It was with great sorrow we learned just before Christmas of the sad loss of our

Committee person Mr Mal Smith. Mal had been fighting an illness for some time and unfortunately passed

away mid December. Our sincere condolences to his partner Rae and family.

On a lighter note I trust that all members and families have had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and

have enjoyed some wonderful boating days. As I am writing this report it was beautiful one day and a cold

front and rains the next. The white crayfish run before Christmas was another great one, as was predicted, with

many members out on the daily hunt and returning with, if not a bag full, certainly enough for the Christmas

feast. As expected the early morning activity at the ramps was as busy as it gets with boats both launching and

retrieving at all times during the morning from before sun up. With the new parking and directional flow for

traffic the management committee thanks members for their understanding as members reprogram their think-

ing on flows and parking. This necessitated the dedication of launch and retrieve ramps to ease congestion. At

this time a lot of visitors were crewing on member’s boats and parking inside the grounds was very hectic and

for some frustrating. This forced the requirement that visitors park outside the gates allowing members access

to the ramps and parking. Members please advise your crews of this requirement to park outside and meet

them at the gate to allow entry from this time forward.

As outlined in my previous report Vice Commodore Roy Richardson has been recruiting and now training our

Duty Officers to assist our Bosun on the predicted busy days such as long weekends and special events. They

will be easy to spot with Hi Viz shirts, club hats and name tags. Please remember that these people are fellow

members whom have volunteered their time to assist you the members to enjoy the use of the ramps, parking

and club facilities in an orderly and fair manner. Please follow their directions and carry your membership

card for identification purposes and ensure stickers and name plates are in place. Additional volunteers are al-

ways welcome and it can be a great way to get to know members and to make future friends from the club

community.

I have just returned to add to my report what a great day we had at the club this Saturday the 14th of January.

Fabulous weather, a Sport fishing competition, a Cruising Group outing and a busy bee all happening. How

fantastic to see our great facilities being fully utilized and members enjoying the day. The day had a real buzz.

If you missed it, better come down soon.

On another sadder note a private function was held in the afternoon to commemorate the life of Roberta Ken-

nington. Roberta was an avid contributor to the online CPBA chat room, volunteer and partner to the late Bob

Kennington, a life member of the Club.

With more long weekends and holidays to come this summer the Management Committee wishes all a safe

and enjoyable boating season.

Regards

All Members

Welcome

Arrived at the club around 8 am, it was great to see the volunteer Duty Officers (DO’s) in full swing. The

place was packed but that was not unexpected as it was perfect boating weather.

Roy started his DO stint at 4-30 am and was kept busy all morning. Our

roll up of volunteers for the Busy Bee was not great, but enough to

finish off smaller tasks and do a bit of touch up painting around the

building. The chart cabinet is now back in the undercroft after having

had a refreshing paint job. Brian, Karl and Mick tried their hand at

painting the electrical conduits on the west outer wall.

Leonie, after helping with preparing the morning tea, spent the rest of

the morning in the garden weeding and fertilising. With a bit of T.L.C.

the gardens are now looking great.

I polished the Club bell with instructions from Heidi to make sure it was done properly. She would not let

me finish until she could see her face in it.

Karl, a new member, very kindly supplied a tin of homemade chocolate chip biscuits. Another chef

amongst us, thank you Karl.

Vera , Di and Heidi looked after morning tea which was as usual, a nice spread.

We now have a great group of Busy Bee volunteers but we are still on the lookout for more. If you have

any spare time on our monthly Busy Bee days, you would be most welcome to join us.

General Manager’s Notes

Increased activity coupled with good weather conditions and public holidays over December/January has

resulted in pressure on our parking on peak days. We have initiated several strategies to minimize the impact

including a new parking layout with increased bays, Rules changed to preclude non-members from parking in

Club grounds and more recently, have initiated our Duty Officer section . The primary role of this section is

to assist with vehicle and pedestrian traffic movement within the Club grounds as well as conducting

important checks and reminder activities, especially on busier days. The section will also carry out

membership checks to ensure only member’s vehicles are entering our grounds.

These positive steps will help reduce parking pressure. It is timely to remind members that secure parking is a

privilege however CPBA are no different to other Clubs in that we cannot guarantee parking on peak days.

Club Caterer

I am happy to confirm that we have arranged for Creative Catering to provide food for our Club functions,

private functions and members’ meals. This is an exciting time for the Club and is the stepping stone to grow

our food and beverage service. Creative Catering who were awarded best small caterer WA in 2014 and 2015

and best small caterer nationally in 2015, launch their members meals at our Sunday Session on 5 February

and will also provide meals at our Open Day on 11 February. They provide great food at a good price. We

need your support to allow this service to grow.

