This appliance contains the coolant Isobutane (R600a), a naturalgas which is environmentally friendly. Although it is flammable, itdoes not damage the ozone layer and has a lower greenhouse effectthan some other refrigerants. The use of this coolant, however, leads to a slight increase in thenoise level of the appliance. In addition to the noise of thecompressor, you might be able to hear the coolant flowing aroundthe system. This is unavoidable and does not have any adverseeffect on the performance of the appliance.Care must be taken during the transportation and setting up of theappliance that no parts of the cooling system are damaged. Leakingrefrigerant can damage the eyes.In the event of any damage:

– avoid any flames or anything which creates a spark,

– disconnect the appliance from the mains electricity supply,

– ventilate the room where the appliance is located for severalminutes, and

– call Miele.

The more coolant there is in a refrigeration appliance, the largerthe room should be in which it is installed. In the event of a leakage,if the appliance is in a small room, there is a danger of combustiblegases building up. For every 11 g of coolant at least 1 m3 of roomspace is required. The amount of coolant in the appliance is statedon a data plate inside the appliance.

To avoid the risk of damage to the appliance, make sure that theconnection data (fuse rating, frequency and voltage) on the dataplate corresponds to the household supply. Check that this is thecase before connecting the appliance. Consult a qualified electrician if in any doubt.

The electrical safety of this appliance can only be guaranteedwhen correctly earthed. It is essential that this standard safetyrequirement is met. If in any doubt please have the electricalinstallation tested by a qualified electrician.

The correct temperature

26

It is very important to set the correcttemperature for storing food in theappliance. Micro-organisms will causefood which is not stored at the correcttemperature to deteriorate rapidly.Temperature influences the growth rateof these micro-organisms. Reducing thetemperature reduces their growth rate.

The temperature in the appliance willrise:

– the more often the door is openedand the longer it is kept open,

– the more food is stored in therefrigerator,

– the warmer the food is which is beingput into it,

– the higher the ambient temperaturesurrounding the appliance. Theappliance is designed for use withinspecific ambient temperatures(climate range). Do not use inambient temperatures for which it isnot designed.

. . . in the refrigerator sectionand in the PerfectFresh ProzoneWe recommend a temperature of 4 °Cin the refrigerator section.

The temperature in the PerfectFresh Prozone is controlled automatically andmaintained at 0 to 3 °C.

Automatic temperature distribution(DynaCool)

The fan switches on automatically whenthe cooling system for the refrigeratorswitches on. It distributes thetemperature in the appliance to all areasmore evenly so that all the food ischilled to about the same degree.

. . . in the freezer sectionTo freeze fresh food and to store frozenfood for a long time, a temperature of-18 °C is required. At this temperaturethe growth of micro-organisms isgenerally halted. As soon as thetemperature rises above -10 °C, themicro-organisms become active in thefood again so that it cannot be kept aslong. For this reason, partially defrostedor fully defrosted food must not berefrozen. Food may be refrozen once ithas been cooked, as the hightemperatures achieved when cookingdestroy most micro-organisms.

Different storage zonesDue to the natural air circulation thereare different temperature zones in therefrigerator section.

Cold, heavy air sinks to the lowestsection of the appliance. Make use ofthe different temperature zones whenplacing food in the appliance.

To allow air to circulate efficiently, donot pack food too closely together inthe refrigerator.

Do not cover the fan in the rear wall ofthe refrigerator, as this is essential forkeeping the appliance cool.

Food must not touch the back of therefrigerator section as it may freeze tothe back wall.

This appliance has DynaCool, whichhelps to keep an even temperaturewhen the fan is running. WhenDynaCool is switched on, thedifference between the various zonesis less pronounced.

Warmest area

The warmest area is located in the topsection of the main storage area andthe door. Use this for storing butter sothat it remains spreadable and forcheese so that it retains its flavour.

Coldest area

The coldest area in the refrigeratorsection is directly above thePerfectFresh Pro zone dividing plateand at the back of the appliance. Thetemperature in the PerfectFresh Prozone compartments is even colder.

Use these areas in the refrigeratorsection and in the PerfectFresh Prozone for all delicate and highlyperishable food, e.g.

– fish, meat, poultry

– sausage products, ready meals

– dishes or baked goods containingeggs or cream

– fresh dough, cake mixtures, pizza orquiche dough

– soft cheese and other dairy products

– pre-packed vegetables and otherfresh food with a label stating itshould be kept at a temperature ofapprox. 4 °C.

41

Food which is not suitable forstorage in the refrigeratorsectionNot all food is suitable for refrigerationat temperatures below 5 °C because itis sensitive to cold. Depending on thetype of food, the appearance, consistency, flavour and/or vitamincontent may be altered if stored at toocold a temperature.

