The international LONGINES warranty covers materialand manufacturing defects existing at the time of deliveryof the purchased LONGINES watch (“defects”). The war-ranty only comes into force if the warranty certificate isdated, fully and correctly completed and stamped by anofficial LONGINES dealer (“valid warranty certificate”).

During the warranty period and by presenting the validwarranty certificate, you will have the right to have anydefect repaired free of charge. In the event that repairsare improper to restore the normal conditions of use ofyour LONGINES watch, Longines Watch Co. FrancillonLtd guarantees its replacement by a LONGINES watchof identical or similar characteristics. RECOMMENDATIONS

Like any micromechanical precision instrument, yourLONGINES watch should be checked at least every twoyears.

If you have a self-winding watch, it has a power-reserveof around two days. If necessary it can be wound man-ually.

If you have a quartz watch the electrical power is sup-plied by a battery. After 12 to 18 months of use (with theexception of watches with lithium batteries) the voltagein the battery may drop suddenly and cause your watchto stop. Some models have a battery end-of-life func-tion. The seconds hand will start to jump every 4 sec-onds. If this happens we recommend that you replacethe battery immediately, because once the batteryruns down totally it may damage your watch.

Collection and treatment of end of life quartz watches*

This symbol indicates that this productshould not be disposed with householdwaste. It has to be returned to a local au-thorized collection system. By following thisprocedure you will contribute to the protec-tion of the environment and human health. The recyclingof the materials will help to conserve natural resources.

SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS

What can I do to ensure that my LONGINES watchfunctions perfectly for many years?

Magnetic fields: avoid putting your watch on a loud-speaker or on a refrigerator because these machines cre-ate magnetic fields that may damage it.

Salt-water: always rinse your watch in fresh water afterswimming in the sea.

Shocks: avoid subjecting your watch to any shocks, in-cluding sudden changes in temperature.

Screw-in crown: always make sure you have screwed thecrown in fully to avoid any humidity getting into themechanism.

Push-in crown: always push the crown back into the neu-tral position to avoid any humidity getting into themechanism.

Cleaning: use a tooth-brush and soapy water to cleanmetal bracelets and water-resistant cases and a soft clothto dry off afterwards.

Chemical products: avoid all direct contact with solvents,detergents, perfume, cosmetics, etc. which may dam-age the bracelet or strap, the case or the seals.

Temperatures: avoid exposing your watch to extreme tem-peratures (over 60°C or 140°F and under 0°C or 32°F)and to sudden fluctuations in temperature.

Water-resistance:we cannot guarantee that your watchwill be permanently water-resistant. The seal may be af-fected by wear or by an accidental shock to the crown.As recommended in our service instructions, youshould have the water-resistant seals of your watch test-ed once a year by an approved LONGINES agent.

Chronograph push-pieces: do not adjust the push-piecesunder water as this may allow humidity to get into themechanism.

Occasional winding: if your watch has not been worn for44 hours or more, wind it manually with the crown in po-sition 1.

How often should my watch be serviced?Like any other precision instrument a watch should beserviced regularly to ensure that it runs perfectly. We can-not say how often you should have your watch servicedas this depends on the model, the climate where youlive and how you look after the watch yourself. As a rule,a watch should be serviced every 4 or 5 years, dependingon the conditions in which it is worn.

Where should I go to get my watch serviced or for anew battery?We recommend that you go to an approved LONGINESagent or retailer. They are the only people who have thenecessary tools and apparatus to work on your watchand to carry out the necessary checks to a profession-al level. Moreover, only specialists can guarantee that theirwork meets the stringent quality standards set byLONGINES.

The precision of a mechanical movement varies de-pending on the wearer’s habits. The majority ofLONGINES watches have a precision of between -15and +15 seconds per day.

Quartz movements

The ambient temperature affects the precision of a quartzmovement, which will be between -0.3 and +0.5 sec-onds per month.

We recommend that you wash your rubber strap regularly with soap and water, especially onthe inside.

� Measure the circumference ofyour wrist by wrapping the strapround it. Half the number of holesthat overlap indicates the length thatsuits your wrist.

Example: half resulting in an even num-ber: 8 overlapping holes, half of 8 is4, remove 2 holes on each section.

Half resulting in a odd number: 14overlapping holes, half of 14 is 7, re-move 4 holes on the section of thestrap at 12 o’clock and 3 holes onthe section at 6 o’clock.

� Release the adjusting mechanism by removing the pinfrom the hole in the long section of the strap.

