Bay Area sewer agencies are spreading the word: Toilets Aren’t Trashcans!

The campaign is focused on protecting the pipes, pumps, plants, and personnel of wastewater utilities by reducing the materials that are inappropriately flushed or drained into the sewer system.

Products such as baby and cleaning wipes, paper towels, and feminine hygiene products should not be flushed but often are, causing expensive problems for waste-water treatment plants.

Other consumer products contain ingredients such as plastic microbeads and triclosan that can’t be removed by the treatment plant and may harm water quality and aquatic animals.

FOG (fats, oils, and greases) and unused pharmaceuticals should also be kept out of the sewer system.

Posters promoting the Toilets Aren’t Trashcans message are available as a PDF via email.

COASTAL CLEANUP DAY 2016

on the third Saturday of each September, removing trash and recyclables from California’s beaches, lakes, and waterways.

Families, friends, coworkers, scout troops, school groups,

Currents is printed on recycled paper using soy-based inks. It is

produced bimonthly by the Vallejo Sanitation & Flood Control

District. For more in formation, visit www.VSFCD.com or call

(707) 644-8949 ext. 292.

Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, September 17, 2015, from 9 a.m. to noon. You can participate in the state’s largest volunteer event!

Hundreds of people in Vallejo join nearly 80,000 around the state

Did you know that you might harm your local creek or lake if

you drain your swimming pool or spa water into the gutter or on the ground? If you need to drain your pool or spa, it must be discharged to the sanitary sewer. The sewer

pipes convey the water to the wastewater treatment plant,

which is designed to remove most of the chemicals. Please call us at

(707) 644-8949 ext. 260 or email [email protected] for a free

Discharge Permit. A brochure with more

information can be found on our website at VSFCD.com. If you’d

like us to mail you the free brochure, please call (707) 644-

8949 ext. 292 or email [email protected].

service club and individuals come together to clean and celebrate, removing vast amounts of debris to protect the creeks, bay and ocean.

You can too! There will be sites all over Vallejo. To find yours, call VALCORE at (707) 645-8258 or visit www.ValcoreRecycling.org.

On the day of the event, wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, and gloves.

Bring a refillable water bottle and bucket, if you have them; if not we will have plenty of supplies.

After the event, there will be a free lunch at the marina for volunteers.

AIRBOATS IN ACTION If you were near

White Slough in late May, you might have noticed two of our Field Operations staff members removing tires and other debris at low tide.

More than 20 tires and several cubic yards of debris were removed for proper disposal.

Originally purchased to help reduce algae in White Slough, the air-boats have also been used to help other agencies in rescue and retrieval operations over the years.
