Ely Culture Night

22 July 2011, 6pm-10pm Free To mark the Cultural Olympiad weekend, Ely is opening its doors on Friday 22nd July. All of the visitor attractions are opening free of charge from 6 to 9pm so that residents and visi-tors alike can experience the atmospheric buildings at dusk. Many are offering additional tours and activities. As well as the visitors attractions, many of the churches, public buildings and some busi-nesses are jumping on board and marking the event in a variety of ways. Music and theatre play a part in celebrating Ely’s Culture and a range of talents will be performing in numerous locations. The evening will see the launch of Ely Tales – a new tourist, walking trail based around the established Eel Trail which is a way-marked route taking you past all the key places of this beautiful city. On route there will be a variety of costumed characters such as the Stone Mason and Eel Catcher who will be on hand to tell you how they shaped Ely’s history. The evening culminates in a Riverside Party in Jubilee Gar-dens from 8 pm to 10 pm with a BBQ and musi-cal entertainment in the bandstand. At 10 pm the finale turns Ely Pink – with a vari-ety of buildings being lit pink to mark the col-ours of the Cultural Olympiad. Cambridgeshire Competes: collections come together for London 2012

This exciting project will be launched in July 2011 and sees an Olympic exhibition trail running from June 2012, through the Para-lympics (September 2012) until December 2012. Memory collecting days where we invite Cambridgeshire and Peterborough resi-dents to contribute by sharing their hidden histories as: spectators in the past during the Games plus provide memories of their sporting heroes.
