Generalinform

ationin the dark, you have to equip it witha lighting system. We recommend abattery powered headlamp and a batterypowered tail light. Your dealer, whereyou bought your ba , will be pleasedto help you in this regard.

The electrically assisted version ofyour ba conforms to the Europeanpedelec norm EN 15194 (averageengine power <250W, maximumassistance speed 25 km / h) and maytherefore be used like a normal bicyclewithout insurance, driving license incountries belonging to the EU (EUdirective 2002/24/EC). It may beridden on public roads according tothe traffic rules applicable to bicycles.Nevertheless please check, whetherthere are additional restrictions applyingto your specific country. Your ba

dealer will assist you in this regard

Even if it is not obligatoryto wear a helmet, wenevertheless recommend

that you always wear a helmet foryour own safety when riding yourba .

Permissible loads

Your ba is designed for the followingmaximum payloads:

maximum total weight 200kg

Payload cabin C 60kg

Payload transport box K 80kg

maximum rider weight 100kg

Payload Euro box 12kg1

tare weight from 30kg2

Please note that if permitted payloadand permitted driver weight are maxedout, the permissible total weight wouldbe exceeded. Such a loading scenario istherefore not allowed!

Exceeding the permittedpayloads can damageyour ba and cause

serious accidents. In addition to theindividual load limits, always respectthe permissible total weight!

Intended Use

ba cargo bikes are designed for useon roads or paved roads. Driving onrough terrain, driving on stairs or drivingover high curbs can cause severe damageto your ba .

In the kids version, your ba isdesigned to carry a maximum of twochildren.

Make sure that the transported childrenor loads are always properly secured.

In particular, make sure that yourchildren do not come into contact withmoving parts of your ba while riding.

B

B Before the first rideHaving received your ba , you willundoubtedly be eager to try it out. Before you go on public roads withyour ba , however, you shouldfirst become familiar with its drivingcharacteristics. On the one hand, yourba has a higher weight than acommon bicycle. On the other hand youhave to get used to sitting on a tricycle, which nevertheless tilts and thus hasthe driving dynamics of a two wheeledbicycle. Like a bike, you have to balanceyour chike in order to not roll over. Aftera few minutes you get used to the newexciting driving experience and will notwant to go back to your old bike.

If your respect the following tips andguidelines, you will enjoy using yourba and it will greatly simplify youreveryday life!

Please do not make yourfirst riding attempts onfrequented public roads in

order to avoid endangering yourselfand other road users. Do nottransport children in your ba

until you feel completely safe ridingyour ba .

Adjusting the ridingposition

The right seating position is crucial fora fatigue-free and efficient riding. Theseating position of your ba is set

up by adjusting the saddle height andhandlebar position. The saddle height isadjustable by means of a quick-releaseseat clamp. To adjust the stem, you needa suitable Allen key. For stability reasonsa quick-release adjustable stem was notan option. The various adjustments areexplained in more detail below.

Before riding your ba

, make sure that the quickrelease seat clamp and

the bolts of the stem are properlytightened! Check the tight fit of thesaddle and the handlebars!

Adjusting the saddle positionTo properly adjust the height of thesaddle, put the right pedal into its lowestposition, have a seat on the saddle andplace the right heel on the right pedal. In this position your leg should be fullystretched. To adjust the saddle height, you must first loosen the quick releaseseat clamp. Then you can move thesaddle to the desired height. Make surethat the seat post is not pulled out toofar There is a marking on the seat post, which must not be visible but disappearinside the seat tube of the frame. If thereis no marking, the seat post must be atinserted into the seat tube at least 10centimetres. After adjusting the seatheight, always check the tightness of theseat post by trying to twist the saddle. Ifit twists, the seat post clamp has to beclosed more tightly. If the seat post isdifficult to move in the seat tube whenthe quick release is open, first try to

Page 14: Operating Instructions · whether your toddler can already be transported in ba, please seek the advice of your pediatrician. Make sure that your children are appropriately dressed

6

A

B

clean the seat post and seat tube. If thisdoes not solve the problem, do not usebrute force, but contact your dealer.

The seat post must beinserted at least to themarking or 10cm into

the seat tube and the quick releaseseat clamp must be firmly closed.Otherwise, the seat post or the seattube may break.

Do not attach luggageracks or panniers to yourseat post or seat tube

as they are not designed for thispurpose and could break in extremecases.

Adjusting thehandlebar positionYour ba is equipped with an angle-adjustable stem. By changing the stemangle, the distance between the saddleand the handlebar can be adjusted (seesection Stem p.22). The factory-sethandlebar position should suit mostdrivers. Not all possible positions arepermissible: adjusting the stem too muchto the front, may cause the handlebars tocollide with the cabin.

After each adjustmentof the handlebars, pleasecheck that they have

enough clearance. Make sure thatthe handlebars can be turned to theleft and right limit positions and thatthis does not cause the shifter cablesand brake hoses to become pinched, kinked or stretched!

Learning how to ride

The riding style of ba rathercorresponds to the balanced riding of atwo-wheeled bicycle than to riding a nontilting tricycle. For your first tries, it isbest to choose an extensive area withoutany obstacles until you learned to masteryour ba safely.

