This event would not be possible without the dedication of the Ontario Mine Rescue staff, the 2018 Provincial Competition Planning Committee, and the extremely passionate people at Alamos Gold Young-Davidson Mine. With the support of safe and innovative underground mine operators like Alamos Gold, Ontario Mine Rescue can challenge the best teams in the province with realistic mine emergency response scenarios, to the face, in their actual place of work.

Thanks to all the support staff, drivers, setup crew, helpers and organizers involved in the execution of this year’s Provincial Competition. Special thanks to the competing teams for the tireless work beyond the call of duty to prepare for this Mine Rescue evaluation. Win or lose, the training you have undertaken will be invaluable as you become leaders of Mine Rescue teams during future emergencies.

The Young-Davidson mine is an underground mining operation in Northern Ontario, Canada. The property consists of contiguous mineral leases and claims totaling 11,000 acres and is situated on the site of two past producing

mines that produced one million ounces from 1934-1957. The Young-Davidson open pit mine achieved commercial production on September 1, 2012, and on October 31, 2013, the Company declared commercial production at the Young-Davidson underground mine following the commissioning of the shaft hoisting system. Open pit mining ceased in June 2014 upon depletion of the reserve; however, stockpiled open pit ore will supplement mill feed until underground production rates have ramped up to design levels.

The underground mine has been designed for low operating costs through the use of large modern equipment, gravity movement of ore and waste through raises, shaft hoisting, minimal ore and waste re-handling, high productivity bulk mining methods and paste backfill. The mine operates scooptrams to load, haul and transfer stope production to the ore pass system from where it is hoisted to the surface via 18 tonne skips.

The initial discovery of gold in the project area was made by prospector Jake Davidson in 1916 on what became the former Young-Davidson mine. This sparked a staking rush that resulted in a second discovery by Samuel Otisse on what became the MCM Mine property. Surface prospecting, trenching and outcrop stripping continued intermittently for the next several years and a joint venture was established between Hollinger Corporation and Young-Davidson Mines Limited which led to initial underground production in 1934. Between 1934 and 1957, one million ounces of gold was produced from the Young-Davidson and MCM Mine properties. Following closure of the mines, the properties remained dormant for a number of years before seeing some exploration and other activities in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2002, a private company vended the asset into Young-Davidson Mines Limited, the same company that had discovered the property, and exploration activities were re-initiated. In late 2005, Northgate Minerals amalgamated with Young-Davidson Mines Limited, and proceeded with surface exploration, environmental and engineering studies and underground exploration and development. In 2011, AuRico Gold, a predecessor of Alamos Gold, acquired Northgate Minerals which included Young-Davidson. In 2015, AuRico Gold merged with Alamos Gold.

COMPETING TEAMS

Boliden Tara Mines, Europe’s largest zinc mine, is also one of the largest in a global comparison. The mine is close to the town of Navan in County Meath, approximately 50 km northwest from Dublin City.

The Navan ore body was discovered by the Canadian company Tara Exploration & Development Co Ltd. in 1970. Development commenced in 1973 and production in 1977. Since then over 85 million tonnes of ore has been extracted.

With continued exploration and investment in new technologies and infrastructure, the mineral resources have continued to grow. Approximately 2.6 million tonnes of ore is mined annually for the production of zinc and lead concentrates.

Today the mine is owned by the Swedish metals company Boliden, a world class metals company with a focus on sustainable mining and metal production. The company has operations within exploration, mining, smelting and recycling in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Ireland. Boliden has a strong safety culture, coupled with proactive risk prevention. Their goal is to create an injury-free, healthy workplace for all employees and contractors.

Mine Rescue at Boliden Tara Mines was established in the 1970s. Ontario Mine Rescue influences have always been strong. The Handbook in Mine Rescue Training and Recovery Operations is used as one of the main training tools. Mine Rescue Management have been trained in Mine Rescue operations and Emergency Preparedness Planning by Workplace Safety North.

There are 4 teams of Mine Rescue volunteers with a technical support team and a Mine Rescue Officer. All mine rescue activities onsite are overseen by the Manager of Mine Rescue. Boliden Tara Mines is a member of the Irish Mine Rescue Committee which coordinate mine rescue resources in Ireland enabling mutual assistance in the event of an emergency at a participating mine.