� Slide the mechanism along this long section and thenfix it by reinserting the pin in the desired hole.

Opening the clasp

� To open the clasp press in the push-pieces on eitherside simultaneously.

� Open the clasp to enlarge the bracelet and removethe watch from your wrist.

Closing the clasp

� Put the bracelet on your wrist and slide the long sec-tion through the small fixed buckle.

� Close the folding clasp until it clicks into place. If nec-essary, slide the long section through the small mobilebuckle.

CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY

Longines bows to the paragon of beauty: the diamond

This certificate of authenticity guarantees the quality ofeach precious stone selected by Longines’ specialists.

The cut: Longines diamonds are cut in the traditional bril-liant style.

The purity: the degree of purity of a Longines diamondis VVS (very very small inclusions). This means that it mayinclude minute imperfections which are hardly visible un-der tenfold magnification.

The colour: the colour of the diamonds used by Longinesis Top Wesselton.

The weight: the weight of a diamond is measured incarats, one carat being equal to one fifth of a gram.


Precautions regarding water-resistance

If your watch is water-resistant it is essential that the sealsbe checked each year before the bathing season be-cause, without your realising it, they might have beendamaged as the result of a shock.

If the case has to be opened for any reason the sealsfor the glass and the case-back as well as the crown(and/or push-pieces) must be checked and, if necessary,replaced.

Screw-in crown and push-pieces

Certain Longines models have a screw-in crown whichhas to be unscrewed before each adjustment by turn-ing it anti-clockwise (fig.�).

After use, return the crown to position 2, then push inand screw in firmly in position 1 to ensure that the sealwith the case is water-resistant (fig.�).

THE SAME APPLIES FOR THE SCREW-IN PUSH-PIECES

IMPORTANT! You should always push the crown (and/orthe push-pieces) right in and screw in firmly to ensurea water-resistant seal with the case. The crown (and/orpush-pieces) should never be adjusted if the watch isin a humid atmosphere.

Pull the crown right out to position 3. The seconds handwill now stop. Adjust the time by turning the crown ineither direction. Synchronise your watch with a time sig-nal (telephone, radio, TV) and then push the crown backin to position 1. The seconds hand will jump again ex-actly one second later (logical function of adjusting thetime), which means that your watch will now be perfectlysynchronised with the time signal.

Power-reserve indicator

Certain watches have a power-reserve indicator (calibresL602, L693, L697).

If the watch is worn rarely or not at all, the hand will grad-ually shift anti-clockwise. When it indicates that thepower-reserve is below 1/4, the watch should either bewound or worn to avoid it stopping.

When the watch is wound the power-reserve indicatorwill shift clockwise.

When the hour hand passes midnight, the date willchange automatically, indicating either the next day orthe day before, depending on the direction you turn thecrown. It is necessary to adjust the date at the end ofeach month with less than 31 days. Push the crown backin to position 1.

How to use your Longines24 Time zone watch

Pull the crown right out to position 3. The seconds handwill now stop.

Turn the crown in either direction so that your local time(winter time) is displayed on the 24-hour disc oppositethe town in the time zone where you are.

Push the crown back in to the intermediate position 2and adjust the hour hand to local time, checking that thedate jumps at midnight. Push the crown back in to po-sition 1.

Your watch now shows universal time on the 24-hourdisc and local time by the hands.

Example : 23 February, Paris, GMT (London) is at12 o’clock, the hands show 10 hours and 8 minutes andon the disc the 10 is opposite Paris.

How to use when travelling

Pull the crown out to the intermediate position 2. Adjustthe hour hand to correspond to the time zone of the townwhere you are (see table of towns). Push the crown backin.

Certain countries have summer time; to adjust yourwatch, carry out the same procedure.

The original Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch was designedby Charles Lindbergh as a navigational aid for pilots. Usedwith a sextant and a nautical almanac, this watch en-ables the wearer to quickly determine the hour angle fromGreenwich, in other words his or her longitude.

Thanks to its ingenious combination of dials, this time-piece differs from an ordinary watch in three ways:

A The indications on the dial are designed in such a waythat they show simultaneously the time (in hours, min-utes and seconds) and the hour angle (in degrees andminutes of arc).

B The rotating central dial shows the seconds and it canbe turned using the crown in order to synchronise thewatch with a time signal.

C The bezel can be rotated to correct the equation oftime (which varies from one day to the next).

