For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to
us, let us use them... Romans 12:4-6a
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the
common good. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7
But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift….And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:7, 11-12
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks the oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies – in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 4:10-11a
The New Testament assumes much and explains only a little when it comes to spiritual gifts. But the basic idea offered in Scripture about spiritual gifts is that God equips all those who are the church with many and varied gifts that are to be used for the good of others. Though some of these gifts, such as prophecies, tongues, and knowledge, clearly were to “pass away” (1 Corinthians 13:8), my conviction is that God continues to equip Christ’s church with varied, non-miraculous gifts so that we can take up the tasks that God presents to us.
Doug Hamilton, who preaches in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, and who is a longtime friend of the Fites, preached at North “A” one Sunday last year while I was teaching in Cambodia. His lessons were well-received, and you can hear his sermon on our church web site. Some of you bought and read Doug Hamilton’s book, Spiritual Giftedness, Empowering the Twenty-First Century Church. Our elders have invited Doug to come to Midland on the second weekend of May to lead a seminar on spiritual gifts. In anticipation of this event, I will begin a Sunday morning class in March that will lay a foundation for Doug’s work with us then. I hope that you will make plans to participate in this study.
