Empowered Ignorance? From SMRT to Hougang
Consensus among the ignorant is still ignorance. George Elliott
We have seen the result of an ignorant CEO at SMRT.
As a CEO, she was empowered to carry out the job of
first world metro system. But at the end we need a
public inquiry on MRT breakdowns as we have over
trusted and empowered her to do a good job. This is
really a heavy price for Singapore!
Do we still need another PAP ignorant MP in the
Parliament? It will not do any good for Singapore as the
consensus among the PAP ignorant MPs is still
ignorance about the people, especially the lower
income people and Hougang residents.
Can I am my own man raise national issues?
The Hougang PAP candidate for the by-election is from
NTUC. Has he raised the issue of lower income
workers? Besides providing free medical, legal and food
to Hougang residents, can he as I am my own man
voice out the national issue of lower income workers,
housing, education or other issues. Perhaps, there isalready a consensus for the PAP ministers and MPs to
voice out in one same message productivity before
wages increase. Can he go beyond the party line?
Hougang, as a typical Singapore heartland, does have
lower income workers and the braved one, who
requests for a court hearing on by-election, is also a
lower income worker as stated in her statement. Same

as Workers Party, she wants to have an early by-
election so that the new MP can take care of her needs
the typical need of lower income families. And the
PAP, PM and the PAP candidate for Hougang are quiteignorance about her basic need.
No wonder the PAP only wants to talk about local issues
at the by-election. They have already reached
consensus and group think about low income workers,
public transport, housing, education and other national
issues.
Assistance is not teaching fish catching
The PAP candidate Desmond Choo is his own words:
[One thing I will champion in Hougang: Assistance
schemes, such as for health, education, transport and
job matching; and a free legal clinic
'I want the residents to know that I am my own man,
that I have my own vision for Hougang, that
I've...executed my plans, and there's more that I can
do. So, having party bigwigs here or not is not going to
distract me from how I want to run my campaign in
Hougang.' (ST 11 May 12)]
Health, education, transport and jobs are nationalissues. Without the support of party bigwigs, can you
cut Upper Serangoon Road into two, build another
school or hospital, or create more jobs? This is why
Choo said he could only provide assistances. And
assistance is not teaching people how to fish.
Different empowerment (and different result) of
SMRT and Hougang
-

From SMRT to Hougang, we see the difference of
empowerment. Only in Hougang, you are given a
chance (reluctantly) to empower your new MP. While
for SMRT, the CEO is appointed and surely there is noreminder of pubic duty and responsibility. So, the CEO
only looks at profit, money and productivity.
Whoever wins the by-election in Hougang is challenged
and reminded by his duty to serve the Hougang
residents and as a wider responsibility in the Parliament
of Singapore. It is suggested that all key appointments
of public infrastructure and organisations must go
through a public duty and responsibility test.
Otherwise, they will think that they are joining a profit
making, business oriented private company.
Only you, the Hougang voters stand tall to remind the
government in the past 20 years on the duty of
government, public service and responsibility. Now,there is a chance to empower your representative
again, what are you waiting for, hesitating for?

From attacking WP to attacking YSL so to make
the BE local
And also you go low key, I also go low key to
make it a local election.
There is a strategic shift for the PAP in Hougang by-
election. Suddenly, they realise that even they have
full coverage in the main stream media, there are after
all only more than 23,000 voters in Hougang. Only
Hougang voters can vote in the BE.
The PAP wants to make it a local election but with
national coverage of MSM of PAP candidate, it is no
more a local coverage. Its intention to limit the BE to
Hougang is not working. Hence, they are now shifting
to new strategies:
- Attacking YSL rather than WP as WP is a national
political party.
- Changing to low key approach because only local
Hougang voters can vote.
It is the usual way of the PAP: saying one thing and
doing another thing. Now you can clearly see their
colour and double heads.
Lets look at the timeline of attacking WP and YSL first:
16 Feb 2012
Khaw Boon Wan attacking WP and YSL
PAP chairman and Minister for National Development
Mr Khaw Boon Wan said the Workers' Party (WP) should
-