Long Serving Members and Volunteers Presentation Night

We are recognizing members with 40 plus years of membership and our valuable volunteers at a joint function

on Friday 17 February. Individual invitations will be forwarded to the members involved and special medals

will be presented to our 40 and 50 year members.

Hardstand – Wash-down Area

We are organizing water to the hardstand wash-down bay and will trial a new turf-key connection system

which is successfully used at other wash-down sites including Hillarys and Ocean Reef. Under this system

members provide their own hose with a special turf key fitting which opens the water supply valve when

placed in the supply socket. We are also reviewing our main wash-down bays as the water supply and water

connection method and design requires upgrading.

Wet Pens

We are making good progress with the Department of Transport re the layout of the proposed pens and

additional power and will provide more detail when the layout and costs are finalized.

Pedestrian Gate Access

The padlocks on our pedestrian gate and the backup vehicle/trailer gate on our eastern boundary have been

upgraded from “member” to “committee access only” due to security issues arising from the high number of

gate keys not returned by resigned or struck of members. Gate toggles and air key access for resigned/struck

off members are disabled. Members who wish to park in Club grounds and walk outside our grounds can

satisfy their requirement by purchasing an air key from the Club Office. A little inconvenience is far better

than having a member’s car/trailer stolen from our grounds.

Refuelling

Please note that Club Rules have been updated to preclude members from refuelling in Club grounds both on

and off the water, which includes our pens and jetties.

New Club Sponsor

A huge welcome to our new Club Sponsor “Hook’d Up Bait ‘N’ Tackle” who have a 24/7 automated frozen

bait and tackle dispensing machine on site. Product is well priced and available 24/7.

Parking Bays – Colour Coding

Parking bays for vehicles are marked in yellow and trailer/vehicle bays marked in white.

Open Day – Saturday 11 February from 12 noon to 6pm

We are holding our annual Open Day next month which is a good opportunity to introduce your friends and

family to CPBA with a membership discount and free entry into a new members’ draw for a $600 VHF radio

donated by Taylor Marine. In addition, live entertainment, great food and our bar will be open for the day.

Come on down and check out our wedding display and displays by related services and sponsors and relax

and enjoy a quiet drink and meal whilst enjoying our live entertainment and our magic view of Cockburn

Sound. John Tissott

Volunteer Duty Officers get together for their first meeting and orientation session

In recent Club newsletters we have promoted the introduction of Duty Officers

where Club Members have been encouraged to register to periodically volunteer a

bit of their time to contribute to this

initiative.

Volunteer Duty Officers will be on hand to assist with vehicle

and pedestrian traffic movement within the Club grounds as

well as conducting other important checks and reminder

activities, especially on the busier days during our warmer

months.

Off to an early start in the new year, the group met at the

Club on Saturday 7/1/17 to prepare and familiarise with a

specific list of tasks on which, we will focus attention. This

list has been developed after consultation with our Bosun,

Club management and Members in general.

Over the next few months, you can expect to see and be

approached by our Duty Officers who, will be wearing Hi-vis vests and identity badges. We ask that you

support their efforts by co-operating and accepting a brief delay this contact may cause before continuing

with your planned outing on the water.

Our Duty Officers will be focusing on at least some of the following, at all times.

Confirming current membership on entry to the Club

Your name and Club Membership number should be provided when requested. Ideally, your Club

ID card should be produced along with a form of personal identification, such as your Driver’s

Licence, etc.

This detail will be cross checked with a membership listing held by the Duty Officers.

This is also an opportunity to ensure the Club has your email address, contact phone number and

current details of your vehicle, boat and trailer.

If you cannot provide sufficient information to confirm current membership with reference to the

membership listing, entry to the Club may be denied

Confirming current year Club stickers are affixed to the vehicle, trailer and boat. Trailer ID

plates or acceptable marking will also be checked If any non compliance is found, you will be asked to contact the Club office during normal

working hours to request issue of the required stickers and/or the purchase of a standard trailer

ID plate. A Reminder Notice will be issued by the Duty Officer and those details will be

entered into the Club database

Confirming that parking in the Club grounds is for Club Members only and advising that guest

vehicles are to be parked outside the grounds

Members will be reminded that recent changes to the parking layout and markings will require them to

familiarise with bay line colour coding (legend sign is positioned at the entrance gate) and that the

markings identify the maximum area for the relevant bays. Correct positioning of vehicles and trailers

within the confines of the line markings will assist to ensure other Members are not disadvantaged.

