Open GLAM WorkshopCreative Commons Global Summit
15th September 2011
What is Open GLAM?
GalleriesLibrariesArchivesMuseums
a slogan, a coalition, a working consortium
Two main areas...
1. Open ContentOpen digital copies of works
which have entered the public domain.
2. Open DataOpen data about works, e.g. catalogues or databases of
descriptions.
“A global network of people and organisations who are
working to open up content and data held by
GLAM institutions.”
Open GLAM will
"Support principles, tools and resources that enable GLAM institutions
to make digital versions of the PD works in their collections, as well as the metadata relating to said works,
freely available for public use and re-use"
Who?
We want to build a strong coalition between people
and organisations who are already doing great work in
this area.
What was
covered?
•Quick draft of rough Open GLAM vision statement & principles (need review)
•Brainstorm Incentives & Barriers
•Brainstorm case studies
•Brainstorm next steps...
• GLAM institutions must be enabled to fulfil their traditional function in the online environment for the sustainability of the access to digitised cultural heritage.
• GLAM institutions can engage with the public as partners through participation, collaboration and interaction (abandon the top down control paradigm) and seek opportunities for public to recognising the value of access ...
• Digital reproductions of works that are in the Public Domain must also belong to the Public Domain. Use of works in the public domain should not be limited by any means, either legal or technical. (Communia Recommendation #5 targets Glam institutions, no intention to have a viral effect on works incorporating PD pieces)
• Digitisation projects that receive public funding must - at the minimum - ensure that all digitised content is publicly available online.
The Principles (Draft)
How?
Long term goals
- identify / conduct concrete research about costs / benefits to GLAM institutions- create Creative Commons course for GLAM- support / develop most relevant licensing terms- consider supporting national GLAM representatives with legal training- encourage people create games / apps to show usefulness of releasing information- support links with newspapers, magazines who will promote work
Short term plan: (here’s where you come in!)

- Look into developing discussion with Cultural Partners list @ Wikimedia (currently closed list) - use openglam.org to collate info,
- add Mediawiki element to allow contributions- Create leaflets to distribute to GLAM institutions, encouraging participation in working meetings & events- Conference call / Skype meetup (mid-October)- GLAM meeting @ogdcamp? http://ogdcamp.org- Hire Open Data Evangelist...
EVENTS- Many Open GLAM events already exist. Should be harnessed.- Should encourage pro-active participation in:
- GLAMcamp - Educational Events - Large Library conferences - European Science Open Forum- National events
- Open GLAM should encourage more:- ‘working meetings’ e.g satellite events at Wikimania, OKCon CCSummit
- in long term, more larger events - e.g. Open GLAM festival - e.g. Exhibitions featuring derivative works