Starting to rideWhen you park your ba you lockthe tilting. This prevents ba fromtipping over to the right or left hand sideand thus corresponds in function to theside stand of a common bicycle. Likewise, the parking brake of the front wheels isactivated. This will prevent ba fromrolling off on sloping terrain when parked. To start riding first release the parkingbrake (see section Brakes p.17) and thetilt lock (see section Tilt lock p.18). Makesure that the tilting is indeed released bytilting your ba a little to the left andright.

Keep in mind, that yourba can tilt sidewaysand finally fall over if

the tilt mechanism is not locked. When not riding, always try to holdyour ba in an upright, balancedposition. Otherwise higher forcesmay be required to restore itsupright position, especially whenloaded.

To start riding, put one pedal in forwardposition and place the correspondingfoot onto it. Then push off with theother foot on the ground, to gain somespeed. Finally put the second foot on thepedal and accelerate by pedaling. As witha normal two-wheeled bike you need

Page 15: Operating Instructions · whether your toddler can already be transported in ba, please seek the advice of your pediatrician. Make sure that your children are appropriately dressed

7

B

Before

thefirst

ridea certain speed to balance your ba

. The higher the speed, the easier it willbe to balance. Nevertheless, you shouldmake your first driving attempts within amoderate speed range.

StoppingKeep in mind that ba tiltssideways and therefore needs to bebalanced like a two wheeled bicycle. Tostabilize the upright position of yourba when stopping put one or bothfeet from the pedals and place themon the ground. If you stop for a longtime, it may be advantageous to blockthe tilt mechanism (see section Tilt lockp.18). To do this, your ba must bein an upright position. With the tilt lockengaged, you no longer have to activelybalance your ba . However, be sureto release the tilt lock before starting toride again.

BrakingYour ba is equipped with highquality hydraulic disc brakes. Pleasecheck the correct functioning of thebrakes before each ride. The two frontbrakes are operated simultaneouslywith the left brake lever, the rear brakeis operated with the right brake lever.Familiarize yourself with this mapping .Further information about the brakingsystem can be found in section Brakesp.17 and section Braking system p.29.

The braking power ofthe disc brakes on yourba might be much

higher than you are used to fromyour previous bicycles. Thereforeplease carefully test the brakes ofyour ba before the first ride!

Please note thatunfavourable groundconditions (wetness,

slipperiness, gravel, sand, ...) aswell as high loading can significantlyincrease the braking distance!

During the braking process, the discs and callipers heatup. Do not touch the hot

parts because this can lead to severeburns.

ParkingTo park your ba , lock the tiltmechanism (see section Tilt lock p.18)and engage the parking brake (seesection Brakes p.17). By doing this yourba can neither fall over nor rollaway. If possible, put your ba in aplace where it is protected from rainand weather. Secure your ba witha high-quality bicycle lock to achieve thegreatest possible protection against theft.

Parking D

In addition, remove the centraldisplay unit from your ba (seesection Attach and detach the cyclecomputer p.23). This prevents the useof the electric drive by unauthorizedpersons and the display unit from beingstolen.

Carrying children CYour ba is designed to carry oneor two children. In order for these to betransported safely, the following rulesmust be observed

– Always buckle up your childrenwith the supplied seat belt system(see section Buckling up of thechildren p.20).

Page 16: Operating Instructions · whether your toddler can already be transported in ba, please seek the advice of your pediatrician. Make sure that your children are appropriately dressed

8

A

B

– Make sure to load your ba

such that it is optimally balanced:if you only have one child withyou, use the middle seat, withtwo children use the right and leftseats. The necessary repositioningof the seat belt straps is quick andeasy (see section Adjusting the beltsystem p.20)

Carrying loads K

The cargo version of your ba isequipped with a load platform thatoffers various load attachment options.Take advantage of these possibilitiesand secure the transported objectsagainst slipping or falling. The shift ofthe center of gravity caused by slippingof the load can lead to critical drivingsituations. Store heavy objects as far backas possible on the transport platform. When distributing the load, make surethat your ba is balanced as well aspossible.

Riding withoutload or childrenIf you do not carry any loads withyour ba the front wheels arerelatively lightly loaded. As a result, whencornering fast, your ba tends toundersteer. In extreme cases, the frontwheels lose grip which can lead to a lossof control. In the unloaded state, drivecarefully and cautiously approach thepossible cornering speeds.

Passing curbs and stairsIf you push your ba over very highcurbs or steps, it may happen that thelower end of the steering tube hits thecurb. This should absolutely be avoidedas the steering tube is not designedfor such impacts. The more loadedyour ba , the more critical it is.

Common curbs (up to approx. 14cm)can be easily passed by your ba .However high curbs at bus and tramstops as well several steps in a row(stairs) are more critical. In the lattercase, not only the lower end of thesteering tube but also the down tubemay collide with the upper edge of thestaircase. Therefore, carefully approachthe maximum step height that can bepassed without collision. If you have topass very high obstacles, such as stairsin the hallway, it is helpful to increasethe ground clearance by lifting the rearwheel.

Never drive hands-free andalways hold the handlebarwith both hands if possible.

