FOR THE RECORD—A club-record 4 non-roster invites made the Rays Opening Day roster: OF Peter Bourjos, RH Tommy Hunter, C Jesús Su-cre and INF Rickie Weeks Jr. …previous record was 3, three times:

Ê 2003: OF Rocco Baldelli, LH Jim Parque, RH Steve Parris Ê 2006: RH Jason Childers, RH Ruddy Lugo, INF Luis Ordaz Ê 2007: RH Gary Glover, 1B Carlos Peña, RH Al Reyes

MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUTS—INF Daniel Robertson and RH Austin Pruitt will be making their major league debuts…the last time the Rays had two players make their Opening Day roster with no major league service time was 2007, when OF Elijah Dukes and INF Akinori Iwamura made it.

FOR STARTERS—Among the notes from today’s starting lineup: Corey Dick-erson will become the second DH in franchise history to bat leadoff on Open-ing Day, following John Jaso in 2015…prior to Jaso, it hadn’t been done in the majors since TEX Frank Catalanotto and TOR Shannon Stewart in 2002…CF Kevin Kiermaier will bat second, where he posted a .350 OBP in 52 games (50 starts) to end last year…3B Evan Longo-ria will make his ninth Opening Day start, surpassing Carl Crawford for most in club history (see the note below)… LF Mallex Smith and C Derek Norris will be making their Rays debuts.

LONGO THE NEW LEADER—3B Evan Longoria will be making his ninth Opening Day start (2009-17), surpassing OF Carl Crawford (2003-10) for the most in franchise history…only two other players enter the 2017 sea-son with as many consecutive Opening Day starts at 3B as Longoria (8): Adrian Beltre (15) and David Wright (12)…Beltre is starting the season on the DL (tight right calf muscle) and Wright is questionable to be ready for Mets Opening Day with a right shoulder impingement.

Ê Evan is also the Rays all-time leader in Opening Day hits (11) and home runs (3)…he owns a .355 (11-for-31) avg. on Opening Day.

Ê Besides Longoria, only nine other players have a chance to make a ninth consecutive Opening Day start (2009-17) for the same team: WAS Ryan Zimmerman, NYM David Wright, CIN Joey Votto, BOS Dustin Pedroia, STL Yadier Molina, BAL Adam Jones, DET Miguel Cabrera, MIL Ryan Braun and TEX Elvis Andrus.

RAYS vs. YANKEES—Opening Day will be the first of 19 meetings be-tween the Rays and Yankees (9 in St. Petersburg, 10 in New York)…this will be the fourth time the Rays have played the Yankees on Opening Day (2-1; see chart on Page 1)…it will also be the fourth time the Rays have hosted the Yankees in their home opener (3-0, with wins in 2004, 2009, 2012)…the Rays travel to the Bronx to play in New York’s home opener on Monday, April 10…the Rays went 8-11 against the Yankees in 2016 (5-4 at home, 3-7 on the road)…they slugged 37 HR, the most ever hit against New York in one season…they also hit 22 HR at Yankee Stadium, most ever by an opponent in the Bronx in either the new or original Yankee Stadium.

Ê The Rays went 1-2-1 vs. the Yankees in Grapefruit League action. Ê Since 2010, the Rays are the only AL team with a winning record

against the Yankees (67-63, .515)…prior to that, they were 69-133 (.342) in their first 12 seasons (1998–2009).

FROM THE OTHER SIDE—The Rays are facing RH Masahiro Tanaka to-day…in his final start last season, on Sep 21 at Tropicana Field, he yielded a career-high 4 HR, all in the 3rd inning…it was a club record for an inning by the Rays…Evan Longoria, Brad Miller and Corey Dickerson hit back-to-back-to-back homers, the third time in franchise history the Rays did that, following June 24, 2013 vs. TOR (James Loney, Wil Myers, Sam Fuld) and June 9, 2008 at LAA (Longoria, Willy Aybar, Dioner Navarro).

CHALLENGED EARLY—The Rays first 14 games are against AL East ri-vals New York, Toronto and Boston…in the month of April, the Rays will play 26 games—all against opponents who finished 2016 above .500…through May 21, only 4 of the Rays first 46 games are against teams that finished 2016 below .500, a home-and-home series with the Marlins from May 1-4…they have only one off-day in the month of May.

CASH YOUNGEST AGAIN—For the third consecutive Opening Day, Man-ager Kevin Cash (39 years, 117 days) is the majors’ youngest manager…he edges out San Diego’s sophomore skipper Andy Green by almost five months…in 2016, there were 18 players in the majors who were older than Cash…Cash’s 148-176 (.457) record is 15 games better than any previous Rays manager after their first two seasons…Lou Piniella was 133-190, Larry Rothschild was 132-192 and Joe Maddon was 127-197.

