    Reducing discomfort in IM and SQ injections:

    Select a needle of the smallest recommended gauge appropriate to site

    and medication to be given. t is recommended to use two needles! one for removing medications from

    the vial#ampule and the second one to inject the medication. n pre9lled

    syringes with non+detachable needles! remove the excess solution from

    the needle. 6+tract techni1ue prevents leakage and reduces discomfort.

    nject the medication into relaxed muscles.

    :o not inject areas that feel hard on palpation or tender to the patient.

    nsert the needle with a dartlike motion without hesitation and remove it

    o Check the catheter for patency 9rst by aspirating gently and checking for

    blood return! then by ;ushing with )ml plain /SS. Ensure that the solution

    enters the site with a smooth! minimal pressure ;ow without pain or

    resistance.o f pain or resistance is detected this may indicate that the line is not patent.

    :o not use force if resistance is felt! a clot may break away and cause a

    blockage somewhere else in the body.
