MEET THE SPEAKER Rabbi Eric Wisnia “Lincoln and the Jews” March 15, 2016 Hamilton Free Public Library 2:00 PM Rabbi Eric Wisnia of Congregation Beth Chiam, West Windsor, an avid Civil War buff, will speak on “Lincoln and the Jews”.

Our wonderful Study Group Committee is always open to suggestions for new and exciting ideas. If you have knowledge of a subject and would like to share it with our membership please contact either of us and we’ll be sure it gets to the right person. Hoping your winter is short and mild. Helen Ciangiulli Claire Heller Co-Presidents

Dear Friends, We hope that you all had a wonderful summer and early fall. As we head into the dark days of winter, you will find that our bulletin has many bright spots for you. From Lunch and Learns to interesting films to a museum visit in late March, we think you’ll find that this bulletin will liven up your winter. Our Chapter won an award this year for lowest expense/income ratio in the Region. BNC has launched a new Scholarship Campaign. Since its inception in 1948, the Brandeis National Committee has worked with Brandeis to support University initiatives. Today, increasing funding for scholarship assistance for students is Brandeis’ top priority. As higher education costs continue to climb, today’s students have a greater need for financial assistance. About 2 in every 3 Brandeis students receive some form of financial aid. Over the course of our Presidency we will explore options for raising funds for this Campaign. Please remember you may order tributes and condolence cards from our BNC book fund. Contact Rona Altman or Freda Pollack. Their numbers are under Tribute Cards in the bulletin.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT This year, after working with Homefront for the past several years, our Tri-County chapter decided to take on a new community service project. We heard about the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen through Elaine Szul. She told us that she and her friends have been making back packs for these children for some time now, filled with items such as pens, pencils, highlighters, crayons, notebooks, scissors, glue, etc. Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen is located on Perry Street in center city, Trenton, and it is in a very economically depressed area. These children are in desperate need of these school supplies. With typical Brandeis dedication, our members worked individually or in groups, and we donated over twenty filled back packs to these children. I would like to thank everyone who worked on this project. Let’s hope that these school supplies will help the children have a good start in the school year ahead.

TOY DRIVE

For the next phase of our community service project, we will now be initiating a toy drive for the same children who are connected to the Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen in Trenton for whom we collected backpacks. We need new, unwrapped toys for children from infancy through thirteen years of age, with an emphasis on the younger children. It was suggested to me by Elaine Szul that if you were to buy a baby doll to make it a black one as the children we are giving these dolls would better identify with a black doll. In FSUF, you should drop off the toys at the home of Elaine Szul, 14 Georgetown Court. In Village Grande, Sharon Sternbach at 107 Rainflower Lane has graciously offered to be the drop off point. Also, all members can drop toys off at any of our study groups, book club meetings or any other Brandeis event. If I am in attendance, I will take the toys. If I’m not there, I would need someone to take them to their home for me and I will then pick them up from there. TOY DRIVE DROP-OFF DEADLINE IS MONDAY, DECEMBER 14th. I do so appreciate, in advance, your help and generosity with this project and look forward to making this a very successful toy drive. These children desperately need our help. Thank you. Book Club: The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman “Growing up on idyllic St. Thomas in the early 1800s, Rachel dreams of life in faraway Paris. Rachel’s mother, a pillar of their small refugee community of Jews who escaped the Inquisition, has never forgiven her daughter for being a difficult girl who refuses to live by the rules. Growing up, Rachel’s salvation is their maid Adelle’s belief in her strengths, and her deep, life-long friendship with Jestine, Adelle’s daughter. But Rachel’s life is not her own. She is married off to a widower with three children to save her father’s business. When her husband dies suddenly and his handsome, much younger nephew, Frédérick, arrives from France to settle the estate, Rachel seizes her own life story, beginning a defiant, passionate love affair that sparks a scandal that affects all of her family, including her favorite son, who will become one of the greatest artists of France.” (Camille Pissarro

Art & Architecture: Edgar Degas The Impressionist “Best known for his (often asymmetrical) paintings of ballerinas, racecourses and café life, French artist Edgar Degas worked in a variety of mediums, including bronze sculpture. His innovative insight into movement and the harmony of line and contour made him stand out from other 19th century Impressionist painters. This fascinating documentary explores Degas' life and works, with art experts providing analysis of his oeuvre.” Elaine Citron, a watercolor painter, will lead the discussion
