014 already, I think it‟s safe to use the statement “time flies”

and not sound like a cliché. This year holds new opportunities and surprises at every turn.

One of the incredible things happening this year is the two super moons in January. The first

marked the beginning of the New Year – it was on the 1st of January and the next one is now,

the 30th, making January 2014 the only month with two super moons until January 2018 „What is

a super moon?’ you ask? Well basically a super moon is when the moon makes its closest

approach to Earth in its orbit than usual, which is seen clearly when there's full moon. This isn‟t

just some astronomical phenomena, to the common man like us, I guess you could say seeing

two super moons in a year is a glorious opportunity and obviously the fact that it looks

extremely beautiful. So on the eve of 31st January, keep your eyes open for this giant

Magnificence.

SCHOOL AND TALENT; A GOOD BLEND

I ‟m Vikram Bam. I‟m a student of the IBDP program at RBK International Academy. Our

school recently took part in an interschool event at SVKM International School. I took part in

the music event among many others. It was in this event, in the solo category that I was

crowned the winner. The competition was pretty fierce and to be honest, I really didn‟t expect to

win. But when the curtain came down, and it was time for the judges to decide who they thought

was first among equals, they saw something in my performance that probably stood out more

than the others. I really should say that I couldn‟t have won if it wasn‟t for the full support of my

school. The school gave me all the practice time that I required to give a good performance. Our

music teacher helped out a lot. Not only did he help me in preparing my piece, but he gave me

some invaluable training in performing that I will always remember wherever I may perform.

Overall, it‟s a wonderful feeling to win something, but even better when you know that your

school has backed you 100 %. It is pretty awesome.
