Context Conditions our approach to and understanding of Educational Practice, to Open Education, when I think about my context I see it as made up of:

•Our role, what we do and how we see our role, as facilitator, teacher, builder (makar) or decision maker (all overlapping•Organisational culture, “it’s what we do around here”•Personal values, what I believe the value of education is, and how I think about the role of education in creating public value.

Can you think about your own context and how it shapes your understanding of Open Education, of Digital Participation and Widening Participation? Once you have talked it through please write on a post it note.

In my Context [describe your context] I understand/think of the role of digital technology/open education/widening participation [delete as applicable] as enabling …. [Fill in the blanks]

What happens when you put two terms together?

Again can you talk through this and then write down your thoughts on post it notes, for example,

For me the role of digital technology in Open Education is … For me the role of digital technology in Widening Participation is …

When I put these words together things start to happen, start to think about tensions and dilemmas.

Putting Ideas Together

I tend end up describing a problem and stating some aspirations.

If you have an aspirational one (like me) what is it about your context that needs to change?

Again can you talk through this and then write down your thoughts on post it notes, for example

If [open education/digital technology/widening participation] is to enable [dare I say Widening Participation] then …. [Insert here what needs to change in your context] needs to change

Describe, Aspire, what about doing?

What if I do not accept the benefits of an innovation (like free open online education materials) are not shared equallyWhat if I do not accept this distribution is “normal”

Now spend some time sharing and writing down your own “What if”