THREE STRAIGHT FOR ARCH—RH Chris Archer will make his third con-secutive Opening Day start, joining RH James Shields (2008-10) as the only Rays pitchers to do so…Shields also earned a fourth Opening Day nod in 2012…Archer, Shields and LH David Price (2011, 2013-14) are the only Rays pitchers to make three Opening Day starts…Archer’s Opening Day nod means he will throw the first pitch of Major League Baseball’s 2017 season…the only other Ray to do that was RH Victor Zambrano, a called strike to Derek Jeter on March 30, 2004 from the Toyko Dome (at 7:14 p.m. local time and 6:14 a.m. EST).

BEHIND THE PLATE—The Rays added two All-Star catchers to their 40-man roster this offseason, signed 3½ months apart…Wilson Ramos signed on Dec 12, 2016 after making the NL All-Star Team last season, establishing career highs in several categories including games (131), runs (58), hits (148), doubles (25), home runs (22), RBI (80), avg. (.307) and SLG (.496)…Derek Norris was signed on March 26 and was an AL All-Star for the Oakland A’s in 2014…he spent the last two seasons with the San Diego Padres, each year hitting a career-high 14 HR.

NEVER TOO EARLY FOR STREAKING—Today’s start by 28-year-old RH Chris Archer will mark the 15th consecutive season that the Rays Opening Day starter will be 30 years old or younger…no other major league club can make that claim…in fact, the only Opening Day starter age 31 or older in franchise history was 31-year-old RH Tanyon Sturtze in 2002.

Ê This will also be the 399th consecutive Rays game started by a pitch-er under the age of 30, the longest current streak in the majors…35-year-old LH Erik Bedard on July 3, 2014 at DET was the last time a 30-plus pitcher started a game for the Rays…including this season’s Opening Day, since June 26, 2006, the Rays have started a pitcher under the age of 30 in 1,634 of their last 1,708 games (96 pct.) including a streak of 764 consecutive games over 2007-11.

Ê INF Tim Beckham enters the season with a career-long 10-game hitting streak intact…he’s batting .429 (15-for-35) during the stretch.

Ê OF Corey Dickerson is one of four players to homer on each of the past two Opening Days, along with WAS Bryce Harper, COL Nolan Arenado and BOS Mookie Betts…and for the record, the last play-ers to homer in three consecutive Opening Day games were TOR Adam Lind and DET/NYY Curtis Granderson in 2009-11.

Ê The Rays haven’t hit a walk-off home run since May 22, 2014 vs. OAK (Sean Rodriguez), longest drought in the majors…during that span, they have allowed 11 walk-off HR.

FOLEY THE RAYS ALL-TIME LEADER—Rays bench coach Tom Foley is wearing a Rays uniform for his 16th Opening Day, most in club history…it is his 27th Opening Day overall, including 11 as a player with the Reds (1983-85), Expos (1987-92) and Pirates (1993-94).

LAST YEAR’S OPENER—Despite a 5-3 home loss to Toronto in the 2016 season opener, Rays pitchers tallied 16 SO to tie the modern major league record for a 9-inning Opening Day game, according to the Elias Sports Bu-reau…the Mets also turned the trick on April 4, 2005 at CIN.

OPENING DAY ODDITIES—Other miscellaneous Opening Day facts: Ê In 19 Opening Day games, the Rays have used 17 players at DH. Ê The Rays have outscored their opponents 19-3 in the 9th inning. Ê The Rays have never played an extra-inning game, but have won

three games in the bottom of the 9th inning (2003, 2010, 2012). Ê RH Victor Zambrano is the only Ray with two Opening Day wins

(2002 in relief, 2004 as a starter)…he remains the only pitcher to do record an Opening Day win as a starter and out of the bullpen since CWS LaMarr Hoyt (1981 in relief, 1984 as a starter) and DET Mickey Lolich (1965, 1966, 1970-72 as a starter, 1978 in relief).

Ê In their history, the Rays have hit .285 (187-for-655) on Opening Day, have averaged 5.4 runs per game (103 runs in 19 games) and have never been shut out…only six teams have longer current streaks without being shut out on Opening Day.

2017 SPRING TRAINING RUNDOWNSLICE OF GRAPEFRUIT—The Rays finished the spring at 12-16-5, failing to reach 15 wins for a second consecutive season after doing so in 7 of the 8 pre-vious seasons from 2008-15…they went 8-15-4 over their last 27 games and 1-7-3 over their last 11 games…because of a longer spring training due to the World Baseball Classic, the Rays played 33 games, their most since 2013 (club-re-cord 34)…including their March 8 exhibi-tion against Colombia’s WBC team, the Rays welcomed 81,752 fans to Charlotte Sports Park, their most attended spring training since 2013 (90,935)…the Rays finished the spring with 5 ties, 2nd most in franchise history to 2012 (6)…they went the entire spring without a rainout, first time doing that since 2012.