Otherwise even small obstacles andbumps can in extreme cases leadto a loss of controll and to seriousaccidents.

For first owner

Please observe the following measuresin order to enjoy your ba for a longtime.

Preparing the brakesTo ensure that the brand-new brakepads can take full effect, they must beinitially prepared. For this purpose, somefull emergency braking operations mustbe performed. The exact procedureis described in section Braking systemp.30. Please follow these instructions toensure that the maximum braking poweris available in any dangerous situationsright from the start.

C

C Before every rideVisual and functionalchecks

Before each ride take a short time fora visual and functional checks of yourba . This will prevent you from using itin an unsafe condition.

Many parts of your ba

are subject to heavy strainsand wear and tear. Any

kind of cracks, grooves or colorchanges in highly stressed areasindicate that the component isdamaged and should be replaced.

Brake systemAre the brake hoses not pinched orbent?

Are there no leaks on the brake hoses?

Check the brakes by pressing the brakelevers. Even at full force it should not bepossible to pull the brake levers all theway to the handlebar! With the brakelevers pulled, the rotation of the wheelsof your ba should be completelylocked! Check this by pulling your ba

forwards and backwards!

Tire pressureIs the tire pressure of the front and rearwheels sufficient?

Operating your ba attoo low tire pressure canlead to unsafe handling and

may damage the tires of your ba

.

WheelsAre the front and rear wheelstightly fixed to the frame?

Are there no cracked or loose spokes?

Are the tires undamaged and haveenough profile?

Seat postIs the seat post inserted into theseat tube at least to the mark, or at least10centimetres?

Is the quick release on the seat tubesufficiently tightened such that the saddledoes not rotate when a force is applied?

StemAre the screws which fix the angleof the stem correctly tightened?

Is the stem adjusted in a way that thereis enough clearance for your steeringmovements? Check this by turning thehandlebars to the right and left steeringlimit (see also section Stem p.22)!

Tilt lockDo all positions of the tilt-lock gripshift work properly?

Page 20: Operating Instructions · whether your toddler can already be transported in ba, please seek the advice of your pediatrician. Make sure that your children are appropriately dressed

12

A

B

C

Be sure to release thetilt lock before driving!Driving with a blocked

tilting mechanism can damage yourba and will lead to uncontrollabledriving behaviour resulting in seriousaccidents!

Screw connectionsMake sure all screws are properlytightened. Noise or unusual drivingbehaviour may indicate loose screws.

In the early stage after assembly, it ispossible that screw connections stillloosen. Your dealer will check thiswithin the first inspection and tighten thescrews to the correct tightening torquesif necessary. Afterwards the screwsshould not loosen . If this happensanyhow, please have the reason checkedby your dealer!

Loosened or insufficientlytightened screws candamage your ba and

cause serious accidents!

Frame and chassisMake sure that all frame and chassis partshave no visible damage such as cracksor bumps! If you notice any damage, letyour dealer check and repair your ba

before using it again.

Damaged componentscan suddenly fail duringyour ride and thus lead to

serious accidents!

CabinIs the fabric of the cabin undamaged?

Is the belt system properly fixed to the

cabin? Do the straps show no signs ofdamage or wear?

Loading

The correct loading is a basis for acomfortable and safe handling. On theone hand the load securing is important. On the other hand, care must be takento distribute children and loads as evenas possible, so that the ba does nottilt too much on one side.

A maximum of twochildren may be carried.Children must always be

strapped and wear a bicycle helmet. The carried children must not beolder than 7 years.

Pay attention to asymmetrical distributionof the loads. When

transporting a single child, it shouldbe strapped in the middle position.

When transporting loadsthey must be secured bystraps or the like so that

they remain in place in the case ofextreme driving situations, such as anemergency braking.

D

D After the last rideYour ba has been designed to lastfor a long time. With good care it willaccompany your life for many years tocome. Nevertheless, the time will comewhen a repair is no longer possible ordoes not make sense from an economicalor ecological point of view. Then yourba must be decommissioned andproperly disposed of, so that the rawmaterials used can be returned to theresource cycle.

BatteryD

Disused batteries must be collectedseparately in accordance with EuropeanDirective 2006/66 / EC and recycledin an environmentally sound manner.Your ba dealer will help you with theproper disposal of your battery.

Never discard the batteryof your pedelec ba intothe household waste.

To ship the battery bypost parcel is usually notallowed! If in doubt, ask

your shipping service provider!

Frame and bicyclecomponents D

According to EU Directive 2012/19 /EU, unusable electrical and electronicequipment must be recycled in anenvironmentally sound manner. Thisincludes the electronic components aswell as the drive unit of your ba .Likewise, this directive also applies tothe battery charger. In Germany, youcan pass your ba at the end of itslife span free of charge to an appropriatemunicipal collection point, where it isproperly disposed.

E

E OperationThis chapter describes in detail how tooperate and use the various parts of yourba .

Brakes

ba is equipped with high qualityhydraulic disc brakes on all three wheels. The right and left front disc brakes areoperated together with the brake leveron the left hand side of the handlebar(see fig. 1, p. 17). The front disc brakeshave a locking function. To activate

1

2

Figure 1. : Parking brake

1 : Brake lever 2 : Locking lever

the parking brake pull the brake lever1 as far as possible to the handlebars.