come clean with the people on expelled WP member
Yaw Shin Leong's alleged extramarital affair.
The New Paper reported today that Mr Khaw expressed
surprise with the WP's "sudden U-turn" of expelling Mr
Yaw from the party when the WP leadership had stood
shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with him at the party's
Chinese New Year dinner. (Asiaone)
9 May 2012
Lee Hsien Loong on calling BE at Hougang continued
his attack on WP and YSL
Mr Lee also gave a quick run-down of what had
happened in Hougang.
The WP and Mr Yaw, he said, had not given
Singaporeans 'a full and proper account of what
happened'. He said: 'Both the WP and Mr Yaw have let
down all those who voted for him.' (ST)
16 May 2012
Khaw Boon Wan on nomination centre attacking only
YSL
Mr Khaw noted that Hougang has been served by the
Workers' Party's (WP) Low Thia Khiang for 20 years.
"Last year, he moved on and handed it over to Yaw
Shin Leong. Unfortunately, Mr Yaw got into trouble,
disgraced himself and disappointed all the voters. And
the worse thing is leave just like that without a word -
not a single word of explanation or apology. I find that
utterly irresponsible and in fact, arrogant, taking thevoters for granted," said Mr Khaw. (channelnewsasia)
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
13/46
The more the PAP is attacking WP, the more the
Hougang BE will become a national mini-referendum of
the past one year of the PAP government. Since YSL
was the former local MP, attacking YSL is sufficient.
You low key I low key no wonder this is a Low
constituency
Even though WP never admits this BE is a local
election, however, as an old hand in Hougang, they
know too well who have the voting rights. They are
happy to see the PAP classifying the BE as local butmaking it big likes a national one (with the help of
MSM).
So, WP candidate for Hougang BE is a down to earth
person. Since the announcement of BE, Ah Huat is a
low key man.
[The Workers' Party candidate for Hougang, Png EngHuat, said he's running a "no-frills and low key, ground"
campaign.
Relying less on social media, Mr Png said he prefers to
speak to residents personally, going door-to-door.
(channelnewsasia, 16 May)]
However, Ah Choo, the PAP candidate for Hougang is I
am my own man. He even has his own slogan "Always
here for you". But today, he too is shifting to low key
approach of campaigning. He has no activities for the
MSM. As reported in Shinmin, most of his activities will
shift to low key.

The People's Action Party's Hougang by-election candidate Desmond
Choo on Thursday asked voters not to mix up the democratic process with
the need for alternative voices in Parliament.
Mr Choo said that the by-election itself shows that Singapore's democracy
was working.
He added that there were already five alternative voices in Parliament.
"This by-election is really about selecting a candidate that can best serve
the long-term interests of the residents," he said.
"So do not mix up the democracy part with providing alternative voices
and the real purpose of this by-election, which is that Hougang residents
need somebody to take care of them." (Channelnewsasia, 18 May 2012)