Parking within the Club grounds is a benefit offered to Members but, available space cannot be

guaranteed

Advising Members that Ramp signs have been positioned to denote specific launching and

retrieval use. Some of these signs may be changed during the day to assist with boat and

vehicle/trailer traffic flow

This system is being trialled during busy times at the ramps, please observe and obey the signage

and/or instruction from our Bosun

Reminding Members to enter the Preparation Bays

prior to launching and retrieving their boats.

The purpose of doing this is to provide some

predictability of vehicular movements. If all

Preparation Bays are occupied, Members are

requested to queue at the ramp entry area rather than

cross over the traffic moving inward and outward

from the ramps. Move across to the Preparation Bays

only when space is available and when safe to do so.

We encourage a bit of patience by Members during

the busier times

Food and Beverage Facility is on the move…………………

Our partnership with Creative Catering providing all our Club and Function catering requirements is

a major step in growing our food and beverage business.

Club surveys over the past two years have indicated healthy member support of the introduction of

meals to compliment our bar trading hours.

We will initially introduce club meals in conjunction with our Sunday Sessions and live

entertainment. Trading for Sunday Sessions will be extended from 2pm thru to 8pm with orders for

club meals from 4pm to 7pm. We will monitor the results together with member feedback and

tweak order times and the introduction of meals on other days as the service develops.

Club meals will be launched at our Sunday Session on Sunday 5 February. Your support and

feedback on Club meals is important. We expect this day to be busy, so please book your table

through Cindy.

Sportfishing Group

Christmas has been and gone and we now find ourselves with the Demersal ban lifted and some pretty

good days of fishing ahead of us.

We held our January Member’s Fishing Day on January 14. The

boats left the ramp at 7am and headed for the deeper water outside

Carnac. There was mixed success with several boats reporting

under size Dhuis captured and returned. Peter Anderton on Storm

Boy came home with a couple of size dhufish which won him the

prize for the largest fish on the day. Peter also captured and

released another 3 undersize dhuis and a black ass cod. It was

perfect weather for a day on the water.

Next Members fishing day will be Saturday 18th March. Remember

the comp days are open to all CPBA members; come along it’s a

good day. 7am start with a briefing to be held for all skippers

before departure, then all leaving together. Radio skeds are

conducted regularly during the comp to check on what/where the

action is. The weigh in is conducted around 1400hrs.

Next fishing group meeting is Monday 13th February, 7.30pm at the

Club, this will be the day after the SFG Crustacean Bake, Sunday

February 12th at the Club. Come along, bring a seafood/crustacean

dish to share and join us for lunch. 12 noon for a lunch around

12.30pm. All SFG members and their guests welcome.

Included with this article are SFG members with some their recent fishing efforts.

Mark Seares (aka 2 hulls) with his 2 Augusta herring, from the Augusta sub branch

Christine and Tim Schwass Grahame Franklin Bodie Burns with his Baldy...

Here’s hoping the action keeps happening.

SFG Facebook page, the SFG has begun the process of opening a Facebook page to be used by Club

members to see what is happening – trip dates, competition dates, functions etc. More info to come.

Best of fishing

Cruising Group

It’s January and our first event for the year was a huge success!

The 2017 Rockingham Overnighter took place on

Saturday the 14th and saw 15 CPBA boats and 5 FSC

boats power down to Rockingham’s TCYC and

spend the night on their moorings.

First off I’d like to extend my thanks to the

Committee and Club at TCYC as our Rockingham

counterparts did not let us down. They graciously

gave us moorings free of charge and their Boson

took good care of us by being our personal taxi right

up until 1130 pm! Wow!

To show our respect and acknowledge our mutual

objectives we presented their Rear Commodore with

our club burgee and Cruising group burgees and received their club

burgee in return. Keep an eye out in your club room as these flags will

be on display soon.

The next event will be the Rottnest weekender on the 4-6 of February.

Have you booked your mooring???

Regards

First Rear Commodore

On the 1st February 2017 this group will commence its twenty sixth year.

The group started in 1991 with about sixty members that wanted to use the clubs’ fantastic facilities for other

than fishing and crabbing, so the social group was started.

Currently our membership has died off to about twelve – we therefore are looking for more starters.

We meet at 11.45am on the first Wednesday of each month, and finish at 2.45 pm (in time to collect any

youngsters from school).

We spend about one hour cooking and eating jour lunch and have a natter. We then split to play carpet bowls,

cards, board games etc.

We each pay $5.00 per month, plus $1.00 for lotto – each is voluntary.

For this expenditure we may receive a feed of prawns, fish & chips, a restaurant meal and a Christmas party.

To date our only large lotto collect was $800 odd which was distributed equally – small collects go to revenue.

Trusting more CPBA members and their friends come and join our group.