Then pull the locking lever 2 outwards.Check that the front wheels are actuallylocked by pushing your ba forwardand backward.

Always activate the parkingbrake when parking yourba . Otherwise, it might

unintentionally roll away on slopingground and subsequently causeaccidents and damage.

To release the parking brake, first pull thebrake lever 1 as far as possible to thehandlebar. This relieves the locking lever2 so that it can be pushed back inwards

with relatively little force.

The rear disc brake is operated with thebrake lever on the right hand side of thehandlebar.

The most powerful brakingeffect is achieved by thefront brakes. For this

reason the front brakes shouldbe use with preference! However, avoid locking up the front wheelsas this will make you loose controlover your ba and may lead toaccidents.

On very long steepdescents with high load, your brakes can overheat

due to the permanently applied highbraking power. Overheating can leadto a sudden total of the brakes. Toprevent overheating, do not let thebrakes grind permanently, but brakein intervals. Make stopovers to allowthe brakes to cool down.

Tilt lock

Your ba comes with a tilt adjustmentsystem that has three levels of tilt control. The levels can be selected using thegrip shift lever on the left side of thehandlebar (see fig. 2, p. 18). The gripshift lever has 7 or 8 indexed positions, however only three of which have afunction assigned to. The intermediatenon functional shifting positions areindicated by the symbol . This symbolmay only be shortly visible while changingthe tilt adjustment levels. Changing the

various tilt control levels is only possibleif ba is oriented perpedicular to theground (see fig. 3, p. 18). If for examplethe ground is sloping to the left hand side, please tilt your ba to the left handside as well in order to change the tiltcontrol levels.

Before changing tilt controllevels, orient your ba

perpendicular to theground. Otherwise it is impossible tochange the tilt control levels.

If you experience a high resistance whentrying to twist the grip shift lever in orderto change the tilt control level, mostprobably your ba is not properlyoriented. Do not apply brute force tothe grip shift lever, but try to find theproper orientation of your ba byslightly tilting it to the right and left, simultaneously applying a moderatetwistintg force to the grip shift lever.High actuating forces may reduce thelife time of the grip shift lever or evenlead to damage

completely free tilting. ba can betilted without any aligning torque up toits maximum tilt angle (around ± 21°).This tilt control level mostly correspondsto the riding characteristics of a commontwo wheeled bicycle.

Using this tilt control level, ba isstill able to tilt around. 21° to each side, however with increasing tilt angle you willexperience an increasing aligning torque, which pushes ba into its uprightposition. This level is especially suitedwhen transporting high loads with ba

. Some people may also find it more easyto do their first riding attempts on ba

using this level. The choice betweencompletely free tilting and tilting with

locks the tilting mechanism in theupright position. This level is intendedfor wheeling or parking your ba . It isalso helpful for longer stops, e.g. at trafficlights, as you no longer have to activelybalance out your ba when the tiltingis locked. To park your ba , switchthe tilt control level to and engage theparking brake (see section Brakes p.17)

Never ride with engagedtilting lock out (Level ).If the tilting is locked, it

is no longer possible, to safely turninto corners . More over, riding withlocked tilting mechanism may damagethe frame and suspension. Beforestarting to ride, please check, thatthe tilting is not locked by slightlytilting your ba to both sides.

Gear shift JN

Your ba is equipped with an 8-speed internally geared hub by Shimano.Changing gears is done with theRapidFire lever located on the ride handside of the handlebar.

To change to a higher gear press thelever which is facing to you with yourthumb.

To change to a lower gear pull the leverwhich is facing away from you with yourindex finger.

Gear shift D

The pedelec version of your ba isequipped with a electrically operatedDI2 8-gear internally geared hub byShimano. Shifting gears is done withthe switch at the right hand side of thehandlebar 5 , fig. 8, p. 24 and fig. 4,p. 19. There are two gear shifting modes, automatic shifting and manual shifting. Tochange between automatic and manualshifting, press the button 1 . The chosenmode is shown in the central display. In mode automatic the proper gear ischosen automatically based on variousparameters like speed and cadence. In mode manual the gears are chosenby the rider. Cabin C

The cabin of the kids version is designedand optimized to carry children. However, it is also possible to transportshopping bags or beverage crates inthe footwell In that case, appropriatelysecure the load against unintendedmovements.

Adjusting the belt systemIn order to have optimal drivingcharacteristics a balanced loaddistribution is important. Therefore, when transporting a single child, pleaseuse the central seating position. Thecabin is equipped with a five pointharness. The various straps are attachedto the cabin by quick release buckles.Use these buckles to adjust the harnessfrom the central position (one child) tothe left and right position (two children).

Buckling up of the childrenFirst you have to adapt the shoulderstraps to the height of your child. Tothis end move the upper buckles ofthe shoulder straps into a positionapproximately 3cm above the shoulderof your sitting child. Next, positionthe 3 point buckle between the legs ofyour child and attach the correspondingbuckles of the shoulder straps to it. Thentighten the shoulder straps. Finally putthe waist belt around the waist of yourchild, close the buckles and tighten thebelt.

