What are Databases?
• Large amounts of indexed, organised and searchable data.
• Offering high levels of functionality.
• Which make it possible to save, bookmark, download, print and email data.

Databases can be collections or websites determined by:
• publishing format: E-journal collections, E-book collections, data sets, film or a combination of all formats.
• type of content: Full text material, Abstracting and indexing services, Bibliographic lists, or a combination of all.
• Subject: Science, Nursing, Business, Language, History, General.

• If a resource is accessed another way, you will NOT be recognised as being a member of TCD or ‘TCD-affiliated’ and will be denied access to the database or e-journal article

Boolean Searching
Boolean operators = certain WORDS.
They help carry out more precise keyword searches.
Most common operators:
AND : finds only Web pages that contain all of the terms
e.g. Trinity AND Dublin
OR : one search term or the other
e.g. Trinity OR Dublin (will give more results)
NOT : excludes results that have certain words
e.g. Trinity AND College NOT Dublin
Use quotation marks, e.g. “Trinity College Dublin”,
to find that exact phrase.

What are E-books?
• E-books are usually digitized versions of printed books, although some can be “born digital”
• An E-book of an important current book may not become available until the print copy has been updated to a newer edition.