WP wealth creator vs. PAP Wealth Manager
If you look at the crowd turnout of election rallies, youcertainly will conclude who is the creator and who is the
manager.
To bring Singapore forward, as suggested by Ngiam
Tong Dow, we need more wealth creators rather than
managers. For the coming Hougang BE, it is too clear
cut that Hougang voters will want a creator in the
Parliament rather than a manger in the Parliament.
The performance of PAP wealth mangers has been
quite disappointing recently. Their performance is
turning from good to bad. Without warning, it will turn
to very bad.
Workers Party as wealth creator
A creator is able to attract crowd, move the crowd,
voice their concerns, listen to them, and speak for
them. The MRT and bus operators must be happy too,
they will have a small fortune when there is a rally.
Business activities, small businesses, coffee shops,
even the ice-cream sellers are happy too. This is called
wealth creation. This is WP.
Peoples Action Party as wealth manager
So, who is a wealth manager? During rally, they
manage the food, drinks, transport, free goodies, PR,
MSM, even the audiences. It is so efficient, productive,
so well organised and all things are under control. The
layout design is nice but no substance. The crowd they
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
20/46
attracted are not really their hard core voters so there
is no wealth created.
Thanks for Ngiam to point out the difference.
{Singapore's choice: Wealth creation or management?
Former permanent secretary Ngiam says many
manage wealth but too few create it
Although Singapore is often held up as an example of
economic success, it has produced an abundance of
wealth managers but not enough wealth creators, said
a former top civil servant. (ST 17 May 2012)}
There are really too many wealth mangers in the
Parliament. It is absolutely not necessary to add one
more PAP manager in the Parliament.
Creation is not destruction
It is like Apple against Nokia. Apple is able to attract
long queue of buyers but there is no queue for Nokia.
Who will ever think that Nokia can go down so far?
Apple adds new meaning to mobile phone, from smartphones to entertainment, information, picture/video
taking and internet. They keep on creating new
meanings to their products.
So creation is not a destruction, an additional WP MP in
the Parliament will add value to Singapore not
destroying the parliament democracy.
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
21/46
In the 1950s and 1960, the PAP used the crowd
supports to get elected and formed the government.
They were the wealth creators but not now. They now
manage wealth for the rich and create wealth for therich. Hence, the rich becomes richer, so do the bigger
and bigger rich-poor gap.
The ordinary citizens will need to find a new wealth
creator, be it WP or SDP or other alternative voices.
These creating voices will bring new perspective to
Singapore, a new hope to Singapore.
Ngaim had pointed out the concentration of our
talents at RI and RGS (or to a few schools) will do no
good to Singapore. We do not need to have so many
talented wealth managers. We need and must
produce wealth creators from other schools. Same
thing for our Parliament too, we should not allow the
monopoly of PAP group thinking in the Parliament.

Taxi without Airbags: That is the maximum
Desmond can offer.
Vehicle airbags have been around for more than 20
years. It is longer than the Hougang voters elected WP
to represent them in the Parliament. Now almost all
private cars in Singapore are equipped with airbags for
safety reasons. It really comes with a shock our taxis
have no airbags LTA does nothing about it,
passengers dont know about it except the taxioperators and tax drivers.
Both the operators and drivers know the situation but
due to cost and rental factors, they remain silent as
both want to save money. So, the drivers have to risk
their life and the only thing they can do is to drive
carefully. No matter how careful, accident is an
accident. So, the risk also extends to the passengers
who have no knowledge about it.
When Desmond said he was his own man and an
independent man, was he the driver or passenger or
operator? Since he is part of the establishment,
member of the PAP the ruling party, he should have
more knowledge than ordinary citizens thepassengers. Will he inform the passengers there is no
airbags in the taxi? Does he see his duty to inform
passengers the truth? Or will he continue to co-
operative with the operators to remain silence?
Desmond has yet to be elected and there is no way to
prove his independence from the PAP. Unless he is not
a member of the PAP, a true independent standing in
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
26/46
the by-election with his own political logo, then we can
give credit to his words he is his own man. However,
when you look at the existing PAP MPs, who can be
called independent? Why Desmond makes himself sospecial?
Unfortunately, he is likely to be associated with the
PAP. Just like the taxi drivers, they will continue to rent
the taxis from NTUC Comfort, SMRT, and others. Even
the drivers prefer to have airbags, even they voice out,
but the ultimate decision will still be made by the
operators (and the government). This must be a well
kept secret for more than 20 years and passengers
have been subjected to such a risk without any
knowledge.
Desmond has given a lot of promises to Hougang
residents. But will he provide all information openly to
the residents? For whatever reasons, he will hide someinformation, as pointed by WP his funding for his
programs, his use of government facilities and money
as an advisor, his wet market proposal, etc.
There are many similar cases of taxi without airbags in
Signapore? If not for the recent unfortunate accident
which claimed 3 lives, passengers may still be in the
dark. Taxi is a common transport mean and is used by
many people. In fact, due to its long hours on the road,
taxi has higher risk than private cars and even public
transport.
Not necessarily big operators will install airbags. Small
operator (Prime) in fact has airbags for all its taxis:
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
27/46
>
Why small operator can do it and big ones cannot or
reluctant to do it? This is like asking town councils, whysmall TC like Hougang, Potong Pasir (under Chiam CS)
and even Aljunied-Hougang can keep the towns clean
and even reduces their maintenance charges? Why the
PAP TCs have to increase charges?
Small operators have to care about drivers safety then
they can attract drivers to rent taxi from them. Of
curse, they will also have to offer competitive rental.
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
28/46
This is how Hougang and Potong Pasir (under Chiam)
TCs survived in the past. There is a human touch and
caring for the people.
Back to taxi without airbags, Desmond will not give you
the full picture not even telling you whether there are
airbags or not. If you dont ask, that is fine Desmond
will not provide you the information. If you ask, then
Desmond will say I am only a driver, what can I do I am
only earning a living? How can I fight the big operators
and the union, can you expect them to do anything?
Hougang voters as well as voters in Singapore must
realise that without airbags are OK if there is no
accident. However, should you be given the airbags
information in advance as your rights whether you are
passengers or not? Desmond, likes the PAP
government, will not answer you if you never ask. Not
only that they will hide the truth, just like theimmigration policy, population strategy, CPF, foreign
scholarships, foreign talents, etc.
Just like the former SMRT CEO, had she disclosed
everything in the COI? Or was she asked to answer
details of the MRT breakdowns? The open inquiry has
lasted so long and people have stated to forget about
COI and the real meanings.
From taxi without airbags, town management, to
parliament, do you think Desmond as a PAP candidate
can be different from other PAP MPs. Desmond is a
unionist, why cant he care about the safety of taxi
drivers and the passengers at large? He, after all, is
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
29/46
still co-operating and assisting the taxi operators and
the government.
The most that Desmond can provide is a taxi without
airbags. You are safe and enjoy your trip if there is noaccident. If there is an accident, Desmond cannotprovide the airbags to protect you. You need to buy aninsurance to protect yourself or you can act as a co-driver to remind the driver to drive carefully. By now,you should know the co-driver and from whom to buyinsurance.