3-position crown


The natural movements of your wrist will automaticallywind your Longines watch, which has a power-reserveof 42 hours. It is only necessary to wind the watch man-ually if it has not been worn for several days.


Pull the crown right out to position 3. The seconds handwill now stop. Adjust the time by turning the crown ineither direction. Synchronise the watch with a time sig-nal (telephone, radio, TV) and then push the crown backin to position 1.

Synchronising the watch with a time signal

In the intermediate position 2, the crown can be usedto turn the central dial (in either direction). Pull the crownout to the intermediate position 2 and turn the centraldial so that the seconds hand points to the “60/15” po-sition on the last pip of the time signal. Push the crownback in to position 1.

This is for opening the case back, thus revealing themovement through a protective sapphire glass.

The space/time dial and how it works

The design of the whole of The Lindbergh Hour AngleWatch takes into account the fact that the Earth revolvesthrough 360° in 24 hours, through 180° in 12 hours,through 15° in 1 hour and through 15’ of arc in 1 minute.

The hour hand indicates 15° per hour. One complete cir-cle of the dial (12 hours) is equivalent to 180°.

The minute hand indicates 1° per 4’, in other words 15°per hour. Each of the 15° is subdivided into four sectorsof 15’ of arc. All these indications are engraved on therotating bezel.

One complete circle of the centre seconds is equivalentto 15’ of arc. The rotating central dial is divided into 60’’and 15’ of arc.

How to use your Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch

Having synchronised your watch with a time signal. Asan example when you check it your watch shows4 hours, 37 minutes and 12 seconds. The equation oftime for the day in question is minus 4 minutes and50 seconds.

Therefore move the marker situated at “15” on the bezel4 graduations to the left. These graduations representthe minutes engraved around the case.

Your data are as follows:

Seconds hand (centre dial) 3’

Hour hand (main dial) 60°

As you have only turned the bezel by 4 min-utes, you still have to take into account the50 seconds (the equation of time being4minutes and 50 seconds for the day inquestion).

The power-reserve indicator will shift automaticallywhen the watch is wound manually or by the movementsof your wrist.


Pull the crown right out to position 3. The seconds handwill now stop. Adjust the time by turning it in either di-

rection. Synchronise your watch with a time signal (tele-phone, radio, TV) and then push the crown back in. In order to ensure that the date and day change at mid-night, please follow the instructions below beforechanging the date and the day of the week.

Pull the crown out to position 2 (Quick time adjustment)and turn it clockwise until the hour hand has complet-ed one circle.

Push the crown back in to position 1 (Winding).

Check that the day of the week has changed.

If so, the watch will now indicate morning (a.m.). If thewatch indicates morning but it is in fact afternoon pullthe crown out to position 2 (Quick time adjustment) andturn it until the hour hand has completed one circle.

If, however, the day of the week has not changed, thewatch will indicate afternoon (p.m.). If the watch indicatesafternoon but it is in fact morning pull the crown out toposition 2 (Quick time adjustment) and turn it until the hourhand has completed one circle.


24-hour indicator: if you do not wish to use the Secondtime zone function you can convert it into a 24-hour in-dicator. This will enable you to avoid this step in the fu-ture. See under: Synchronising the time in a second timezone / 24-hour indicator.

Example: you are on Geneva time (home) and it is 8 a.m.You know that there is an 8-hour difference betweenSwitzerland and Japan.

Option a: you leave your watch on Geneva time and date.You press push-piece C to adjust the time in the secondtime zone so that the 24-hour hand is on 16 (4 p.m.Japanese time).

Option b: you travel to Japan and want your watch toshow Japanese time and date. You adjust the time byturning the crown (in position 2) clockwise so that the24-hour hand is on the 4 (4 p.m. Japanese time). Thenpush the crown back in. The time shown in the secondtime zone will stay at 8 a.m. (Geneva time: home).

Synchronising the time in the second time zone /the 24-hour hand

To synchronise the time in the second time zone with theactual time where you are, use push-piece C. If the watchstops you will immediately see from the time in the sec-ond time zone whether your watch is showing morning(a.m.) or afternoon (p.m.).

Please note that if you use the Quick time adjustment func-tion (crown in position 2), the synchronisation will be in-terrupted.

CHRONOGRAPHS – GENERAL INFORMATION

The chronograph

The chronograph is an instrument for measuring shortperiods of time. It is used mainly in sport but also in avi-ation or for scientific experiments, for example.

