Townsville Enterprise chairman calls on Harper to support NQ

When Mr Harper stood up in Queensland parliament on Tuesday and berated his local newspaper and peak economic development organisation Townsville Enterprise he did precisely the opposite of his job.

This publication and Townsville Enterprise have asked him to sign a pledge saying he supported mining in the Galilee Basin. He refused and instead spat the dummy accusing us all of being biased towards the LNP.

The truth is, this is nothing about the left or the right of politics. It's about who is willing to stand by our side and fight for North Queensland.

Mr Harper could have used his platform in Brisbane for the betterment of his community but instead he used it to defend himself.

It's not the first time Mr Harper has used his position in parliament to belittle public sentiment in Townsville.

Mr Harper vowed to be more responsive to the needs of the community.

His performance this week proves he has learned absolutely nothing from that debacle.

Yet every day we are bombarded with letters, texts and comments from readers furious at Mr Harper attacking two Townsville organisations that are actually stepping up for the city.

Mr Harper and his mute colleagues, Member for Townsville Scott Stewart and Member for Mundingburra Coralee O'Rourke, said in a press release that they support jobs for North Queensland.

All evidence suggests the only jobs they care about are their own.