Empowering Competency: Staying with WP
despite heavy rain
This is a by-election of empowering a competent
opposition not empowering an independent Member of
Parliament. Ah Choo does not have the key to unlock
the locker of PAPs whip but Ah Huat is certainly and
competently discharging his duty as an opposition MP.
The PAP is putting up a comedy show. In the show,
with the help of main stream media, Ah Choo is
projected as an honest, young, hardworking and even
independent minded government scholar. Not only he
is a unionist taking care of low income workers and
families, he is also always in Hougang to help out the
local issues.
However, Ah Choo is all dressed up with nowhere to goas he needs the PAPs permission to go independent in
Parliament if he is elected.
Does Ah Choo have the competency and quality of an
independent MP?
Hougang voters know who has the competency.
Despite heavy rain, heavy bombardments, negativereports, they still decide to stay with the Workers
Party.
This is theme of this special series of Only U HG. The
bonding between Hougang and WP will always be there
and voters will not discard WP as witnessed in photobelow:
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
33/46
The local election strategy has failed.
The sabotage, confusion, spilt, dishonesty
and attempts to discredit Workers Party
and its candidate have failed too.
The independent man, the check on
government, the best man analogy, and thedemocracy process are not only jokes but
also insulting the voters of Hougang.
This was why Hougang voters were not leaving the rally
last night despite heavy rain. Do you think they will
leave WP this Saturday and discard their tradition in
just over a year? No wonder one independent man
predicted that WP would win by 60% of the votes.
(Page 14, Today 23 May 2012).
As a reminder, no matter what the main stream media
and the internet discussions of Hougang by-election,
the voters in this BE are Hougang citizens not the
Singapore citizens outside Hougang. The MSM, despiteputting up all the propagandas for the PAP, has failed to
realize the unique characteristic of Hougang voters
THE HOUGANG SPIRIT.
Hougang is different and special. It has voted for WP for
more than 21 years. No other constituency, except
Potong Pasir, has this experience and tradition. The
MSM is putting a bad face of WP to the wrong
-
7/29/2019 Only u HG
34/46
readers. Hougang voters have experienced all these
bad publicities for the past 21 years.
In fact, it may back fire all the recent good works and
efforts of the visits of PM, DPM, ministers, MPs and PAP
volunteers. The more sabotages, the more confusions,
and the more character attacks on WP and its
candidate in the MSM will result to more votes to the
WP. This strategy may work in other constituencies,
especially those which have not held elections for the
past 20 years. But not in Hougang, voters are used to
this election strategy and will not so easy to be brought
over.
They attend WP rallies, listen to WP arguments and
ignore the negative reports of MSM. This is how they
cast their votes.
It is always not easy to be in an opposition ward, not to
mention the opposition MPs. It is a recognized fact that
opposition candidates and politicians need to put in
more sacrifices to be in politics. Residents in the
opposition wards too have to scarify in the forms of
fewer subsidies, less priority on upgrading, less
convenience, etc.
However, losing PAP candidates have their career pathplanned for them but opposition candidates will have to
face the challenges of job, career, and business risks.
They have to put in extra efforts to keep up their spirit
against the PAP.
Hougang voters know too well about these sacrifices
and they are willing to play their parts to support this
spirit of enterprise, democracy and competency.

