welcomewelcome It’s hard to put into words how crazy 2017 has been! It has certainly flown by for me as it probably has for many of you. I want to make sure that I take a moment to thank each of you for making this year a great one. For those of you that volunteered, helped with special projects, made phone calls, brought us cookies or simply decided to invest in the Chamber – the biggest heartfelt thank you goes out to you. Our community is so special, and you all make it that way.

We’ve had a year of making changes and making strong efforts to make sure this Chamber is working for you and meeting all your needs. I hope you’ve noticed some of our new things. If you have an idea for new projects or would like to join one of our committees, we welcome you. We love a team effort, because it’s a great way to make things happen that benefit everyone. We will continue to adjust things here to make sure we’re doing the best we can.

And although we are wrapping up a very busy holiday season, we hope you’ll go ahead and put all our upcoming events in your calendar. It’s the easiest and best way to make the most out of your membership. And our events are fun - not to mention a great place to network and meet new people and potentially build a great relationship. So we hope to see you soon.

And we are truly excited for 2018! We’re growing, and exciting things are happening in Opelika. We will be ready and hope that you will be too. Let’s all enjoy the special things we have here and be thankful for them in the new year.

Manufacturing Day, October 4, is a salute to modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manu-facturers. It’s a celebration during which manufacturers invite their communities to their facilities to educate everyone about career opportunities and improve public perception about manufacturing. The Opelika Chamber thought this would be a great opportunity to host a luncheon and take members on a tour of one of our manufacturers. The luncheon was sponsored by H & S Commercial and Industrial Supplies and Services and the tour of Pharmavite, the

manufacturer of Nature Made Vitamins, was sponsored by Elwood Staffing. Meesoon Han, Alabama-Korea Education and Economic Partnership (A-KEEP) Executive Director was the guest speaker for the luncheon. Han co-founded A-KEEP with Senator Ger-ald Dial and State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice. She has been an educator for most of her adult life and taught Computer Science and Math in various universities over 17 years. She empha-sizes preparing students for the Global Village, and during her tenure facilitated International Partnerships between US and Korean universities and organi-

zations and sponsored International Student Clubs. A-KEEP’s primary mission provides multicultural diversity education pro-grams to the students and professionals of Alabama and Korea and bridges the differences between institutions and corporations of Alabama and Korea for local economic consumption. Han spoke about exploring social and business us-ages of informal body language such as examining acceptable behaviors in both cultures, learning informal expressions, communicating through body language, and understanding cultural differences in symbolism.

annualmeetingSmall Business Workshop Breakfast

For New and Existing Businesses There are 28 million small businesses just in the U.S. alone. They outnumber corporations by 1162 to 1! Approximately 543,000 new businesses get started each month. Opening a business can be so exciting, yet very daunting when it comes to rules and regulations. To help alleviate a little stress of this process, The Opelika Chamber of Commerce hosted a Small Business Workshop Breakfast for citizens that might have questions about how to open a new business, move a business or maybe expand an existing business in Opelika. River Bank and Trust was the sponsor for the event. A panel, consisting of various department directors for the City of Opelika, were available to answer questions participants had about specific requirements concerning opening or improving a business. Knowing the requirements and specifications ahead of time should certainly make the process go much easier. Some of the topics discussed were: ● Simple steps to starting a business in Opelika. ● Moving your business to a new location. ● Adding or moving a driveway. ● When do I have to improve my building, landscaping or parking lot? ● Business license details. ● What inspections are required and when? ● Specifics to downtown businesses. ● Where can my business locate? ● Signs: Permanent and Temporary. ● Outdoor Sales and Temporary Events.

Business Over Breakfast with Workforce Development Director Jeff Lynn

You hear your cell phone signal an incoming text message and you pick it up and begin to type a reply . . . you are not watching the

road . . . your car drifts into the oncoming traffic lane. Are you OK with that? I’ll answer for you: No, you are not.

If you text and drive, you are putting yourself and others at risk. Please just don’t do it. Oh, and that text . . . it can wait.

$1.81 is added to the economy making it crucial to find skilled workers. Six out of ten open skilled production positions are unfilled due to talent shortage. Eighty percent of manufacturers are willing to pay more than the market rate to get quality employees. Alabama’s annual average job openings in manufacturing and transportation is 14,485. This is a huge problem for these businesses. Before coming to ACCS, Lynn was the executive director of LED FastStart in Louisiana, an award-winning customized workforce development program. There, he created certification programs for workforce, manufacturing, industrial maintenance and machining which he believes is one way of overcoming the

skills gap. He also discussed the ACCS’s strategic plan for helping eliminate the problem which included implementing the MSSC verification program, increasing dual enrollment by 25%, meeting with companies to find out their needs and focusing on all areas of the state to increase the pipeline of workers.

Workforce Development Director Jeff Lynn of the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) was the guest speaker at the Opelika Chamber’s fall Business Over Breakfast on November 14. Lynn’s workforce development experience has spanned more than 30 years. His workforce development projects have involved clients such as Kia Motors, GM, Ford, Honda, Siemens, Toyo Tires North America, Sasol, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, IBM, GE Capital, and CenturyLink. Workforce development initiatives aim to deliver targeted education, training and employment support services that allow people to improve their opportunities for employment. Director Lynn’s task is to work with businesses, economic development organizations, industries, education institutions and communities to ensure students have the skills needed for in-demand jobs and employers have access to a successful workforce. Lynn said, “Workforce development is a multi—tiered collaborative effort. Our success depends

on our ability to work together to meet the collective needs of our state – residents who need good jobs , employers who need skilled workers, and communities that need business and industry in order to thrive. We must listen to the needs of our industries and provide world-class workforce solutions.” Manufacturing has a huge impact on the economy. For every $1 spent in manufacturing,

The Brown Real Estate and Insurance Agency was formed in 1973 when Mr. Charles R. Brown bought the Ratcliff Real Estate and Insurance Agency, an established business since 1946. Brown and his wife Pat ran the business together for many years which was originally located at 15-17 North 8th Street in downtown Opelika. Needing to expand, the Browns bought and renovated an old Texaco Service Center on 100 S. 7th Street in 1980 and moved the agency a short distance away to the location it still is today. In 1983, one of the Brown’s sons, Bill, joined the couple in the business and the insurance

part of the company sold, so the name became The Brown Agency. Bill has been the President of the company since 1984 and his mother, the matriarch of the family and business, still works part time keeping the books! This agency is a full-service real estate company providing the area with professional expertise in residential and commercial real estate sales, property management and appraisal services. Visit them on 7th Street or give them a call at 334.745.3584. You can also visit their website to see all their services, properties and listings, www.thebrownagency.com.
