Howdy Folks

Welcome back to onetwentyfour, Volume 3.

Again, I’ve had a heap of emails and pic’s from the guys and gals from all over the place. Thank you again for all yoursupport.

As you will see in the following pages, this month has been quite a busy one, with all sorts of stuff happening, but thebest and biggest most fantasticist news is that during this month, not one, but two new websites have started up.

Firstly, Peter Thomas down in Kimberley has started up Grumpy’s Garage. A really cool site to look at some of Peter’smodels, have a laugh and even buy kits!

Check out Peter’s page at http:/grumpygarage.wordpress.com/

The other website that has sprung up is mine… I have moved Onetwentyfour into the electronic realm and eventually, the site will supercede the minimag, but for now, lets carry on as normal.

Go check it out, register and start showing off your stuff at http://onetwentyfour.africamotion.net/

Its just a little over 2 months till the NNL’s in Kimberley, so if you haven’t started building yet, I suggest you make astart. Lets get some models built and all get down there and make this years the biggest yet.

Thanks

Steve

Hi, My name is Wayne Mark Gottsch and I am an accountant at Lindsay Saker VW Bloemfontein.

I grew up in a house where my dad used to build Monogram plastic kits, as well as the Hubley metal kits. My first model I built wasa 1:24 Jaguar – it was not painted at all; that was about 1980. I then bought two Town Cars; a Monogram Duesenberg and CadillacV-16. All that remains of these two kits are the chassis, and a lot of stripped parts in a box; both bodies I gave away, when I did notknow any better! (The Duesenberg engine I plan to put into a future phantom build of a Cord) I then saved birthday money andChristmas money and bought three Monogram kits of the following vehicles, which I still have: a Black Ford Bronco, a WhiteDodge Ramcharger and a Purple Chevy Blazer. (Straight out the box builds – not even painted – left in the molded kit colour.)

When I finished High School in 1987, it was off to theARMY for two years, in Bloemfontein, where I said Iwould never return. Here I am now, married with twochildren, in Bloemfontein, since 1998.

In the interim I detailed a few of my die cast Matchboxand Hotwheels models in scale 1:64. I built a Heller 1:43Sauber C9 racer, and then in March 2010 I responded toan advert in the CAR magazine by a guy of the name of

Roy Lawson. We are very good e-mail friends now, and Iended up buying a lot of his die casts models, some

1:24/5 scale model kits, as well as the Scale Auto maga-zines, and an airbrush kit, from Roy.

Then on BOB, I bought a few more kits, and Roy startedsending me e -mail’s from Gerhard. (At that stage I waslooking for a Porsche 917, to complete my kits of a Mark2 GT40, and a P4 Ferrari.) Gerhard sent an e -mail out tohis connections, and I got a Fujimi Porsche 917, with PE

parts. I went to the SANNL last year, to check things outand also meet Peter Thomas, as well. In the meantime Ihave possibly collected more kits than what I might be

able to build ever, and that is what my wife keeps onasking me, “When will you build them all?” (Let’s notforget, where I am trying to store them all, as well!)

Gerhard and Peter have showed me that the modelling fraternity, albeit small in the RSA, is alive. Great guys. They have both given meinvaluable advice – press their buttons when you have a problem.

The 100 odd kits that I have are for me to build in the future, and I would also like to try and give my son who is now 7, the opportunity,to build model kits; in this way, doing a small part of keeping this wonderful hobby alive.

I am currently building two Mustangs for the SANNL in October this year. I like muscle cars, hot rods, rat rods, as well as the stock carsof the 60’s, and the later NASCARS of the 80’s and 90’s. I am biased toward Ford, Mercedes – Benz, Porsche and Chrysler. (During thelast few years, I have however managed to get more Chevy’s than the other 4 brands mentioned.)

Go out and build the kit in the way you would have liked it to be, and enjoy the hobby.

“Build your toys – you cannot take them with you!”

I would now just like to thank a few people, who have inspired me to build models (better known as partners in crime): -

My dad – BV Gottsch

Roy Lawson – “the rebirth & yearning”

Jeff Morrisson – those cheap semi built & unmolested kits ex BOB & purchases from you

Gerhard v Vuuren – getting me actively back in the hobby, great advice & nice kits bought from you Peter Thomas – some great advice and nice kits I bought from you

Denkit Hobbies in KZN & MDF Models in PE – some elusive and nice kits I bought from you guys

Fred Sterns c/o Freds Models on line from the USA – great priced and builders type kits from the USA

Fellow modellers from whom I have bought kits from, and sold to.

AND FINALLY LAST, BUT NOT THE LEAST

JMC Hobbies in Bfn – even though I class them as totally useless, and I have bought a few kits from them in the past, withoutthem, and fate, I am sure we would never have met Peter Barnwell, from Bethulie. Some of you guys, myself included, havemet Peter B, and bought some of his kits he sold, earlier this year.

QUICK TIP: SIMPLE TOOL FOR SMALL PARTSRENIER ROETZI have built a few Formula 1 cars and struggle with the small parts like the mirrors etc.

Crocodile clips work but something it launches them into space.

One day I needed to replace an electrical plug and whilst stripping the wires, I thought of sticking the small partsof my current F1 project into the wire casings then using the crocodile clips

I tried the idea out and ended up using a toothpick instead and it worked well for me.

I hope it is of some use to you.

Step 1

You will need the following.

Hobby knife

Wire cutters

Electric wire (size depends on the size of the part)

Toothpicks

Step 2

Strip a small peace of the casing from the electrical wire. About 10mm long.

Step 3

Cut the edges of the casing with the hobby knife for a nice edge.

QUICK TIP: SIMPLE TOOL FOR SMALL PARTSRENIER ROETZ

Step 4

Push the wire casing over one of the toothpicks ends.

Step 5

Push the plastic part into the other end of the wire casing.

And Bobs your uncle !

KIT BASHING A CHEVY 56/7 IMPALA CORVETTERENIER ROETZ

This is an on - going project I’ve had for years now and I found some new inspiration for it again.

The original idea was to combine a 56 and 57 Chevy. I liked the 56 nose and side trim but liked the 57 wings too.

So the project started by joining the bodies. The join went well, but the roof was an issue. It was breaking off atthe joints. Then I got a Chevy impala's roof from Gerhard van Vuuren. I married these three cars into this ChevyHybrid.

Now I am really kit bashing on the project .

The motor is from a Corvette C4 Revell kit. Now the problem is the motor doesnt fit the chassis. Oh well buy somesquare brass tubing to fix this problem and this is where I am with this project at the moment

So if you ever wondered what a 56 Chevy looks like with 57 rear fins, an Impala’s roof, and a Corvetteengine, there you go, question answered.