Teo Chee Hean to be Wong Kan Seng II?
Coming 2016 General Election, the PAP will have a keyhero for smear campaign. You have seen his action in
the past few days and how is his performance?
Since the departure of Wong Kan Seng last May, the
PAP needs to find a replacement for its big mouth
politics. It seems they have found one and
coincidently, this person is holding the same political
office in the government as the former DPM Wong.
As far as the PAP wants to engage in smear campaign,
someone from the PAP camp has to carry out this dirty
job.
Teo is testing the water?
Hougang by-election is a testing ground for Teo CheeHean and he seems to enjoy and is very happy to play
this role. For the past few days, he has become one of
the candidates for Hougang BE. It is an old practice of
the PAP or you may call it auto-pilot or smear
campaign. Years after years, elections after elections,
they continue to do it even they claim that it is a clean
election. Will it work in Hougang?

Not only they do it in the main stream media, in
addition they also focus on small prints in the Chinese

that Png is a dishonest person. May be they think
Chinese readers value honesty more than the English

he would rather Png lost the election as he was the
wrong person. Howeverhe disagreed that this was to
sabotage the WP. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A
CALCUTED MOVE AND SABOTAGE? We may need to
refer to the actual emails to avoid any translation
mistake.

What we can conclude is someone is making a
calculated move to damage the chances of Png as he
admitted in the interview.
To be open and transparent, all major newspapers and
TV stations should publish the interview in FULL so that
the readers can judge for themselves.
23 May 2012 mypaper: A misled headline to discredit
Png on purpose
There are 2 versions on this story. The headline in omy
is not misleading. However, the mypaper headline
(printed version) is a total misleading headline. The
headline said: leaked letter questioned (his) honesty,
Png Eng Huat openly apologised. SINCE WHEN HAD
PNG APOLOGYISED FOR HIS DISHONESTY? Png was
only sorry for the words used in the interview with
Channelnewsasia not the honesty issue.

The reporting in mypaper is another proof of
misreporting, selected reporting and smear campaign.
How can the MSM gain respect from their readers? Is itanother calculated move likes the informant?
The Story of Ah Q
For PAP, the way the MSM reports, the way they handle
the election issues and the way they conduct their
rallies are just the behaviour of Ah Q. By this analogy,
the next Ah Q of the PAP has already emerged. We willsee more of his action in years to come.
Just a note: Ah Q was beheaded and he did not know
the reasons.
Perhaps, the PAP has yet to learn the lessons from
GE2011 and the Hougang BE. Do they really know the
real reasons?
