1.2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The BDXII Abatement Air Sampler con-sists of a pump contained in a Lexan plas-tic case, electronic flow control system, apneumatic system, and a rechargeablebattery pack. The BDXII is shown in Fig-ure 1.1 and Figure 1.2.
The BDXII sampler is equipped with abasic control board, which contains theflow control circuitry. The board also con-tains the On/Off switch, and the flowcontrol potentiometer.
The pump will normally maintain set flowwithin ± 5%, with no more than two (2)readjustments needed over an 8-hour pe-riod. However, heavy filter media loadingmay make more frequent readjustmentsnecessary.
The internal/external vent control is lo-cated on the top of the sampling pump. You may select the venting control as de-sired, using the screwdriver provided withthe pump. Selecting the open circle posi-tion will vent the pump’s discharge exter-nal to the sampler’s case (recommendedfor moist or corrosive sampling environ-ments). Selecting the closed circle willvent the pump’s discharge internally (rec-ommended for dust laden environments).

2.1 INTRODUCTION
Before using the BDXII for sampling, theunit must be properly prepared. This in-cludes charging and calibrating the unitfor proper flow rate.
When charging the unit make certain thatthe unit is fully charged. This provides theunit with enough charge to complete afull period of sampling. Follow the gen-eral instruction provided in Section Three,as well as the specific instructions pro-vided with the particular charging deviceused.
CAUTION
When charging the device, make certain theAC outlet is nearby and readily accessible.
The BDXII should be calibrated beforeand after each day of sampling. Calibra-tion should be performed using either anelectronic bubble meter (e.g., Gilibrator-2), or a precision rotameter that has beencalibrated against an electronic bubblemeter.
When a sampling train requires the use ofan unusual combination of sampling me-dia (such as a glass fiber filter precedingan impinger), these sampling mediashould be installed in-line during calibra-tion.
2.2 CALIBRATION (FLOW ADJUST)
To ensure proper operation of the BDXIIAbatement Air Sampling Pump, the unitshould be properly calibrated prior tosampling.
The calibration (flow adjust) is recom-mended using a Gilibrator-2 precisionelectronic flowmeter. If you use a preci-sion bubble meter other than the Gilibra-tor-2, make certain you follow the instruc-tions that came with your device.
Refer to Figure 2.1 and calibrate thepump as follows:
1) Make certain the unit is properlycharged.
2) Using a small Phillips screwdriver, back out the holding screw justenough so the anti tamper coverplate can be rotated 180°. This ex-poses the On/Off switch and the flowadjust screw (See Figure 1.1).
3) Assemble the cassette filter holder forthe sampling media. Use the appro-priate filter for the sampling method.Compress the cassette by using a me-chanical press or other means of ap-plying pressure. Use shrink tapearound the cassette to cover jointsand prevent leakage. If a cassetteadapter is used, make certain it doesnot come in contact with the backuppad.

2.3 OPERATION
Begin the sample run by switching theOn/Off switch to the On position. Securethe front anti-tamper cover. The pumpwill operate at the flow rate set at the lastcalibration (flow adjustment). The sam-pling run is terminated by moving theOn/Off switch to the Off position.
NOTE
It may be necessary to readjust the flow rate atleast 2 times during the sampling period inorder to maintain flow within ± 5% of the setflow rate.
After sampling, remove the filter cassetteand prepare the cassette filter for analysis.Replace the cassette filter with a cleanfresh filter.
Fully charge the battery pack (preferablyovernight) to ensure enough power tocomplete the entire next sampling period. The actual time to achieve a fully chargedbattery pack depends on the charging de-vice used (see Section Three).
4) Move the On/Off switch to the Onposition.
5) Set the pump flow rate by turning theflow adjust screw (clockwise for in-creased flow and counterclockwisefor decreased flow).
6) Use the built-in rotameter on theBDXII as a flow indicator only. Accu-rate flow adjustment settings must bemade by using a Gilibrator-2, orequivalent flow calibration device, forcalibration measurements.
7) When calibrating the sampler forflow, the sample collection device(cyclone, impinger, filter cassette orsorbent tube) should be in-line.
8) When the desired flow rate has beenattained, move the On/Off switch tothe Off position. The unit is nowready for sample collection.

3.1 GENERAL MAINTENANCE
The BDXII Abatement Air Sampling Pumpis relatively maintenance free. Most main-tenance involves periodic inspection ofthe unit, battery maintenance, and filtermaintenance.
General inspection involves checking theunit for blockage and pump capacity asfollows:
1) Examine the unit for physical dam-age. Make certain that all case com-ponents and connections are tight.
2) Turn on the pump and check theflowmeter.
3) If there is no flow, check all tubingfor blockage.
4) Check for gross contamination withdust, mud, etc. If contaminated or ex-cessively dirty, replace the internal fil-ter.
5) Also, check the TroubleshootingGuide (Appendix C) and make anycorrective action. If the problem stillexists, return the unit for repair (seeAppendix D for obtaining a ReturnedMaterial Authorization).
3.2 BATTERY MAINTENANCE
The Gilian BDXII Abatement Air Sampleruses rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium batter-ies. The battery packs must be fullycharged and maintained properly toachieve maximum pump run time. Thebattery pack has an output of 4.8 Vdc anda capacity of 1.8 ampere-hours. It is in-cumbent upon the pump user to ensurethat the battery pack has enough charge tocomplete the intended run time.
The BDXII battery pack is chargedthrough a built-in jack. The jack is locatedon the side of the unit, below the internalfilter assembly. Note that the chargingplug is polarized to prevent improper in-sertion.
CAUTION
Do not short the battery terminals or the charg-ing jack. Shorting will result in irreversibledamage to the battery pack.
The battery pack may be charged whileattached to the unit or charged separately.Figure 3.1 shows how to remove the bat-tery pack for battery pack replacement orfor charging the pack separately from theunit.

3.2.2 Available Battery Chargers
• Single-Unit Charger
Single unit chargers provide a constant-rate charge of 180 mA and can fullycharge a BDXII battery pack in 16 hours.
• Universal Multi-Station Charger
The Multi-Station Charger can charge upto 5 battery packs simultaneously. Thesechargers provide a timed, constant-ratecharge of 180 mA and can fully charge abattery pack in 16 hours. The unit auto-matically switches to trickle charge(45␣ mA) as each battery pack becomesfully charged.
• BMS Multi-Station Charger System
The BMS Multi-Station Charger & Diag-nostic System can charge up to 5 batterypacks simultaneously. The BMS offerstimed charging that switches to a pulsedcharge when the battery pack reaches fullcharge capacity. Batteries can be chargedin under 14 hours. The diagnostic pro-grams provide accurate test data regard-ing battery voltage under load and batterycapacity.
3.2.1 Battery Charging
• Battery Life
Battery life is usually measured in charge/discharge cycles. Gilian battery packs arecapable of providing 300–500 chargingcycles. Since this is very difficult to trackover the life of the battery, Table 3.1 willhelp you to anticipate how long the bat-tery should last. The estimated battery lifeis based on proper battery maintenance.
• Memory Effect
Nickel-Cadmium batteries will develop re-duced capacity when the user does notmaintain the practice of fully dischargingor fully charging the battery after eachuse. Memory effect takes time to developand usually can be eliminated with twodischarge/charge cycles.
• Leakage Current
Nickel-Cadmium batteries always have asmall internal leakage current. If the bat-tery pack has been removed from thecharger for more than two days withoutuse, it will require additional charging torestore it to full capacity. This process canbe repeated 2–3 times without causingsigns of memory effect.
