Jack Johnston

Geneseo Community Players has been truly

blessed by the support of Jack Johnston.

Anyone who has participated in a GCP

musical in the last 30+ years had the

opportunity to work with Jack. Musically,

Jack was definitely a perfectionist and a bit

of a stickler. However, he was there to

support you, to help you, and if he had to, compromise for you.

He especially enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the theater,

musicals and music with the younger members of a cast.

Jack joined the faculty of SUNY Geneseo in 1977. He was

originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and received his

Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

He received his Master’s degree

from the Eastman School of Music,

Rochester, New York. He was an

Associate Professor of Music at

SUNY Geneseo and was

instrumental in creating the strong

music and theater department

enjoyed for many years by the

College and this community. His

credits include Director Emeritus School of the Arts, SUNY

Geneseo (1992 – 2008) as well as Composer-in-Residence,

Ashland University in Ohio and Contemporary Music Project

Composer-in-Residence, City of Parma, Ohio. Jack authored a

number of music-related textbooks. He was an accomplished

composer for orchestra and theater and publishers include

Theodore Presser, Shawnee Press and CMP.

Jack’s loss cannot be measured. He was an exceptional and

dedicated musician, excellent teacher, a steadfast supporter and

friend of Geneseo Community Players and a wonderful guy.

We most certainly will miss him and the sounds of his music.
