OpenVPN Certificate installation procedure for Windows 10 – IBM WW demos The OpenVPN code will open an IP tunnel to access to the IBM Demo Center infrastructure based in
Montpellier, France.
The OpenVPN certificate allows access to the IP addresses or private subnets required for your demos
during the demo booking timeframe. The certificate is valid for one year but the access to the specific
hardware is only valid for the time booked for the demo, with a pre and post buffering window.
We recommend installing the OpenVPN GUI software from https://openvpn.net, but you can choose
another one.
Steps:
1. First install the OpenVPN software. You only need to do this one time.
2. Once OpenVPN software is installed, start the OpenVPN Client GUI with Administrator rights
(Run as Administrator). This permission is required because OpenVPN needs to add routes on
your machine during the connection. If you don't have admin access, please review the
following how-to article:
http://openvpn.se/files/howto/openvpn-howto_run_openvpn_as_nonadmin.html
3. Download & install your openvpn certificate using the link to your demo account profile page
provided in the email. You must do this the first time and the booking email will notify you if it’s
necessary to download again. Usually, the certificate will be good for a year, but always confirm
with the booking email. Your current certificate can be downloaded any time (if you misplace
it) from your “profile page” on the IBM WW Demo Portal.
4. Once downloaded, you must unzip the certificate file on a temporary folder and run ‘install.bat’
to copy the configuration file to the correct directory. Do not run the install.bat script from
inside the ZIP file, it will not work.
5. A certificate cannot be shared: only one is allowed in use at a time to avoid IP conflicts. Please
do not distribute the same certificate to different people.
6. A certificate can be used 4 hours before your demo booking and up to 9 hours after the end of
the booking, if a successive booking has not RESET the platform! This is only referring to the IP
tunnels… For example, if you booked a demo for 2 PM-5 PM, you’ll be able to validate the
connection starting at 10 AM.
7. You must connect to the OpenVPN network before running your demo; and you should
disconnect when your demo is completed.
8. Coming soon: You will be able to test the connection before your demo slot, to access to the
Montpellier’s infrastructure, on a specific web page. This page will be updated when this
function is available.
1. Install the OpenVPN software For Windows We suggest downloading code from this site, but any other existing OpenVPN software can be used
https://openvpn.net
2. Installing an OpenVPN certificate for the IBM WW Demos (assuming the OpenVPN GUI software is already installed, and started with administrative right)
Download the certificate from the WW demo portal, or follow the link provided in the booking email:
http://www.ibm.com/systems/clientcenterdemonstrations
Once downloaded, unzip the file. In the following example, it has been extracted on
C:\Data\InstallingOpenVPN:
The install.bat will install the certificate DcUsernnnn_YYYYMMDDhhmmss.psscopenvpn where nnnn=
your User N°, and YYYMMDD… = date of the certificate.
On my W10, I got this window: ➔ select “more info”
➔ select Run, and at the prompt, answer YES to run the install.bat
3. Connecting using the certificate Once the OpenVPN is started (with administrative authority), you get this locked screen icon like below.
PS: screenshots from a Windows 10.
Right click on the OpenVPN GUI icon (should be w/o color):
This will display your different certificates (you can have several certificates for different
platforms). If you have only one certificate, just select “connect”.
Remember you need to be in the correct time slot to test your connection: 4hours before
and up to 9hours after!!
Otherwise, it will fail (see next page)
you’ll see the AUTHENTICATION failure:
When you’re in the correct time slot, the connection should succeed, and you’ll see this message:
You can ping the IP address for the chosen demo, or connect, using a RDP or browser, depending on the
demo.
When demo is completed, then disconnect:
