In Winter

Jill and her mom were walking outside. They were taking their dog Sparky for

a walk. They were wearing coats. The wind was blowing. It blew brown leaves off

the trees. The leaves tumbled and twirled in front of them.

"Winter is coming," said Mama.

"Mama, where do the leaf go in winter?"

the"The leaves fall off the trees. They fall on The ground. Snow may cover them up. Latest, they will be

part of the soil."

"Why do the leaves fall off?" asked Jill.

"The tree rest for the winter. When spring comes, trees grow new leaves. There is More sunlight in the spring

and summer. Trees use sunlight to make their food said Mama.

Jill saw some flowers. Their stems were bent. Their petals drooped. Some petal had already fallen off. The

wind blew the petels away. Will the flowers be part of the suul, too? she asked.

"Yes, some part of the flower will," said her mother. "But the flowers' seeds will wait until spring. When

spring comes, the seeds will grow into new flower plants."

Jill saw a cricket hopping in the grass. "Where do bugs go in winter"? she asked.

"Many insects die in winter. They lay eggs in the fall. The eggs hatch in the spring. Then we see more insects,"

said Mama.

Jill saw a bird hopping on the ground. "Where do birds go in winter." she asked.

"Some birds stay here. They can live in the cold. There is enough food for them here. But some birds fly south

in winter. Then in the spring, they fly back here to live fiwr the summer."

Jill saw a mouse. Sparky saw it, too! He pulled at the leash. He wanted to chase the mouse. Jill And Mama

laughed. Jill asked" ,where do mice go in winter?"

"Mice make a nice, warm nest. They store food all summer so they have enough to eat. They have a cozy

winter home," said Mama.

Jill was quiet for a few moments. "I guess we're lucky," she said.

"Why?" asked Mama.

"Well, we don't have to move to a new place in winter. We have a cozy home all year. We dont' have to store

up food for the whole winter. We dont' die after just one summer. I'm glad we have a warm house. I'm glad we

can get more food from the grocery store whenever we need it. I'm glad to go outside and play in the snow. I'm

glad to see spring come, too! And I'm glad to see the changes in spring, summer, fall, and winter."

"You're pretty smart!" said Mama, hugging her tight. "When we get home, let's put some birdseed out for the

birds. We can be their grocery store this winter!"

edHelpName: A Day for Mother Goose

Mother Goose looked out her window. What a sunny day! It was a great day for a salad and a walk.

Mother Goose ate a tasty green salad. Then she put on her best bonnet and went outside. Her bonnet strings flapped in the breeze.

"The sun feels good on my back!" Mother Goose said. She walked down the path. Mary's garden was ahead. Yellow, red, and blue blooms bobbed in arow.

Mary was not in her garden. Where could she be? Mother Goose liked the flowers, but she wanted to see her friend.

Further down the path was Miss Muffett's place. Her stool was still under the big oak tree. Mother Goose stopped to rest. Where was Miss Muffet? This was the time she used to eat her curds and whey! The little spider was not there, either.

Mother Goose tugged at her bonnet strings. "Where are my friends?" she wondered aloud. She went on her way down the path.

Humpty Dumpty's brick wall was ahead on the left. The big egg was not there. "Oh, I do hope that he has not fallen again," Mother Goose said. She hurried to see. No egg shells lay on the ground. "I do not know where Humpty is. At least he is not broken."

Someone would be home at the next stop. It was the big shoe! A family lived in it! The mother had many children. It was always a noisy place. Mother Goose liked to tell stories. The children loved to hear her stories.

The shoe was very quiet. Mother Goose looked around. There was nobody to see. Nimble Jack was not jumping over things. No kittens were crying about lost mittens. Jack and Jill were not at the top of the hill. They were not rolling down the hill, either.

Mother Goose sat down to think. None of her friends were home. They all must have gone out. Where did they go? Why did they leave her behind?

"Maybe Old King Cole knows," she said to herself. "I will go and see the king. I do not like being left out!"

The path led to the king's castle. A tall hedge stood beside the path. There was a gate in the hedge. Mother Goose

edHelpName: heard voices as she passed the gate. She stopped. Was that the king's voice? If so, he was in his garden instead of his castle. He seemed to have a crowd with him.

"I will take a peek inside," Mother Goose decided. She pushed the gate open. She craned her neck to see inside the garden. All her friends were there! They sat around a pretty table! It looked like a tea party!

"What is going on here?" Mother Goose cried. It hurt her feelings to be left out of the party.

"Oh, Mother Goose, here you are!" called the king.

"Surprise! Surprise!" her friends yelled.

"We have been waiting for you. Where have you been?" King Cole asked.

Mother Goose gaped. "Where have I been? I have been looking for my friends!"

Mary giggled. "We have all been here. Did you forget that today is Mother Goose Day?"

Mother Goose blushed. She had forgotten. The party was for her! Thank goodness she had not missed it!

1.Why is Memorial Day a holiday?

2.When is Memorial Day?

3.How do we celebrate Memorial Day?"I need to go to school, Dad. Can you give me

a ride?" asked Alex.

"Today is Saturday," said Dad. "There is no

school today."

"I know. I am helping put flags on the graves

of people who were in the military. It's for

Memorial Day," answered Alex. "Mr. Reeves

wanted us to meet at school today."

"Oh, is your scout troop going to decorate

veterans' graves for Memorial Day?" asked Dad.

"What are veterans?" asked Alex.

"Veterans are men and women who have

served our country in one of the armed forces."

"Yes, that's what my scout troop is doing. Is

Memorial Day always on the same day each year?"

asked Alex.

"Memorial Day is always the last Monday in

May," Dad answered.

"Did you know that Memorial Day used to be

called Decoration Day?" asked Alex.

"I did know that," smiled Dad. "I remember

Grandma telling me all about it. People used to pick

whatever flowers were blooming in their yards.

They would put the flowers in cans, jars, or vases.

They would take the flowers to cemeteries to

decorate the graves. Everyone would bring food. At

noon, they would have what they called dinner on

the ground. They would spread quilts on the grass

and share a picnic lunch. It was officially named

Memorial Day in 1967."

"We don't really celebrate Memorial Day, do

we? I know we get out of school Monday. Our

swimming pool will open this weekend. I always

thought that Memorial Day was to celebrate the

start of summer," said Alex.

"It is more than that," said Dad. "It is a day to

honor the people who have died in service to our

country. I guess I've never taught you much about it

because we have been lucky. None of our family

members have died while serving in the military.

The holiday is really a day of remembrance. We

need to remember the people who have given their

lives so that we can live a life of freedom."

"How can we do that?" asked Alex.

"Today you are putting flags on soldiers' graves.

That is a good thing to do. Monday there will be a

parade in town. We could go and watch it. When

the American flag passes by, stand and proudly

place your hand over your heart. Later we could go

to the cemetery and put flowers on some of the

graves. People have done that since the Civil War

ended," said Dad. "They started decorating graves

to remember all the soldiers who died in that war."

"I think I'd like that," said Alex.

"We could also buy poppies to wear. The red

poppy is known as the flower of remembrance.

Veterans in hospitals make artificial poppies. When

we buy them, the money is used to help veterans in

need."

"That's nice. Is there anything else people do

on Memorial Day?" asked Alex.

"Yes. At 3 o'clock, we can stop what we are doing for

one minute. We can use that one minute of silence to

remember and give thanks to our fallen heroes. They gave

their lives for our country."

"I'd like that, too," said Alex. "It is a small thing to do to

honor those who have given us so much."

"I agree!" said Dad, smiling.