Closing the cabin The cabin isclosed by pulling the left and right zip allthe way down. Then the lower part ofthe top is fixed to the cabin by clippingthe rubber straps over the corresponding

When transportingchildren at least the flyscreen has to be always

closed when riding in order to avoidstirred up small objects to harm yourchildren's eyes.

Load platform K

The cargo version of ba providesa platform, large enough to transportfour Euro-boxes of size 30cmx40cmor two Euro-boxes of size 30cmx40cmand one Euro-box of size 60cmx40cm,respectively. In order to securely attachyour load to the platform, it is equippedwith three Airline rails, which serve tomount various fastening elements. Aneasy to mount wall is also available, transforming the platform into a boxof size 90cm x 70cm. Finally there arefixation elements to easily place and fixSystainers onto the platform.

Load distribution andsecuring In order to have the mosteasily controllable handling it is importantto place heavy loads as centred aspossible and as far back on the platformas possible. Additionally, care has to betaken to properly fix the loads onto theplatform or inside the box. To this enduse straps fixed to the Airline rails.

Never transport childrenor adult persons on thecargo platform. It is not

intended for this purpose.

Wall To transport loose items, likeshopping bags, a wall is available, whichis easy to mount without any tools. The wall is attached to the platform byperforming the following steps:

First make sure that all four doorbolts embedded into the platformare in open position.

Then position the front and rearwall with the coarse side facinginwards into the grooves on thefront and rear side of the platform.Try to position the walls as centredas possible.

Next position the left side wallwith the rough side facing inwardsinto the respective groove on theplatform. Keep the wall slightlytilted outwards on the upper sideand pay attention that the hooksof the front and rear wall slide intothe respective recesses of the sidewall.

Push down the side wall as far aspossible and close both door boltson the left hand side.

Mounting the right side wall isdone in the same way .

Systainer mounting systemSystainers can be easily attached tothe platform with the help of someplastic fasteners. These fasteners areplugged into the respective holes onthe transport platform and prevent theSystainers from sliding on the platform.

Euroboxes for framemount

The optionally available Euroboxes ofsize 300mm x 400mm x 270mm provideadditional storage space of about 50l. Touse the boxes mounting bolts have to bemounted to the frame. The Euroboxesare then attached to your ba with aneasy to use toolless quick fix system.

Assembly In case you ordered theEuroboxes together with your ba

the mounting bolts are already installed. However, if you order the boxesafterwards, please respect the installationinstructions which are provided with theboxes.

Attaching the boxes Move theboxes sideways to the frame such thatthe recesses of the mounting rails on thebox match the mounting bolts attachedto the frame. Then slightly press the boxagainst the frame and move it forward (indirection of riding, until the locking platesnaps into place. Check that the box issecurely fixed by pushing it backwards.

Please observe, that the right and left boxare different. The locking plate alwayshas to point to the rear.

Detaching the boxes Pull thelocking plate as far as possible outwards(towards the box) and push the boxforward (in direction of riding) until itis released and can be moved away from

Operation

Loosen the angle-adjustment bolts 1two to three turns to adjust the angleof the stem. This allows to adapt thedistance between saddle and handlebarsto your needs. Finally tighten the bolts1 with a torque of 14-15 Nm.

Changing the angle of the stem ingenerally also requires to rotate thehandlebars. To this end loosen the boltsof the handlebar clamp bracket 2 androtate the handlebars to the desiredposition. Take care that the handlebarsare centered and that the clampingbracket of the stem is positioned in theclamping area of the handlebars. Thentighten the bolts 2 with a torque of 5-6Nm.

After adjusting the stem and handlebarsmake sure that the handlebars can beturned to the right and left steering limit(about 40° in each direction). To this endplace your hands on the handlebar gripsand put your fingers around the brakelevers. This way you make sure that inall steering positions, there is enoughclearance for your hands. Please alsocheck, that in all steering positions thebrake hoses, shift cables and electricwires (pedelec version) are neitherkinked nor stressed nor clamped.

F Care andMaintenance

To keep your ba in perfect condition, some care and maintenance is necessary. This will guarantee a safe and long-lastingusage and preserves the joy of using yourba for many years .

Only carry outmaintenance work forwhich you have the

necessary tools and expertise! Ifin doubt, have the maintenancecarried out by your ba dealer!

Before carrying out anymaintenance work, alwaysremove the battery first,

unless it is explicitly required for themaintenance work carried out!

If you manipulate theelectrical system, yourba will no longer be

safe to use. Using your ba withmanipulated electric controls onpublic roads might be a criminaloffence.

Braking system

The brakes are subjected to heavyfriction during each braking process. Thiscauses signs of wear both on the brakepads and on the brake discs. Check the

brakes regularly for wear. If the wearlimit is reached, the brake pads and,if necessary, the brake disc must bereplaced immediately. In particular, if youobserve a decreasing braking power orscratching noise when braking, the brakepads must be checked and renewed ifnecessary. Depending on the load anddriving style, the disc brakes wear off atdifferent rates. Therefore, no generalrule can be given after which distancea control and/or replacements shouldbe carried out. It is better to check thecondition of the brake pads more oftenthan too rarely.