SPRING STATS—The Rays pitching staff ranked 5th in the majors and 4th in the Grapefruit League with a 4.10 ERA (289.2-IP, 132-ER)…Rays pitchers ranked among the majors’ top ten in opp avg. (.251, 5th), WHIP (1.34, 9th), SO (276, 10th) and shutouts (2, tied for 5th)…the offense scored 172 runs and hit 37 HR, both their most since 2010 (194 runs, 37 HR)…the Rays made a major-league-most 42 errors, their most since MLB Advanced Media data is available (2006)…the Rays had a .965 fielding pct., the second straight season they finished last in the Grapefruit League in fielding pct.

FOR THE RECORD—On Feb 28 vs. MIN, the Rays 19-0 win set franchise records for runs scored and margin of victory in spring training, and their 23 hits were their most since MLB Advanced Media data is available (2006)…just two days later, the Rays 19-2 loss on March 2 at BOS was their worst spring loss in club history…on March 4 vs. BAL, the staff’s 16 SO set a sin-gle-game franchise record since data is available (2006)…the Rays were shut out 3 times, matching 2003 for the most in club history.

OPENING DAY STARTER—RH CHRIS ARCHER (9-19, 4.02 in 2016)

Ê THE LID-LIFTER—Will be making his third consecutive Opening Day start, joining RH James Shields (2008-10) as the only Rays pitchers to do so…Shields also earned a fourth Opening Day nod in 2012…Archer, Shields and LH David Price (2011, 2013-14) are the only Rays to make three Opening Day starts…he is 0-2 with a 4.22 ERA (10.2-IP, 5-ER) in his two prior Opening Day starts (2016 vs. TOR, 2015 vs. BAL).

Ê Archer was named the Rays Opening Day starter on March 23 by Manager Kevin Cash…this will mark the 15th consecutive season that the Rays Opening Day starter will be 30 years old or younger…no other major league club can make that claim.

Ê Will be throwing the first pitch of Major League Baseball’s 2017 season…the only other Ray to ever do that was RH Victor Zam-brano, a called strike to Derek Jeter on March 30, 2004 from the Toyko Dome (at 7:14 p.m. local time and 6:14 a.m. EST).

Ê ONE YEAR AGO—On Opening Day 2016 vs. TOR, his 12 SO were a club record for Opening Day and the most in the majors on Opening Day since SEA Felix Hernandez in 2007…was the fourth pitcher since Baseball Reference data is available (1913) to record 12 SO (or more) and lose, joining STL Bob Gibson (1975 vs. MTL), CIN Gary Nolan (1969 vs. LAD) and ATL Tony Cloninger (1966 vs. PIT)…the year prior, took the loss on Opening Day vs. BAL…in both of his Opening Day starts, allowed run(s) in the top of the 1st and the Rays never led.

Ê ON AND OFF—Was 5-0 with a 1.78 ERA (55.2-IP, 11-ER) in his first 8 career starts against the Yankees (June 23, 2013–July 3, 2015)…since then, has gone 0-5 with a 4.05 ERA (33.1-IP, 15-ER) in 5 starts…he and RH James Shields (Sep 22, 2006–May 14, 2008) are the only Rays to lose 5 straight starts against the Yankees, and his streak of 5 straight losing decisions is the 2nd longest in franchise history to Shields (6, July 30, 2006–May 14, 2008)…OF Jacoby Ellsbury is batting .559 (19-for-34) in his career off Archer…Ellsbury’s 19 hits and .559 avg. are the most of any active player (min. 20 AB) off Archer.

Ê SPRING THINGS—Went 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA (13.2-IP, 3-ER) in 4 official Grapefruit League starts…left the Rays on March 6 to join the United States for the World Baseball Classic…started USA’s opening game on March 10 vs. Colombia and retired all 12 BF on 41 pitches (30 strikes)…pitched in a minor league game against the Twins on March 16…stretched out to 91 pitches in a night game at March 22 at BAL.

Ê STRIKEOUTS—His 233 SO last season tied CWS Chris Sale for 2nd in the AL behind DET Justin Verlander (246)…over the last two sea-sons, his 485 SO are tied for 3rd in the majors to WAS Max Scherzer

(560) and Sale (507)…in 2016, opponents hit .200 (78-for-390) with a major-league-leading 152 SO in at-bats ending with the slider.