Foods which are sensitive to coldinclude:

– Pineapples, avocados, bananas, pomegranates, mangoes, melons, papayas, passionfruit, citrus fruitssuch as lemons, oranges, mandarines, grapefruits

– Fruit which is not yet ripe

– Eggplants, cucumbers, potatoes, capsicums, tomatoes, zucchini

– Hard cheeses, e.g. Parmesan,mountain cheese.

What to be aware of whenshopping for foodThe freshness of food when first placedin the appliance is the most importantfactor in determining how long it staysfresh, and how long it can be kept in theappliance.Always observe the use-by date andthe recommended storage temperature.Time out of the refrigerator should bekept to a minimum, for example, whentransporting food in a hot car.

Useful tip: Take a cooler bag with youwhen shopping and on return placefood into the appliance immediately.

Storing food correctlyEnsure that food stored in therefrigerator section is in packaging orcovered properly (some exceptionsapply in the PerfectFresh Pro zone). This will prevent food smells fromaffecting other foods, food from dryingout, and also any cross-contaminationof bacteria. This is especially importantwhen storing meat products.By ensuring that the temperaturesettings are correct and by takingappropriate hygiene measures, you canprolong the storage life of your foodconsiderably.

Page 42: Operating and installation instructions Fridge-freezer · 2018-05-29 · Operating and installation instructions Fridge-freezer To prevent the risk of accidents or damage to the appliance,

Storing food in the PerfectFresh Pro zone

42

The PerfectFresh Pro zone providesideal storage conditions for fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and dairyproducts. Food stays fresh considerablylonger while retaining both flavour andvitamins.

The temperature in the PerfectFresh Prozone is controlled automatically andmaintained at 0 to 3 °C. While lowerthan the temperature in a conventionalrefrigerator, this is the optimumtemperature range for storing fresh foodwhich is not sensitive to cold. Thedeterioration process is decelerated atthis temperature range so food can bestored without loss of freshness forconsiderably longer.

In addition, the humidity level in thePerfectFresh Pro zone can be regulatedto suit the food being stored. Foodretains its own moisture if stored at ahigher humidity and does not dry out asquickly. This allows it to stay crisp andfresh for longer.

Remember that the freshness of thefood when first placed in theappliance is the most important factorin determining how long it will stayfresh.

Take food out of the PerfectFresh Prozone approx. 30 to 60 minutes beforeusing it. The aroma and taste do notfully develop until the food hasreached room temperature.

The PerfectFresh Pro zone is dividedinto two compartments:

The Info system (shown here insections) above the PerfectFresh Prozone helps you to choose the correctcompartment and the appropriatesetting in the humidity controlledcompartment.

– The temperature in the upper drycompartment is between 0 and 3 °Cand the humidity level is notincreased . Use this compartment tostore fish, meat, dairy products andany other type of food, providing it iswrapped.

– The lower humidity controlledcompartment has a temperature of0 °C to 3 °C, and the humidity level isincreased depending on the positionof the slide control: not increased,or / increased. With increasedhumidity use this compartement tostore fruit and vegetables.

Each type of food has its owncharacteristics and requires certainstorage conditions.

Page 43: Operating and installation instructions Fridge-freezer · 2018-05-29 · Operating and installation instructions Fridge-freezer To prevent the risk of accidents or damage to the appliance,

43

Dry compartment The dry compartment is suitable forstoring perishable foods such as:

– Fresh fish, shellfish and crustaceans

– Meat, poultry, sausages

– Deli salads

– Dairy products such as yoghurt, cheese, cream, quark etc.

– Any type of food can in fact be storedin this compartment, as long as it ispackaged.

The most important aspect of the drycompartment is its low temperature. The humidity level is similar to that in aconventional refrigerator.

Please note that foods rich in proteindeteriorate faster than others.Shellfish, for example, deterioratesfaster than fish, and fish deterioratesfaster than meat.

For hygiene reasons always keep thesefoods covered or wrapped.

Humidity controlledcompartment ,  /

Humidity level not increased

At the setting the humidity controlledcompartment becomes a drycompartment - the slide control opensthe vents in the compartment so thatmoisture can escape (see “Drycompartment ”).

Increased humidity  /

With the slide control in the or setting, the humidity controlledcompartment is suitable for storing fruitand vegetables:

– Select the  setting if storing a largequantity of fruit and vegetables - theslide control partially closes the ventsin the compartment so that some ofthe moisture present is retained.

– To store only a small quantity of fruitand vegetables in the humiditycontrolled compartment, select the setting - the slide control closesthe vents in the compartmentcompletely so that all of the moisturepresent is retained.

Useful tip: If the humidity level is toohigh and a lot of moisture has collectedin the compartment, select the setting. If the humidity level is toolow, wrap the food in airtight packaging.

The humidity level in the humiditycontrolled compartment is determinedby the type and quantity of food beingstored when it is not packaged.

High humidity in the humiditycontrolled compartment can causecondensate to build up on the floorof the compartment as well asbeneath the lid. This should be removed with a cloth.

Note for test institutes:When measuring the energyconsumption in accordance with thestandard, the slide control in thehumidity controlled compartmentshould be set to the  setting(“increased humidity”).

Storing food in the PerfectFresh Pro zone

45

If you are not satisfied with yourstored food (for example the foodwilts or becomes limp after only ashort storage time), check thefollowing:

Only place fresh food in the applianceas the initial condition of the food iscrucial to maintaining freshness.

Clean the PerfectFresh Procompartments before storing food inthem.

Dry the surface of very moist foodbefore placing it in the refrigerator.

Do not store any food in thePerfectFresh Pro zone which issensitive to cold (see “Food which isnot suitable for storage in therefrigerator section”).

For the type of food being stored, select the correct PerfectFresh Procompartment and the appropriateposition of the slide control for thehumidity controlled compartment (lowor high humidity).

An increased humidity level / inthe humidity controlled compartmentis achieved by the moisture present inthe food being stored, i.e. the morefood stored in the compartment, thehigher the humidity. If too much moisture has gathered inthe compartment at the settingand the food has been affected, select the setting. Otherwise drythe floor and underneath the lid witha cloth and place a rack or similaritem in the compartment so thatexcess moisture can drain away.If the humidity level is too low despitethe setting, wrap the food inairtight packaging.

If you think that the temperature inthe PerfectFresh Pro zone is too highor too low, try regulating it slightlyfirst by changing the temperature by1 or 2 °C. See “Adjusting thetemperature in the PerfectFresh Prozone”. If ice crystals start to form onthe floor of the PerfectFresh Procompartments, increase thetemperature as otherwise the coldtemperature will damage the food.

Freezing and storing food

49

Freezing fresh foodFresh food should be frozen as quicklyas possible. This way the nutritionalvalue of the food, its vitamin content, appearance and taste are not impaired.

Food which takes a long time to freezewill lose more water from its cells, which then shrink. During the defrostingprocess, only some of this water isreabsorbed by the cells; the restcollects around the food.

If food is frozen quickly, the cells haveless time to lose moisture, so theyshrink less. As there is not so muchmoisture loss, it is easier for the food toreabsorb it during the defrostingprocess, and very little water collectsaround the defrosted food.

Storing frozen foodWhen buying frozen food to store inyour freezer section, check

– that the packaging is not damaged,

– the use-by date,

– the temperature at which the frozenfood is being stored in the shop. Thelength of time it can be kept isreduced if it has been stored at atemperature warmer than -18 °C.

Buy frozen food once you havefinished the rest of your shopping, and wrap it in newspaper or use acooler bag or cool box to transport it.

Store it in the freezer compartment assoon as possible.

Never refreeze partially or fullydefrosted food. Consume defrostedfood as soon as possible as it willspoil if left for too long. Defrostedfood may only be refrozen after it hasbeen cooked.

Home freezing

Only freeze food which is fresh andin good condition.

Tips on home freezing

– The following types of food aresuitable for freezing:Fresh meat, poultry, game, fish, vegetables, herbs, fresh fruit, dairyproducts, pastry, leftovers, egg yolks, egg whites and a range of pre-cooked meals.

– The following types of food are notsuitable for freezing:Grapes, lettuce, radishes, sourcream, mayonnaise, eggs in theirshells, onions, whole raw apples andpears.

– To retain colour, taste and vitamin C,vegetables should be blanchedbefore freezing. To blanch, immersethe trimmed and washed vegetablesin boiling water for 2-3 minutes.Remove and plunge into ice-coldwater to cool quickly. Drain and packready for freezing.

– Lean meat freezes better than fattymeat and can be stored forconsiderably longer.

– Separate chops, steaks, cutlets, schnitzel or rolled meat with a sheetof plastic freezer film. This preventsthem from freezing together in ablock.

– Do not season fresh foods orblanched vegetables before freezing.Only season cooked food lightlybefore freezing. The taste or intensityof some spices alters when frozen.

– Allow hot foods and drinks to cooldown before placing them in thefreezer. Placing hot foods or drinks inthe freezer causes food that isalready frozen to partially thaw andincreases energy consumption.

Packaging food for freezing

Freeze food in portions.