Falling below the wear limitcan lead to total failure ofyour brake system.

Be sure to read theoperating instructionsprovided by the brake

manufacturer! If the operatinginstructions are not available, contactyour dealer.

Changing brake padsFor changing the brake pads, follow theinstructions of the brake manufacturer.

Only use original spareparts from the brakemanufacturer. If in doubt,

let your dealer service the brakes ofyour ba .

Changing brake diskIf the wear limit of the brake disc hasbeen reached, please contact your dealer. He will professionally replace the brakediscs.

More extensivemaintenance work onyour brake system should

only be carried out by qualifiedpersons. Improper maintenance cancause leaks or trapped air, which canlead to failure of the brake system.

Bleeding the brakeIf your brake no longer has a definedpressure point and feels spongy, theremay be air in the hydraulic hoses. In thatcase the brake has to be bled. The exactprocedure of bleeding is described in theinstructions of the brake manufacturer. As properly bleeding the brakes requiressome experience, it is best to ask yourdealer to do this.

When servicing andcleaning your ba ,make sure that no cleaning

agents or oil gets in contact withthe brake discs or brake pads as thiswould strongly decrease the brakingpower or even lead to a total failureof the brakes.

Initially preparing the brakeAfter replacing the brake pads orbrake disc, the brake has to be initiallyprepared to regain full braking power.Proceed as follows: Drive slowly approx.50m with slightly applied brakes. As aresult, the temperature of the brakepads and brake disc are increased. Then accelerate to about 25km / h and

brake with maximum braking power tostandstill. Make sure that you do notendanger yourself or other road usersduring this process. Perform this processup to 10 times consecutively. After a fewbraking manoeuvres you should noticea significant improvement of the brakingpower.

Do not change the routeof the hydraulic hosesof your brake system.

Incorrect routing may cause thehydraulic lines to be pinched orstretched, which can lead to leaksand failure of the brake system.

Regularly check the brakelines for kinks or leaks.Damaged or broken brake

lines can lead to a failure of the brakesystem and subsequently to seriousaccidents!

Never operate the brakelevers with the wheelsremoved. As a result, the

brake pads would close and thebrake disc can no longer be slid inthe caliper.

Gear shift

Your ba is equipped with a ShimanoAlfine 8-speed internal gear hub. Amajor advantage of the internal gearhub is the fact that the moving partsare encapsulated inside the hub and

thus protected from dirt. Comparedto a derailleur system much of themaintenance tasks therefore are omitted. In the case of unprecise gear change, strange noise or slippage of the chainplease let your dealer check the hub!

Carefully read theinstruction manual bythe manufacturer of the

hub which was supplied with yourba .

Adjusting the gears JN

Switch to 4th gear. In this gear, thetwo green markings 1 , fig. 13, p. 31on the hub must be aligned to eachother. If this is not the case, turn theadjusting screw on the handle. Turningthe adjusting screw clockwise movesthe outer marking to the front, turningcounterclockwise moves it to the rear.

Chassis

Checking the toe angleThe toe angle is set correctly when thetwo front wheels are parallel and inforward direction when steering forward. If the toe angle is set correctly once, asit is during assembly, it normally shouldnot change over time. If the toe anglechanges noticeably this is an indicationof damage to the chassis. In this case, please have your ba checked byyour dealer. The toe angle is checked by

Figure 14. : Checking the toe angle

measuring the distance between the twofront wheels in the front and at the back.To this end first rotate the handlebars, such that both wheels are facing forward. As a reference point for measuring useeither the rim shoulder or a groove onthe tire. Use the same reference pointsfor both the distance measurement in thefront and at the back.

If the measured distance is the same at

the front and at the rear, the toe angle isset correctly. If the two distances differby more than 2mm, the toe angle mustbe readjusted.

A sudden change of thetoe angle is an indicationthat some component of

the chassis was deformed and thusmight fail in further use. Therefore, ifthe toe angle is misaligned, let yourba be checked by your dealerbefore further use.

A wrong toe angle implieshigher rolling resistanceand higher tire wear. Please

check regularly if the toe angle is stillset correctly.

Adjusting the toe angleTo adjust the toe angle, first lock out

1 2 3 12

Figure 15. : Adjusting the toe angle1 : Tie rod ends2 : lock nut3 : tie rod

the tilt (see section Tilt lock p.18) andfix the handlebars in forward position. Then loosen both lock nuts 2 of the tierod ends 1 of the right tie rod fig. 15,p. 32.Now turn the tie rod 3 , untilthe right front wheel points exactly intoforward direction. A counterclockwiserotation (when looking outwards)

moves rotates the front wheel to theleft (inwards) a clockwise rotation tothe right (outwards). When the wheelis properly aligned the tie rod has tobe locked. To this end tighten the outerlock nut 2 with 3Nm. Make sure, thatthe tie rod does not rotate w.r.t. thetie rod end while tightening the locknut, as this would again misalign the toeangle. Having locked the outer tie rod

Figure 16. : Adjusting the anglebetween both tie rod ends

end, hand tighten the inner tie rod end’slock nut and rotate the tie rod as far aspossible forward and backward fig. 16,p. 32. This assures that the right andleft tie rod end have the correct angle(about. 30°) w.r.t. each other. Now fixthe inner tie rod end by tightening thelock nut with 3Nm. make sure that theangle between both tie rod ends doesnot change while tightening the lock nut.

