Having recently moved here from Ecuador, I cannot make comparison with previous years as to whether or not this was unusual. All I know is that I am thankful for air-conditioning. There is an old Hymn entitled “Count Your Blessings.” Often, we focus on the major events or people in our life when counting our blessings. What about those things that may not make the “A-list” but for which we are still thankful? My wife, Suleyka, is helping me learn in a fresh, new way that God has given us many blessings, which we, at times, over look. I am literally fascinated with how much enjoyment Suleyka is experiencing just from watching the birds and squirrels, and even the trees when we travel When we first arrived in the USA, we stayed two weeks with close friends, Clyde and Judy Miller in Pentwater. Everything was new for Suleyka. Our friends have bird feeders and live in a heavily wooded area – lots of birds and squirrels and other creatures. Arriving in Paw Paw, we had the privilege of staying several weeks with Dr. David Millard. He, too, has bird feeders and lives in a heavily wooded area – lots of birds and squirrels; plus, an added bonus of a peacock (a female, which I guess is a ‘pea-hen’) (PS – Dr. Millard has named this lovely creature Lucy) Suleyka was again fascinated and could not stop saying how much she enjoyed these creatures and how thankful she was to be staying where we were. She took time to just wander in the yard taking photos to send to her family in Ecuador. Suleyka prays often and, she and I pray together often as well. Many times now I have heard her give thanks for birds, squirrels and even Lucy, along with giving thanks for her family in Ecuador; and now, for her new family – Clyde & Judy, Dr. Millard and the people of Paw Paw UMC. (Not to be compared with squirrels or birds!!) My encouragement is that we not forget to give thanks – not just for those important people and events in our life –but also for the many, many blessings we may have overlooked – such as birds, squirrels, trees and yes, even air-conditioning and ‘pea-hens.’ Have you counted your blessings today? All of them? Pastor David

Counting the Birds and Squirrels

July was, for me, a very hot month. Having recently moved here from Ecuador, I cannot make

comparison with previous years as to whether or not this was unusual. All I know is that I am

thankful for air-conditioning. There is an old Hymn entitled “Count Your Blessings.” Often, we

focus on the major events or people in our life when counting our blessings. What about those

things that may not make the “A-list” but for which we are still thankful?

My wife, Suleyka, is helping me learn in a fresh, new way that God has given us many blessings,

which we, at times, over look. I am literally fascinated with how much enjoyment Suleyka is

experiencing just from watching the birds and squirrels, and even the trees when we travel

When we first arrived in the USA, we stayed two weeks with close friends, Clyde and Judy Miller

in Pentwater. Everything was new for Suleyka. Our friends have bird feeders and live in a

heavily wooded area – lots of birds and squirrels and other creatures. Arriving in Paw Paw, we

had the privilege of staying several weeks with Dr. David Millard. He, too, has bird feeders and

lives in a heavily wooded area – lots of birds and squirrels; plus, an added bonus of a peacock (a

female, which I guess is a ‘pea-hen’) (PS – Dr. Millard has named this lovely creature Lucy)

Suleyka was again fascinated and could not stop saying how much she enjoyed these creatures

and how thankful she was to be staying where we were. She took time to just wander in the

yard taking photos to send to her family in Ecuador.

Suleyka prays often and, she and I pray together often as well. Many times now I have heard

her give thanks for birds, squirrels and even Lucy, along with giving thanks for her family in

Ecuador; and now, for her new family – Clyde & Judy, Dr. Millard and the people of Paw Paw

UMC. (Not to be compared with squirrels or birds!!)

My encouragement is that we not forget to give thanks – not just for those important people

and events in our life –but also for the many, many blessings we may have overlooked – such as

birds, squirrels, trees and yes, even air-conditioning and ‘pea-hens.’

Have you counted your blessings today? All of them?

Pastor David