Suitable packing material

– Plastic cling wrap

– Tubular polyethylene film

– Aluminum foil

– Freezer containers and bags

Unsuitable packing material

– Wrapping paper

– Grease-proof paper

– Cellophane

– Bin bags

– Plastic shopping bags

Expel as much air as possible frombags etc. before sealing them toprevent freezer burn on food.

Close the packaging tightly with

– rubber bands

– plastic clips

– string or bag ties

– freezer tape

Useful tip: Freezer bags may also besealed using home heat sealing kits.

Make a note of the contents and thedate of freezing on the packaging.

Before placing food in the freezer

When freezing more than 2 kg offresh food, switch on the SuperFeezefunction for some time before placingfood in the freezer (see “UsingSuperCool and SuperFreeze”). Thishelps food which is already stored inthe freezer to remain frozen.

Placing food in the freezer

The following maximum loadingweights must not be exceeded: – Freezer drawer = 25 kg– Glass shelf = 35 kg

Unfrozen food should not touchfrozen food as this will cause frozenfood to begin to thaw.

Make sure that the packaging andcontainers are dry to prevent themsticking together when frozen.

- Freezing small items

Freeze small items in the upper freezerdrawers.

Place the food flat in the bottom ofthe freezer drawer so that it freezesthrough to the core as quickly aspossible.

- Freezing the maximum amount

Ensure ventilation slots at the backof the freezer section are always freefrom obstruction. If the ventilation slots are blocked thecooling performance will decreaseand energy consumption willincrease.Place food on the glass plate in sucha way that the ventilation slots arenot blocked.

Please note that when removing thedrawers, the lowest freezer drawermust always remain in the freezer.

Remove the upper freezer drawers.

Place the food flat on the upper glasscold plates so that it freezes throughto the core as quickly as possible.

After the initial freezing process:

Place the frozen food in the freezerdrawer and push it back in.

Storage time for frozen food

The storage life of food is very variable, even at a constant temperature of-18 °C. Decomposition processes alsotake place in frozen food, albeit at avery reduced speed. For example fatcan become rancid from contact withoxygen in the air. This is why lean meatcan be stored approx. twice as long asfatty meat.

The storage times quoted are guidevalues for the storage life of differentfood groups in the freezer section.

Food group Storagetime(months)

Ice cream 2 - 6

Bread, baked goods 2 - 6

Cheese 2 - 4

Fish, oily 1 - 2

Fish, lean 1 - 5

Sausage, ham 1 - 3

Game, pork 1 - 12

Poultry, beef 2 - 10

Vegetables and fruit 6 - 18

Herbs 6 - 10

Where the storage time given on thepackaging differs, follow the advice onthe packaging.

Defrosting frozen food

Frozen food can be defrosted indifferent ways:

– in a microwave oven

– in an oven using “Fan Heat” or the“Defrost” setting

– at room temperature

– in the refrigerator section (the coldgiven off by the frozen food helps tokeep the other food cold)

– in a steam oven

Flat pieces of partially defrosted fishcan be placed directly into a hot fryingpan.

Thicker pieces of meat and fish (e.g.minced beef, chicken, fish fillet) shouldnot come into contact with other foodwhen defrosting. Collect the defrostingliquid and then pour it away, makingsure you wash the container it was in,the sink and your hands.

Fruit should be defrosted at roomtemperature in its packaging, or in acovered bowl.

Most vegetables can be cooked whilestill frozen. Just put straight into boilingwater or hot fat. The cooking time isslightly less than that of freshvegetables due to changes in the cellstructure.

Never refreeze partially or fullydefrosted food. Defrosted food mayonly be refrozen after it has beencooked.

Adjusting the interior fittings

Removing the drawers and glassplates from the freezer

The drawers can be removed for filling, emptying or cleaning purposes.

You can also use the space in thefreezer more flexibly. If you wish tofreeze large items such as a turkey orgame, the glass cold plates betweenthe drawers can be removed.

Pull out the drawers as far as they willgo, and then lift them up and out.

Lift the glass plate slightly, pull itforwards and out.

Using accessories

Cool pack

The cool pack prevents the temperaturein the freezer rising too quickly in theevent of a power cut, thus extendingthe time for which food can be storedwithout power to the appliance.

Place the cool pack in the top drawerof the freezer section.

The cool pack will be at its mosteffective after it has been in the freezerfor approx. 24 hours.

In the event of a power cut:

Place the cool pack directly on top ofthe frozen food in the front of the topdrawer so that the food will be keptcold for as long as possible.

Useful tip: When placing fresh food inthe freezer, use the cool pack toseparate the fresh food from the foodwhich is already frozen so that thefrozen food does not begin to thaw.

Useful tip: The cool pack can also beused in a cool bag to keep food ordrinks cool for a short period of time.