Now the left tie rod has to be adjusted. To this end loosen both lock nuts of theleft tie rod. To properly adjust the toeangle, measure the distance betweenthe rim shoulder of the left and rightfront wheel, once at the foremostposition of the wheels and once at therearmost position. The difference shouldbe at most 2mm. If the difference is

andMaintenance

bigger, it has to be compensated byturning the left tie rod. Rotating the tierod counterclockwise (when lookingoutwards) increases the distance atthe back and decreases the distance inthe front and vice versa for a clockwiserotation. If both distances are equalthe toe angle is correctly adjusted.Tighten the lock nuts in the same wayas described for the right tie rod.

As adjusting the toe angleneeds some experienceand the proper tools

it is better to let your dealerdo this. Damaged tie rods orunproperly mounted and lockedtie rod ends may render your ba

uncontrollable, possibly leading tosevere accidents.

Checking the tie rod endsPlease regularly check the wear of the tierod ends. To this end move the tie rodend 1 , fig. 15, p. 32 up and down withmoderate force. If there is a play of morethan 2mm in this direction, the tie rodend has to be replaced. Please contactyour ba dealer.

Worn-out tie rod endsnegatively effect thesteering characteristics.

Therefore please have the tie rodends replaced in case of wear assoon as possible.

Checking thesuspension elementba is equipped with a sturdyelastomer suspension element thatrequires no special care and normallydoes not wear out or need to be

replaced. Nevertheless, check at regularintervals, whether the suspensionelements shows any signs of wear, inparticular whether the connectionbetween the elastomer and the metalplates comes off. If this is the case, thesuspension element must be replacedimmediately.

Replacing thesuspension elementThe suspension element covers theentire range of payloads from emptyrun to the maximum permissible load.An adaptation is therefore usually notrequired. The damper element needs tobe replaced only in case of damage. Toreplace the damper element, it is best tofix your ba in a work stand. Lock outthe tilting (see section Tilt lock p.18).

11

Figure 17. : Replacing the suspensionelement1 : Fixing screws suspension element

Then loosen the two screws on theright hand side 1 , fig. 17, p. 33 andthe two screws on the left hand sides, which fix the suspension element to theupper A-arms. Please hold the respectivewheel while loosening the second screwon each side and then gently let thewheel come down up to the stop. Now

the suspension element is ready to beremoved. To this end bend the left andright hand side of the suspension elementupwards and then remove the element. The child version especially has very littleclearance above the suspension element. Here it is best to unlock the tilting andto rotate the suspension element andthe central part to which it is attached asfar as possible to one side to get moreclearance. Mounting the new suspensionelement is done analogously in reverseorder. Tighten the screws with a torqueof 2Nm.

Make sure that there areno external forces on theA-arms while working on

the suspension element, as there isa risk of crushing when the A-armsmove. Since replacing the suspensionelement requires expertise and theright tool, you should leave this taskto your dealer.

Wheels

Your ba is equipped with high-qualitywheels that are maintenance-free whenused properly. Nevertheless, checkregularly whether your wheels have aradial or axial run-out, no spokes aredamaged and the spoke tension is nottoo low. To check the spoke tension, press together two spokes at a time ofeach side of the wheel with your thumband forefinger. If individual spokes feelloose or if you notice different spoketensions, please let the wheel be checkedby your dealer.

Damaged spokes must bereplaced immediately asthey may lead to a total

failure of the wheel.

Regularly check the tire for damage tothe tread or side surfaces. If damageis visible, the tire must be replacedimmediately.

As soon as the green or blue punctureprotection on the tread of the tire isvisible, the wear limit is reached. At thelatest then the tire must be replaced.

The following tire types are permitted:Front wheel Rear wheel

If sand, small stones orthe like accumulate in the plastic tubor on the cushions,it is best to removethem with a common vacuum cleaner.Staining of the fabric cover or the plastictub can be removed with a soft spongeand lukewarm water.

Only use water and, ifnecessary, mild soap toclean the cabin. Do not

use any aggressive cleaning agentsas these could damage the fabriccovering.

Regularly check that thebelt system is properlyattached to the cabin and

in impeccable condition. Damagedstraps or buckles must be replacedimmediately! An improperly fastenedor worn belt system may break, loose or rupture in the event of animpact, resulting in serious injury tothe child!

Regularly check that theplastic tub has no cracks orother damage! A damaged

tub must be replaced immediately!

From time to time, check that the screwsconnecting the various cabin tubes havenot loosened and, if necessary, retightenthem to the specified torques (seesection Tightening torques of certain screwsp.<Pgrf2>). Under no circumstancesshould you exceed the specified torque,as otherwise the pipes may be deformed.