Split-seconds function

In a chronograph with a split-seconds function, a sec-ond hand is superimposed over the trotteuse. When in-termediate times are read off, only the split-seconds handstops. When the push-piece is pressed again, it catch-es up with the trotteuse.

Tachometric scale

The tachometric scale is a series of graduations on thedial or the bezel of the chronograph that enable the userto determine mean speeds on the basis of an observationtime of less than 60 seconds.

Measure the time needed to cover 1 kilometre (or 1 mile).The position of the seconds hand when it stops indicatesthe mean speed. If it takes 30 seconds to cover 1 km(or 1 mile), the scale will indicate a mean speed of120 kph (or 120 mph).

IMPORTANT! The time should not be adjusted while thechronograph function is being used.

As far as concerns the chronograph functions, thesemodels can be used to time events that last up to 30minutes (cal. L538) or 12 hours (cal. L541), and showthe results to a 1/10th of a second.

3-position crown


In order to synchronise your watch with a time signal (ra-dio, telephone, etc.), pull the crown right out to position 3,when the small seconds is on the 60, then push thecrown back in again to position 1 on the time signal. Thedate will change every time the hour hand passes mid-night.

Changing the time zone and the date

Pull the crown out to the intermediate position 2. The hourhand can be moved in either direction without affectingthe minute and seconds hands. Turn the crown until the

desired date appears. The date changes at midnight.Push the crown back in to position 1.

Used for measuring successive events but not the in-tervals between them. Each result is automaticallyadded to the preceding one. To time the different stagesof a car rally, for example:

At the start of the first stage, press push-piece A to startthe chronograph.

At the end of the first stage, press push-piece A againand the chronograph will stop.

Repeat this procedure for each stage of the rally.

At the end of the final stage the chronograph will showthe total time of the rally, in other words, the accumu-lated time for all the stages.

Press push-piece B to return to zero.

Split function (intermediate times)

This function is used to time one single event. Interme-diate times are accumulated throughout the event.

IMPORTANT! While the watch displays an intermediate timethe chronograph function will still be timing the event.

Press push-piece A at the start of the event you wish totime, for example a walking race.

Press push-piece B to see the first intermediate time.

Press push-piece B again and the chronograph handswill jump to the correct time since the start of the race.

Repeat this procedure, pressing push-piece B once tosee the second intermediate time and again to make thechronograph hands jump to the current time.

IMPORTANT! Pressing on push-pieces A and B for morethan a second will cause the hands to move forwardrapidly.

Start: press push-piece Awhen the horse passes a givenmarker (fig.�).

Stop: press push-piece A again when the horse passesthe second marker placed 1 km from the first one (fig.�).

Speed: in this example, the horse has taken 65 secondsto cover one kilometre, with an averge speed of around55 kph.

IMPORTANT! The date and the phases of theMoon shouldnot be adjusted between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. as doing somay damage the mechanism.







Timing a single event:

Press push-piece A to start the chronograph.Press push-piece A again to stop the chronograph.Press push-piece B to return to zero.


For timing successive events but not the intervals be-tween them. Each result will be automatically added tothe preceding one. To time different stages of a car rally,proceed as follows:

At the start of the first stage, press push-piece A and thechronograph will start.


Repeat for each stage of the rally. At the end of the finalstage the chronograph will show the total time taken, inother words the accumulated time for all the stages.

L686 – 24 HOURS

Shows the hours, minutes, seconds and date, as wellas a second time zone.

The chronograph functions enable the user to time eventslasting up to 12 hours and display the results to 1/5thof a second.

3-position crown


The natural movements of your wrist will automaticallywind your Longines chronograph, which has a power-reserve of 46 hours. It is only necessary to wind the watchmanually if it has not been worn for several days.


Pull the crown right out to position 3, which will stop thesmall seconds on the dial. Adjust the time by turning thecrown in either direction. Synchronise your watch witha time signal (telephone, radio, TV) and push the crownback in again to position 1.


Pull the crown out to the intermediate position 2, turnit forwards to the desired date and then push it back inagain to position 1. It is necessary to adjust the date atthe end of each month with less than 31 days.

Adjusting the time in a second time zone when travel-ling (24 hour hand)

Pull the crown out to the intermediate position 2. Turnit backwards to reverse the second time zone hand bysuccessive 1-hour steps, which will not affect theminute and seconds hands.

Adjust the 24-hour hand according to the time zone ofyour present location. Push the crown back in to posi-tion 1 after each adjustment.