Ê SEVERE SPLITS—Last season he went 3-10 at home, but led the AL with a 2.65 ERA (102-IP, 30-ER)…received the lowest run support in the majors at home at 2.12 R/9 IP…his 10 losses set a club record, passing David Price (9) in 2011 and Rolando Arrojo (9) in 1999…on the road, his 5.44 ERA (99.1-IP, 60-ER) was 5th highest in the AL but received 6.34 R/9 IP in run support, 9th highest in the AL.

Ê MR. DURABLE—Since the day he was called up for good (June 1, 2013), his 122 starts rank 2nd in the majors, just one shy of former teammate James Shields…in 2016, he became the fourth Rays pitch-er to record back-to-back seasons of 200 IP, joining Shields (6 straight, 2007-12), David Price (3 straight, 2010-12) and Matt Garza (2009-10).

Ê 2016 IN REVIEW—His 19 losses led the AL and tied SD/CWS James Shields for most in the majors…prior to 2016, no major league pitcher had 19 losses (or more) since KC Darrell May in 2004 (19)…broke RH Tanyon Sturtze’s club record of 18 losses (2002)…they were also the most losses by a pitcher who was an All-Star the season prior since ATL Phil Niekro (20) in 1979…his combination of strikeouts (233) and loss-es (19) was reached by only three other pitchers in AL history, all Hall of Famers: CLE Gaylord Perry in 1973 (238-SO, 19-L), CWS Ed Walsh in 1916 (258-SO, 20-L) and PHI-AL Rube Waddell (349-SO, 19-L).

Ê K’S FOR KIDS—Every strikeout he records will benefit the local non-profit Starting Right, Now…for every strikeout, he and the Rays Base-ball Foundation will each donate $25…Starting Right, Now combats homelessness for youth through one-on-one mentoring, providing a stable home, obtaining employment, teaching financial literacy/life skills and promoting educational achievement…fans can also make a pledge by visiting raysbaseball.com/archer…over the last two sea-sons, his 485 SO raised more than $35,000, which was split between Burg Baseball Inc. and Tampa RBI.

Ê April 3, 2001 (Home)—Tampa Bay 8, Toronto 1: Albie Lopez had what remains the longest outing ever by a Rays starter on Opening Day (8-IP, 7-H, 1-ER, 3-BB, 6-SO)…every Rays player with an at-bat got a hit, including Randy Winn’s 8th-inning pinch-hit homer, the Rays first on Opening Day.

Ê April 2, 2002 (Home)—Tampa Bay 9, Detroit 5: The Rays trailed 5-3 in the 6th before Steve Cox’s bases-loaded single tied it and Greg Vaughn’s RBI single in the 8th gave the Rays a lead…Bobby Smith added a key bases-loaded double later in the Rays 4-run 8th…Victor Zambrano earned the first of his two Opening Day wins, this one with only 0.2 IP out of the bullpen.

Ê March 31, 2003 (Home)—Tampa Bay 6, Boston 4: Carl Crawford’s 2-out, 2-strike, 3-run walk-off homer off Chad Fox in the 9th gave the Rays a 6-4 win…it was the eighth walk-off homer on Opening Day in AL history…Seth McClung got the win in his major league debut…the Rays trailed 4-0 entering the 7th and 4-1 entering the 9th…Terry Shumpert became the third Ray to homer in his first at-bat, a 2-run pinch-hit homer in the 9th that brought the Rays to within 4-3.

Ê April 4, 2005 (Home)—Toronto 5, Tampa Bay 2: The Rays 5-game Opening Day winning streak was snapped…starter Dewon Brazelton allowed only 3 hits in 7 IP, but they came consecutively in the 4th: a double by Frank Catalanotto, then home runs by Orlando Hudson and Vernon Wells…the Rays out-hit the Jays, 10-7, but Toronto had 5 extra-base hits and the Rays none.

Ê April 3, 2006 (Road)—Baltimore 9, Tampa Bay 6: 22-year-old Scott Kazmir be-came the youngest Opening Day starting pitcher since Dwight Gooden in 1986, but yielded home runs to Luis Matos, Miguel Tejada and Melvin Mora over 4 IP to take the loss…the Rays used three shortstops as Julio Lugo (abdominal muscle) and Luis Ordaz (knee) were both injured…the Rays led 4-3 in the 5th before Matos and Mora hit back-to-back homers leading off the inning.

Ê April 6, 2010 (Home)—Tampa Bay 4, Baltimore 3: Carl Crawford’s 1-out, 2-run double in the 9th off Mike Gonzalez gave the Rays their second walk-off win on Opening Day…to set up Crawford’s heroics, Sean Rodriguez had a 1-out single, Kelly Shoppach doubled in his first plate app as a Ray and Jason Bartlett received his only intentional walk of the season…previously, Evan Longoria blasted a 6th-inning, 473-foot homer off Kevin Millwood to bring the Rays to within 3-2.