Transport platform K

The transport platform consists ofwaterproof glued phenolic resincoated plywood. At the cutting, drillingand milling surfaces, the plate needsadditional protection against penetratingmoisture. Upon delivery, such protectionis applied. However, due to mechanicalstress and wear the sealing propertiesmay be lost over time. Therefore, fromtime to time, check that the edge sealingis still in good condition and renew thesealing if necessary.

Chain

The chain of a cargo bike is exposed tohigh forces and therefore requires regularcare and maintenance. Dirty chains aresubject to increased wear.

Just as important as a well-cleanedand lubricated chain is the right chaintension. An incorrect chain tension hasnegative effects on the wear out ofother parts such as sprocket or chainwheel. Furthermore, the chain can jumpoff the sprocket or chainwheel due toinsufficient chain tension. Furthermore, the right chain tension is important fora precise shifting of the gear hub. Checkthe chain tension regularly and adjust it ifnecessary.

Due to the loads occurring duringpedalling, the chain lengthens with time.Since the elongated chain links no longeroptimally fit the teeth of the chainwheeland sprocket, these parts are subjectto increased wear. Therefore, the chainmust be replaced in good time. If thesprockets and / or the chainwheelare already worn out, it is advisable toreplace them together with the chain.

CleaningTo clean the chain, first removedirt and lubricants with a dry cloth. Nowapply a suitable chain lubricant and let itact for a few minutes. Excess lubricant isthen removed with a cloth.

When lubricating the chain, make sure that no lubricantgets in contact with the

brake discs or brake pads and thetires as this would greatly reduce thebraking power and the road grip ofthe tires.

When servicing thechain, always inspect thechainwheel and sprocket

and clean them if necessary.

Checking the chain tensionTo check the chain tension, pull theupper chain strand up in the middle, fig. 18, p. 36. The deflection of the chain, symbolized by the red arrow, should beabout 1cm to 1.5cm. Otherwise, thechain tension must be readjusted. Toohigh chain tension is just as bad as a toolow chain tension!

Figure 18. : Checking the chain tension

Adjusting the chain tensionFirst loosen the two screws that holdthe right and the two screws that holdthe left rear fork end slider to the frame1 , fig. 19, p. 36. This allows the rear

fork end slider to move horizontallytogether with the rear wheel. If you nowpull the rear wheel backwards, the chaintension increases. The correct chaintension is achieved when the chain canbe compressed in the middle by about2cm. When tightening the screws ofthe drop out sliders, make sure that the

wheel is properly centred.

Checking chain elongationWe recommend to check the chainlength every 1000km. The elongationof the chain can be determined witha standard calliper. Set the calliper to118mm and put the two ends for theouter measurement in the free spacebetween two rolls of the tensioned chain, most simply at the upper chain strandfig. 20, p. 37. Then slide the calliper apartuntil it touches the rollers. Now read offthe distance. The 119.6mm measuredin fig. 20, p. 37 correspond to a newchain. Up to a distance of 120.25mmthe elongation of the chain is still inthe tolerance range. If the distance isbigger, it is time to replace the chain.Chain wear gauges are also commerciallyavailable, making the determination ofchain elongation even easier. If you donot want to do the check yourself, yourba dealer will be happy to assist youin checking and possibly changing thechain.

The replacement of thechain requires special toolsand expertise and should

therefore be done by your dealer.Worn sprockets or chain wheelsshould also be replaced at the sametime if necessary.

Lighting system

Check regularly that the head light andthe tail light of your ba are working.Make sure that the headlight is properlyadjusted such that you do not blindapproaching traffic or pedestrians.

Wear parts

Most components of your ba last awhole life cycle. However, some partsare subject to wear and must be regularlyreplaced and renewed. The achievableservice life of these parts depends onthe specific use of your ba and theproper maintenance. The wear parts are

Brake pads

Chain, chain ring and rear sprocket

Tie rod ends

These parts must be replaced whenreaching the wear limit.

Spare parts

If any component of your ba isdamaged, you get the respectivereplacement parts from your dealer.

Cleaning

Regularly clean your ba . Roadsalt in winter can especially lead toincreased corrosion if it is not removedimmediately. Just use a soft cloth orsponge and pure water. Do not usea pressure blaster because due to thehigh pressure water will pass into sealedareas and can cause damage there. Ingeneral, you do not need any additionalcleaning products. For heavy grease oroil stains, you can use a standard cleaningproduct for bicycles. Make sure that thechosen product does not attack the paintsurfaces.

Use the cleaning process to examineyour ba for possible damage such asdeeper scratches, bumps, cracks, etc. Ifyou notice any damage, please contactyour dealer!

After cleaning your ba and drying offthe remaining water, we recommend thatyou preserve your ba . To this endappropriate bicycle care products canbe used. Follow the instructions of the

chosen product.

Pedelec variant D Water isconductive and causes short circuits if itgets into places where it is not intendedto be. Although the pedelec drivesystem of your ba is designed towithstand heavy rain, it is not completelywaterproof. Therefore, when cleaningwith water, make sure that no runningwater reaches the components of thedrive system. Individual water splashesare harmless. In particular, do notsubmerge your ba for washing.Ideally, use only a damp cloth aroundthe Pedelec components. Again, do notuse any aggressive cleaners, as they maypossibly damage the insulation of thecables and cause short circuits.
